This stunning mosque is located in Old Delhi. Considered to be one of the largest and most important mosques of India, it is almost entirely made of red sandstone and white marble. It is truly an architectural marvel.

This is an amazing Mosque not just because is the biggest in India but also because of the architechtural style and red colours with which it was built. Mesmerising beauty. No words can justify its existence. However, it's not an accessible structure.

A wonderful mosque made by Shajahan. There is no passage ticket. You can climb to the highest point of one of the Masjid's pinnacles for 50 rupees. You can get an elevated perspective of the spot. The pinnacle closed at 5.30 p.m. The tourists are unable to enter the love region.

There are a number of non veg food shops and taste is good

We visited the beautiful Jama Masjid, which is the largest mosque in India. It is located in the heart of Old Delhi and represents the reveals the splendor of the Mughal dynasty?
We were impressed by this beautiful red sandstone and white marble monument with its two 40 meter high minarets and bulbous domes.
From the esplanade, we saw a large courtyard with basins where the faithfuls do their ablution before praying
To visit the mosque, we had to take off shoes, cover our arms/legs and respect the silence.
A sumptuous and dazzling mosque

Such a lovely place, no matter what hour you choose its equally wonderful. Its a feeling, not just a place.
27 सितंबर 2022 9:22
It was built by Mughal emperor Shahjahan between 1644 and 1656 at a cost of 1 milion rupees and inaugurated by an imam from Bukhara. The courtyard can accommodate more than 25,000 person's.
It is obviously a very nice mosque and is very active. I went in the afternoon and since you have to take your shoes off, I was hopping around like a flea. The floor gets to be like a griddle. I highly recommend you wear shoes with socks. You can then keep your socks on when you walk around. It is an incredible structure and should be seen if you have the time.

(08/2022) Nice mosque in the wild part of Old Delhi. Entry for foreigners ₹300 (locals free), tower entry for foreigners ₹100 (locals ₹50). At the top of the tower entrance, you have to leave your shoes by the guy for extra ₹10 (there is an option to leave the shoes at the entrance to the mosque, but we don't know the fee). The viewpoint itself is good but cramped, the view is obstructed by a fence and the stairs to the tower are extremely narrow (it is simply a minaret). There was an effort to regulate the number of people at the tower, but it was still almost impossible to move there.
We didn't enjoy the visit of the mosque too much, because we were the only white tourists here and the persistent crowd wanted selfies with us all the time, we literally had to run away!
16 सितंबर 2022 19:51
Western tourists are not welcome to this place. People at the entrance are rude, charge 300 rupees even though the.gov website says it's free (fee of 300 to take pictures only). Plus 100 rupees to cover your legs if you are in shorts. The inside of the mosque is not accessible for non-Muslims anyway. So you would better enjoy it from the outside.

Apart from not maintaining heavy rush and water all around the main gate. It was one of the biggest Masjid in India built by Emperor Shajahan. Must visit place

It was Shah Jahan who built the Jama Masjid in the walled city of Shahjahanabad (or Old Delhi as it is known today), which was the capital of the Mughal Empire during his reign. The construction of the mosque began in 1644 and went on for long twelve years before it was completed in 1656. More than 5000 workers were engaged in the construction work, supervised by Saadullah Khan, the prime minister of the Emperor. Shah Jahan spared no expenses to build this grand monument and it was built at a cost of one million rupees.to the top.

The mosque has a strikingly designed black and white marble floor with 899 bordered spaces demarcated for worshippers. Lavish arches, floral designs, and fluorescent motifs adorn the interiors of this mosque. The archway to the center of the prayer hall has the words ‘The Guide’ written on it. The significant relics at the mosque include a copy of the Quran written on deerskin, a red hair from the beard of Prophet Mohammed, a pair of his footwear, and his footprints on a marble block.

Delhi Jama Masjid: Today
Today, this centuries-old mosque is one of the top tourist places in Delhi. Counted among the largest mosques in the country, it draws travelers and devotees from all corners of India and beyond. The mosque witnesses a huge congregation of worshippers during Id when people gather here to offer prayers or namaz. Though there are two minarets inside the mosque, only the one at the southern end is open to the public at a nominal fee. During the e

The grandeur. The history. The architecture. Says it all about the place. A part of Indian heritage. A part of Indian history. If one has to visit Delhi, one has to be visiting Jama Masjid for sure.

One one side you’d find a huge array of food and Mughal dishes which are a specialty of Delhi. On the other hand you’d find the gateway to the Meena Bazar where you can shop for items.

The Masjid e Jahan Numa  (lit.  the 'World-reflecting Mosque'), commonly known as the Jama Masjid of Delhi, is one of the largest mosques in India. [1] It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 and 1656 at a cost of one million rupees, and was inaugurated by Imam Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari from Bukhara, present-day Uzbekistan. The mosque was completed in 1656 AD with three great gates and two 40 metres high minarets constructed with strips of red sandstone and white marble. The courtyard can accommodate more than 2500 people. There are three domes on the terrace which are surrounded by the two minarets. On the floor, a total of 899 black borders are marked for worshippers. The architectural plan of Badshahi Masjid, built by Shah Jahan's son Aurangzeb at Lahore, Pakistan, is similar to the Jama Masjid. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built the Jama Masjid between 1650 and 1656. It was constructed by more than 5000 workers. It was originally called Masjid e Jahan Numa, meaning 'mosque commanding the view of the world'. The construction was done under the supervision of Saadullah Khan, wazir (or prime minister) during Shah Jahan's reign. The cost of the construction at the time was one million Rupees. Shah Jahan also built the Taj Mahal, at Agra and the Red Fort in Old Delhi, which stands opposite the Jama Masjid. The Jama Masjid was completed in 1656 AD (1066 AH). The mosque was inaugurated by Imam Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari, from Bukhara, Uzbekistan, on 23 July 1656, on the invitation from Shah Jahan. [2] About 25,000 people can pray in the courtyard at a time. The mosque is commonly called "Jama" which means Friday. After the British victory in the Revolt of 1857, they confiscated the mosque and stationed their soldiers there. They also wanted to destroy the mosque as an act of punishment to the city. But due to opposition faced, the demolition was not done. The iconic mosque is one of the last monuments built under Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. After the construction of the monument in 1656, it remained the royal mosque of the emperors until the end of the Mughal period. During 1948, the last Nizam of Hyderabad,  Asaf Jah VII was asked for a donation of ₹75,000 to repair one-fourth of the mosque floor. The Nizam instead sanctioned ₹3 lakh, stating that the remaining three-fourths of the mosque should not look old. The mosque and Red Fort were planned to be a larger planned city named Shahjahanbad. The mosque is considered as the best among all mosques built during the Mughal Empire as it has the best mixture of marble and limestone. The mosque has three great gates, four towers and two 40-metre tall minarets constructed of strips of red sandstone and smooth white marble. The northern gate has 39 steps and the southern side has 33 steps. The eastern gate was the royal entrance and has 35 steps. Out of all these gateways, the eastern one, which was used by the emperors, remains closed during weekdays. The mosque is built on a red sandstone porch, which is about 30 feet (9.1 m) from ground level and spreads over 1200 square metres. The dome is flanked by two lofty minarets which are 130 feet (40 m) high and consists of 130 steps, longitudinally striped with marble and red sandstone.  The minarets consist of five storeys, each with a protruding balcony. The adjoining edifices are filled with calligraphy. The first three storeys of the minarets are made of red sandstone, the fourth of marble and the fifth of sandstone. The courtyard can accommodate 25,000 worshippers and occupies 408 square feet. The mosque is about 261 feet (80 m) long and 90 feet (27 m) wide. The prayer hall measures 61 metres in length and 27.5 metres in breadth.  It is made up of high cusped arches and marble domes. The cabinet located in the north gate has a collection of relics of Muhammad – the Quran written on deerskin, a red beard-hair of the prophet, his sandals and his footprints embedded in a marble block.

This is a great place to visit whilst on tour in Delhi. Which we did with a tour guide who is able to tell you about its historic origins. That come from the Persian mogul kings (Shah's) who built the mosque and the Red Ford as part of the original Delhi, now known as Old Delhi.
We were also able to take a rickshaw ride through the narrow streets of Old Delhi from very nearby.
Very highly recommended

A beautiful pocket of calm at the heart of Old Delhi's mayhem, the capital's largest mosque is built on a 10m elevation. It can hold a mind-blowing 25,000 people. The marble and red-sandstone structure, known also as the ‘Friday Mosque’, was Shah Jahan’s final architectural triumph, built between 1644 and 1658.

The Jama Masjid is often called the largest mosque in India. Though not as well known. It is a monument that stands tall on the edge of numerous busy streets. Like typical Mughal buildings, this is also made of red stone and white marble. And has all the nuances of Mughal architecture. The huge gateways, the minarets, delicate and intricate jaalis, a water body, corridors running around the building and big courtyards. If you climb the minaret, what you get to see is probably the best view of Delhi. It is interesting to stand at the narrow top of the minaret and identify the landmark buildings around it. Since most of the area around Jama Masjid is not high rise, you would enjoy the view.
