I recently had the opportunity to visit the Gandhi Smriti Museum in Delhi, and it proved to be a truly enlightening experience. This museum, located at Birla House where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life, offers visitors a unique glimpse into the life and teachings of this iconic figure.

The museum itself is well-maintained, with clean and spacious exhibition halls. The displays are thoughtfully organized, providing a chronological narrative of Gandhi's life, from his early years to his final days. The collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents is extensive and meticulously curated, giving visitors an in-depth understanding of the man behind the legend.

One of the highlights of my visit was the room where Gandhi resided during his stay at Birla House. It has been preserved as it was during his time, allowing visitors to witness the simplicity and humility with which he lived. The personal belongings, such as his spinning wheel and spectacles, evoke a deep sense of reverence and remind us of his unwavering commitment to truth and non-violence.

The museum also boasts an impressive library, housing a vast collection of books on Gandhi's philosophy, struggles, and impact on the world. It serves as a valuable resource for scholars and researchers seeking to delve deeper into his teachings. The knowledgeable staff members are always willing to assist visitors with their queries and provide additional information.

However, I must mention that the museum can get quite crowded, especially during peak hours and weekends. This can sometimes diminish the experience, as it becomes challenging to fully immerse oneself in the exhibits. It would be beneficial if the museum could implement a system to manage crowd control and ensure a more tranquil visit for everyone.

Another aspect that could be improved is the provision of audio guides or interactive displays. While the information placards are informative, having an audio guide or interactive elements would enhance the overall engagement and understanding for visitors, especially those who are not well-versed in Gandhi's life and legacy.

Overall, Gandhi Smriti Museum in Delhi is a significant tribute to one of the world's greatest leaders. It offers a poignant and educational journey into the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. Despite the occasional crowding and the absence of audio guides, the museum's well-preserved exhibits and knowledgeable staff make it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, scholars, and anyone seeking inspiration from the life of this extraordinary individual

Gandhi Smriti, formerly known as Birla House or Birla Bhavan, is a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, situated on Tees January Road, formerly Albuquerque Road, in New Delhi, India. It is the location where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life and was assassinated on 30 January 1948. It was originally the house of the Birla family, Indian business tycoons. It is now home to the Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum, which was established in 2005.

Gandhi Smriti (former Birla House), New Delhi, India
The museum is open every day except Mondays and national holidays. Entry is free for all.

The 12-bedroom house was built in 1928 by Ghanshyamdas Birla. Sardar Patel and Mahatma Gandhi were frequent guests of the Birlas. During his final stay, Mahatma Gandhi stayed here from 9 September 1947 to 30 January 1948 when he was assassinated. Jawaharlal Nehru wrote to Ghanshyamdas Birla seeking to turn part of the Birla House in to a memorial. Ghanshyamdas was rather reluctant to give up the house with associated memories. The Birla House was purchased from KK Birla, in 1971, by the Government of India, after protracted and tough negotiations, in which, according to some reports, he even included the cost of fruit trees in the sale price. Eventually KK Birla, sold the property to the Government for Rs 5.4 million and seven acres of urban land in exchange, which was considered a very profitable deal. Birla House opened for the public on 15 August 1973, renamed the Gandhi Smriti (or Gandhi Remembrance). The museum in the building houses a number of articles associated with Gandhi's life and death. Visitors can tour the building and grounds, viewing the preserved room where Gandhi lived and the place on the grounds where he was shot while holding his nightly public walk. Gandhi was shot during his prayers at the place where Martyr's Column now stands.

The Martyr's Column now marks the place where Gandhi, the "Father of the Nation" was assassinated.

The Gandhi Smriti or Birla House is located at 5 Tees January Marg, a couple of kilometres from the Connaught Place, one of the Central Business District's of New Delhi.

Outside the house stands a pillar that contains a swastika symbol. The prominence of the pillar means that it has been used as a visual example of the way the ethical meaning of the swastika symbol has changed in the West in the 20th century. [dubious – discuss] The same pillar also contains the Sanskrit symbol for the meditation sound, Om.

Its very good place to get to know about gandhi in different dimension all together. The technology used to exhibit the principles of Gandhi is very sophisticated and is noval in its own kind.

Opted to come here instead of the National Ghandi Museum. It was a bit out of the way but totally worth a visit! The simple and peaceful setup of the museum seem to espouse Ghandi’s values in life, and I enjoyed reading about the many stories and meaningful quotes of this great man.

As this was the house where Ghandi was assassinated, you can also read and follow his daily routine on that fateful day right up until the bullet bites.

This memorial of Gandhi is very well made and free of charge. All the information is well put together and interesting. One learns a lot about the whole life of Gandhi, not just about the years that made him famous and unforgettable.
Basic sanitary installations are present, as well as a small gift shop, which seems to be their only means of income besides (probable) governmental aid.

A walkthrough this place will bring emotions flowing, if one has positive feelings for the great Mahatma Gandhi. The place where Mahatma lived last few days of his life after the independence, the place he was sadly assassinated, and quotes about him, a khadi souvenir shop all are memorable.

This is a review of the Birla House lent to Gandhi where he met his end.
Nicely done, peaceful place with a good historical survey, plus some of his very few possessions.
Each of the last steps he took toward the temple is recorded in a raised pathway leading to spot he was shot.
Impressive painted story of his life is inside the temple space at the back of the lawn.

Follow in Gandhi's last footsteps and find out more about the man and his legacy in this incredible piece of history.

We went to a few museums and places that provided an insight into Gandhi but this was the definitive one. It's so clean and well-kept. It can be overwhelming walking around here but it's a memory you will take with you forever.
13 नवंबर 2018 3:44
It's very silent place, you can visit here if you have interest in history. Some memorable things of Gandhi's are here, there is no entry ticket for this. Is good place to spend some quality time.

An excellent place to visit.
Complete security on or around national holidays.

This is the place where Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi better known as Gandhiji, left before being martyred on 30th January.

The only issue is finding parking is a little difficult. You may have to park right behind the premises and take a very long walk and enter/exit form the front.

Otherwise, this place is just lovely!

Many of us wouldnot know Mahatma Handhi was assasinated in Delhi.

Gandhi smriti is his memorial at Tees January Marg. It is where Gandhi ji spent the last 144 days of his life & was assasinatedby Nathu Ram Godse.

There is his memorial, a museum and a khadi gralmudyog shop inside that sells merchandise and clothes. The clothes are expensive, yet reasonably priced but you pay 10-12% GST on it. (I am uploading a photo of the Kurta I bought from the Khaadi store).

All in all, you should visit the place.
