Old Delhi Food Walk

An unforgettable, beautiful and at the same time sad experience for us.

We were led through the streets of Old Delhi by Salman and Furkan, our guides. We experienced the places not just from our tourist perspective, but very personally and authentically. We sampled the street food stalls; there was jalebi, pao bhaji, paranthas and much more. We took a tour of what is probably the largest spice market in the world, where our noses started to itch slightly from the smell of chili in the air.

Finally, we visited a contact point of the Salaam Baalak Trust NPO, where the children are taken in during the day and receive food, lessons and entertainment. The goal is to get them off the streets and offer them a future.

The life stories of Furkan and Salman, who both lived on the streets for years, will remain in our memories for a long time.

Thank you very much for your honesty!

Old Delhi Walk with Rohit - the HIGHLIGHT of our visit in Delhi!:)

Our walk with Rohit in Old Delhi was the highlight of our visit in Delhi. I highly recommend this amazing experience to any visitors wanting to discover the authentic culture of Old Delhi and explore off the beaten path. If there is one thing you do in Delhi, please do this and support this incredible charity!
We weren’t actually so keen in doing a tour in the first place, as we tend to like to explore by ourselves. But the Salaam Baalak Trust was highly recommended to us by Delhi locals while we were travelling in Ladakh, not only as a great alternative tour but also a way to support street children in India. So we decided to give it a try.
It was indeed 200% worth it and we were so glad to have done this as we would have never seen any of the places or gained any real understanding of real life in Old Delhi without it. This isn’t a tour of the usual touristy site, but an incredible insider’s walk with ex street children who have made a life for themselves through the Salaam charity. As such you get genuine and honest views on life in Old Delhi, and a real insight of the hidden gems, the culture and stories of Old Delhi. Walking through the narrow alleys, we explored Hindu, muslins and jains small temples and mosques, we met with traders in small workshops, from print workers to clothe makers and spice sellers.
We only booked the day before we arrived and were lucky to have Rohit as our tour guide. He used to be a street kid too. He was totally outstanding not only as a guide but also as a person, a very inspirational, kind and gentle human-being, with an inspirational story and a wealth of knowledge about Old Delhi. He was full of storie, s from the different religions and culture to the hard working life of locals.
Rohit was also very flexible: he kindly came to pick us up at the metro station at a time that was convenient to us, customised the walk according to our interest, made sure we were safe at all times, and at the end, he even booked us a Uber tuktuk to get to our next destination.
We also visited the school where treet children go and where Rohit himself spent his childhood. It was very emotional to meet those children, hear their stories, and also hear Rohit’s incredible story and how despite a challenging childhood, he managed to find hope in the institution and with great courage took this amazing opportunity to create a better life for himself.
Thank you Rohit for a wonderful and very inspirational walk, and thanks to the Salaam Baalak Trust for their amazing work.

Incredible tour. Junaid our guide was a former street kid and provides an authentic look into the difficulties the children face. The best thing I did in Delhi. Not to be missed. It’s also helping a great cause!

We did the “Old Delhi Food Walk” with the Salaam Baalak Trust and had a great experience. Our guide, Junaid, who himself was a former street child, provided us with insights into life in Old Delhi from a perspective that we otherwise would not have been able to experience. In addition to exploring the streets of Old Delhi and tasting typical food, the tour also managed to mix in a social component through a visit of the NGO’s contact point. The initial contact with the NGO was also very positive, as they made a great effort to facilitate a tour on the day we wished, even though it was on short notice. All in all a great experience!

The Salam Balak Trust Walk in Delhi is a must-do for anyone visiting the city. The walk is led by a guide from the trust, who is a former street child and offers an insightful and personal perspective on the lives of street children in Delhi. The walk takes you through some of the city's bustling streets, giving you a glimpse into the daily struggles and resilience of these children. The guide was knowledgeable, passionate, and made the tour both informative and engaging. The walk ended with a visit to the trust's shelter home, where we got to interact with the children and learn more about the organization's work. Overall, the experience was eye-opening and heartwarming, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the issue of street children in India.

Asif was great but the tour overall was ok. The first half was the best, walking the streets and learning about kids that runaway from home or live on the streets. The second half was learning about the organization and the work they do helping children. It ends with the (impactful) personal story of the guide and finally an opportunity to make a donation (minimum 400). Each donation requires handwritten paperwork/receipts which takes time. No passport/boarding pass information was requested even though the email stated having it available.

I simply thought a little too much time was spent in the organization headquarters watching kids do homework, hearing about individual success stories and doing payment paperwork at the end.
