An institute of national importance, one can find students from all around the country and experience the diversity India has to offer. The vibe and the enthusiasm of the students on any field whether it be work or play can be seen everyday.

One among the best colleges for Architecture and Planning in India at par with IIT's and NIT's. It is the oldest among the three SPA's in the country. It is also one among the few prestigious institutes to have received the tag of Institute of National Importance. Due to it's location being in prime location of delhi at the ITO, the college is unable to expand. The Infrastructure in designed to cater an old strend of student intake. It has already crossed its limit and is now unable to expand due to limited land available there. Also the hostel for boys is 10km away from the college.
However, it's hoped that once the proposed new campus in the land allocated to the college outside delhi gets constructed, things would get better. But, unfortunately the proposal did not get carried forward since more than 10 years. Despite all this, the college provides good quality education to its students.

They are the Number 1 in Architectural studies for PG and Master's in the Nation.
Children get admission after a very high performance in the competitive exams.

An education institute of this stature which churns out the best of best architects in the world should focus and develop their own Infrastructure.

They must provide inhouse hostel facilities for boys and girls separately with strict governance with qualified staff.

Today children travel 10kms away from college for their hostels and there is no commute facility for the college.

The Government of India and the SPA alumni can make a huge impact by getting some focus on this wonderful institution

The best and the oldest college for architecture and planning in India. Arundhati Roy is an alumni. Other eminent personalities include Raj Rewal, Revathy Kamth, Eugene Pandala. The Library houses over 63,926 books based on various subjects of learning. It is an autonomous institution under MHRD.

Claim to be one of the best institution for architecture and planning. Campus is small without proper ground for playing. Hostel is 10 km far from college. Come here learn things by yourself.

A renowned institute with a very very poor infrastructure. The teachers & students are awesome. Rest every thing is hopeless. Previously fees were very less. But now, they are charging it more than private colleges. I would recommend to stay away from this institute. For last couple of years, their web site too is sleeping. No body really seems to be bothered. Downfall is eminent!

This place has pretty bad infrastructure. Number of rooms in hostel is only 40 Percent of the required quantity. Hence students are forced to either share a room with two other people that was meant for 1 or look for PGs. Most of the teachers (except a few) illogically stuff the students with tons of assignments and don't do much about teaching from their side. Hence the quality of education is decreasing and so is the quality of students. There is less creativity among students as they are forced to work hard rather than use their brain. Students here often go into depression as there is a culture of making students repeat entire year for failing in jury. And some teachers enjoy flunking their students more than teaching them. God save students of this college.

With a legacy of 75 years, the School of Planning and Architecture Delhi is a nucleus of young designers thriving for knowledge and innovation. The culture is good. Things get rough when the workload is massive. Therefore, Time management is a great skill to have for survival in the Institute.

It's a nice college with full of freedom and it's one of the best institutes in India for architecture and planning. Beside this, you can get a degree in Design as well from this college.

Utopia is the annual cultural and technical festival here and one must go there, it's for three days and that is literally awesome.

This place is hell on earth. If you wish to maintain your sanity do NOT study here. It's a college of planning and architecture but the infrastructure of the college is a joke. The girls' hostel is in front of a Red Light Area and they live in the room like sardines in a can. Do not, I repeat DO NOT study in Spa Delhi if you value your physical and mental health. Probably the food is the only thing that was good.

School of Planning and Architecture

The Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs) are a group of autonomous publicinstitutes of higher education under Ministry of Human Resource Development,  Government of India. The SPAs lists three institutes located at Bhopal,  New Delhi and Vijayawada. They were established with the objectives of providing quality Architecture and physical planning education. The SPAs primarily offer undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programmes.

Each SPA is autonomous and exercises independent control over its day-to-day operations. However, the administration of all SPAs and the overall strategy of SPAs is overseen by the SPA council. The SPA Council is headed by India's Minister of Human Resource Development and consists of the chairpersons and directors of all SPAs and senior officials from the MHRD.

History

The history of the SPA system dates back to 1946 when Sir Jogendra Singh of the Viceroy's Executive Council set up a committee whose task was to consider the creation of Higher Technical Institutions for post-war industrial development in India. The 22-member committee, headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, recommended the establishment of these institutions in various parts of India, along the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and consulting from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign with affiliated secondary institutions.

The first School of Planning and Architecture was founded in 1941 as a Department of Architecture of Delhi College of Engineering now the Delhi Technological University. It was later affiliated to the University of Delhi and integrated with the School of Town and Country Planning which was established in 1955 by the Government of India to provide facilities for rural, urban and regional planning. On integration, the School was renamed as School of Planning and Architecture in 1959. Recognizing its national and international eminence, the Government of India conferred the status of the ‘Deemed University’ on the School in 1979. This entitled the SPA, New Delhi to broaden and deepen its academic horizons by introducing new academic programmes, and by promoting critical research activities.

On the request of Ministry of Human Resource Development,  Government of Indiaa project report was prepared by Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI) for establishing four new Schools of Planning & Architecture in the country. Based on this report the Government took a decision to establish two SPAs, one in Bhopal.

The School of Planning and Architecture had a modest beginning in 1941 as a Department of Architecture of Delhi Polytechnic. It was later affiliated to the University of Delhi and integrated with the School of Town and Country Planning which was established in 1955 by the Government of India to provide facilities for rural, urban and regional planning. On integration, the School was renamed as School of Planning and Architecture in 1959.

Recognizing the specialized nature of the fields in which the School had attained eminence, in 1979, the Government of India, through the then Ministry of Education and Culture, conferred on the School of Planning and Architecture the status of "Deemed to be a University". With this new status, the School had broadened its horizon by introducing new academic and extension programmes and promoting research and consultancy activities. It was recognized as "An Institute of National Importance under an Act of Parliament" in 2015.

The School is a specialized University, only one of its kinds, which exclusively provides training at various levels, in different aspects of human habitat and environment. The School has taken lead in introducing academic programmes in specialized fields both at Bachelor's and Master's level, some of which are even today not available elsewhere in India. The School, in striving for excellence, has always been in the lead in extending education and research to new frontiers of knowledge. Human habitat and environment being the basic concern of the School, the spectrum of academic programmes is being continuously extended by providing programmes in new fields and emerging areas for which facilities are not available, as yet, anywhere else in the country.

The current SPA Delhi campus is located near ITO in Indraprastha Estate in New Delhi. The SPA Residential Campus and Hostel is located at Maharani Bagh, New Friends Colony, New Delhi and a girls hostel at Indraprastha Estate. A site of 20 acres has been acquired south of JNU by the school adjacent to Hotel Grand for developing a new campus.
