Danish Fort

Wonderful place to see. Which is built 400 years before by Danish Government for business.

The place is not maintained at all. 5 rupees per ticket. Could have increased the ticket price atleast and used it for cleaning and stuff. The museum had nothing and with broken shelves. Could be improved.

OMG I went for a temple trip near by to kill some time I searched near by beach and found this. One of the historical place I have been to what a wonderful building still holding the structure. It has to be maintained properly lots of historical story it holds. The beach was wonderful I went on weekdays so I had some places all by myself to take a wonderful pic. Must visit place

I was really excited to visit this place. We travelled for three and a half hours and the roads were under construction.while entering through the gate you will see some pretty buildings on both sides, a church and a convent too. When we reached the actual place we were somewhat disappointed to see how poorly maintained the fort was, the entry fee was ₹5 for adults and ₹3 for children. The museum didn't have much to see and there were some parts of the fort which were getting repaired. The view of the sea fron the fort is just wonderful and it was really nice to look at. Outside, there was a statue as well which was really nice. Parking facility is there, many stalls are there and few cows here and there. It would be really nice to see of the fort was properly maintained.

A must watch place and the church nearby is a wonderful church and it gives a peaceful atmosphere

Better to go between 4 to 5pm for good climate.

Has a nice ambience as such, but the walls has been vandalised by the visitors with their writings.
Officials were there at the beach to control/ look after the crowd's welfare.

Could have been convenient if Fridays were not a holiday to visit this fort, since some tourists use Friday, Saturday and Sunday as weekend getaway. Also don't forget to carry umbrellas and water. The weather seems to be sunny and humid

Tranquebar as it is called. A Danish settlement in India. I drove to this place from Thanjavur along scenic countryside paddy farms and lotus ponds. The roads are narrow and meandering along the river kollidam.

The Danish settlement is pretty small with an arched gate entry, a church, a museum, a few pillared cottages, a cemetery, a bungalow and a fort. The beach has ruins which adds to the charm. Overall it is a piece of history which hasn't been talked about much.

We couldn't get inside the fort on account of covid protocols, may be there were good views from the top.

Wonder why isn't the Tamil Nadu Govt not promoting this place and investing into making it a better tourist experience. Throw in a few danish cafe, spruce up the museum. Lots of potential here.

Yeah it's an historic place but there is nothing much see there and same goes to museum also, u can just hang out with your fanily in the beach (best time to visit is evening)

This is a small old fort with a small museum inside it. The museum is not well maintained and so is the fort. But you can get a mesmerising view from the fort. The fort is right on the beach. There is a temple nearby which has stones infront of it. You sit there and you will not like to return from there. Definately one of the best beaches to visit.

Actually the beach near the fort was too good. The place really gives you that ancient touch. If you are a history lover then do visit. Danish fort closes before 5 or 5: 30 pm. I could not see last time because I reached there by 5: 30pm and was not allowed inside.

The fort and the beach nearby are a must see for beach lovers. The remains of an old thick wall goes inside the sea on which we can walk into the sea. I have closed my eyes and felt serene with the only sound of the sea and wind surrounding me.

10kms from Karaikal bus stand, near Porayar road junction. As you enter this town and head to the sea, you will find a peach-coloured fort standing as a mute spectator now to the centuries gone by. This beautiful fort overlooking the Bay of Bengal in Traquebar (In Tamil: Tharangambadi) was built by Danes in 1620 who made it their chief trading centre along the Indian coast. It was a result of a deal made between Danish admiral Ove Gjedde and the third ruler of Thanjavur Raghunatha Nayak.

This dilapidated fort has a charm of its own. The only sound, which can be heard here is the crashing of waves.

Entry fare for adults is Rs. 5 only

-Spend some time in the Fort's gallery viewing the porcelain wares, trade manuscripts, terracotta figurines, sculptures and armours.
-Simply sit at the deserted beach and watch the singing blue waves, which lash the sands of this almost unexplored Danish corner of India.
-Visit the New Jerusalem Church built in 1718 by a Royal Danish missionary. (500 metres away)
-See the Protestant church built by Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg. (300 metres away)
-Go to the very old Masillamani Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Could be maintained better. Considering this place's importance in history can revamp the place and make it a popular tourist spot

It's a nice hangout place for family. Extraordinary sea view from the fort. The entry fees for the fort is 20 rupees. There is a big free parking area. The museum inside the fort is not well maintained. Just take a peaceful walk on the top of the fort with the beautiful view of seashore. It will take only 15 to 20 minutes to cover the fort. Do walk on the shore with the waves. From the beach you will get a stunning view of the fort. Don't come only for this fort. If you plan to visit Thirunallar, then pay a visit to this fort. My rating is 3/5.

An unknown piece of history which will make you awe, I learned about it while I was I Puducherry and believe me it is a must visit

Nice place to visit. When you read the history of the place from the signposts, and see the place, you will feel like you are transported back in time. ASI is doing a good job in preserving and maintaining the place which was a part of our history.

Everyone can try visiting this place when you are near tharangambadi and you have more free time remaining to spend. This beach is very near to Thirukadaiyur temple.

Entrance ticket is just 5 rupees. But it's not worth to schedule for the visit and even they are not maintained nearly. You have to very careful entering into fort.

I remember, since 1964, I am visiting This Place. The Reason is that My Home is 2.4 K. M.from Danish Fort. In My School Days, Mostly, Every Day Went To Walk, From 1970 To Till 1977. That Time Sea Shore is far away from Danish Fort. But It is Very Near Now. Recently Visited On 16 - 04 - 2021, Around 15: 30hrs. I Observed More Developments. HAPPY.

Fort Dansborg looks clean and good environment located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, maintenance by the Tamilnadu government. Great architecture design with old things. Fort visiting charges just Rs: 10 per adult and Friday remain closed.

Best beach! And the fort and the town looks super great. Must visit. You can spend a hour in the fort, half hour in the beach and driving through the town takes only half hour. 2 hours is what it can't take to get to know the place. Plan accordingly.

Very nice place, very calm. The area can see the buildings which is built during Dutch period. Can spend for an hour or some more time.

It's a French fort and it has a big bungalow opposite which is the french governor's bungalow. Before 40 years the beach was 9 km from the fort after some disasters it came near the fort

Very nice ambience. Cannot see all the rooms in the fort but a must visit place. It has a museum too and top view from fort is really good

It's an wonderful Fort. It has an amazing history to it. It's under renovation for long time but if you're a history person this place will mesmerize you. Most of the values have lost but the structure remains. It's the second largest fort of Danes. It holds the agreement copy of between the King of Thanjavur at that time and the King of Denmark. The original copy is at the museum in Denmark. This place is easy to access. Has a good parking area. Family-friendly. Walkable from the bus stop. Just face the beach and spend some time in that fort. Just watching the waves.

The fort can be further maintained properly given there is more inflow of tourists in recent times. A decent place to visit during a good ride.

Well built, but need a maintenance from local people or Government for this kind of architecture and older ornaments to maintain. Kindly renovate the external view and few things like Gardening with beautiful flowers

Nice little fort at 40 kms distance from Chidambaram. The place is not highly popular with tourists so expect a calm place to travel to.

Nice place to spend some 1 hour if you are near by to this fort.but not recommended to plan for a trip for this fort alone.

Neet and clean place. Good maintanenece. Small place. Maximum an hour is enough including to cover musceum inside the fort. This is an important place in the Indian history.
You can visit this place for time killing while tour temples around Mayiladudurai after 12: 30pm while temples are closed.
No restrooms available close by. A small hotel run by TTDC available here. Better to plan lunch or dinner at Thirukkadyur or Mayiladudurau.
The fort is at beach only. But no boating allowed.
No visitors allowed inside fort on Friday. Weekly Holiday.
One who interested in history and architecture can visit this place.

A place of historical enumity where you can find how the basic soils of a coast in Sirgali was moulted to be a bigger entity of Danish rule! Must visit the Fort, along with the coasts of the Taragambadi beach and the 350 years old Zion Church! Don't expect too much of a calm climate and a tidy environment here, they still need to develop on tourist hospitality.

Fort Entrance fee is 5/- per person. Camera charge extra 30/-. Nothing much to see inside fort. Just a small musium and a view of beach from Fort. Good place to take pics

It was a good and peaceful place. There's a beach just nearby. There's also a small museum inside. Overall a good tourist place:)

Superb building plan from almost 16 century by Dutch government. You have to buy ticket which cost very less. Musem is worth. Atmosphere, location is great. Good time to visit is morning or evening.

Great view from the fort along the beach side and the place is not known to many and had a pleasant experience of new travel location added to my list
