As compared to my last visit many years ago, the place is now well covered and maintained. The public access to the kund area is now prevented with wooden restrictions. However, i could not see any signage regarding official guide charges for authorised tourist guides. Tickets can be issued online at the gates by scanning the QR code if there is a long queue by chance for the tickets.

This is a very less known site but is a must visit. Modhera is a small village in the Mehsana district of Gujrat. Modhera means "village built on dead bodies" as there are human remains in the entire area if you dig the ground. The sun temple here is a marvelous piece of architecture. Built more than 900 years ago by the local artisans. The task of building the temple was given to the villagers by the king as there was a drought in the area and the villagers didn't want free help from the king. So they built this temple and were paid by the king in form of food. This is the only sun temple that is not on a chariot but on a lotus flower as its base. The carvings and design is all as per Vastu Shastra and is very intricate. The temple comprises of 3 parts, a step well in the east, followed by an auditorium and then the main temple of Lord Suryanarayan. The temple was attacked and looted thrice by Muslim invaders and was damaged badly. The invaders even took away the statue of the God. Marks of invasion and destruction are still visible in the temple structure. The stepwell is serene with 108 small temples built around it and is 80 ft deep. The under construction Ram Mandir at Ayodhya is being built on the design of this Sun temple. It's a must visit place.

A rare sun temple, second only to the one in Konark. It dates back to the 11th century, and being in Ahmedabad, with its history of invasion, it's not very well preserved, but still quite good.

The temple has three parts, an inner sanctum, and outer perimeter and a step well (quite impressive by itself). Intricately carvings can be seen on the pillars and temple walls

Sprawling grounds are maintained by the government and in decent condition

Around two hours from Ahmedabad, you can make a full day trip by combining with Raani Ki Vaaw and Patan town (of Patola fame)

Poetry in stone. The temple, the carvings, and maintenance is all excellent.
I regret to inform that the lights placed inside the temple and around it spoils the beauty of the place.
I would suggest that some focus lights be put up instead.

The Sun temple of Modhera, which ranks next only to the Sun temple of Konark is one of the finest example of temple architecture in Gujarat. Built in 11th century A. D, this temple is located in Bechraji taluka of Mehsana District, on the left bank of river Pushpavati, a tributary of river Rupen situated at a distance of 30 kms from Patan city.

It is built on a platfrom (jagati) facing east, in the reign of Solanki ruler Bhimadeva- I (1022-1063 A. D.). This place finds mention in Skanda Purana as Bhaskar region. The temple complex is an assimilation of three separate elements L.e. Sanctum (garbh-griha) with an ambulatory (pradakshina-path), a main hall (Gudha-mandapa and detached assembly hall (Sabha-mandapa or Nritya- mandapa) with a gateway (torana). In front of the torana is a large rectangular tank, of 175 X 120 feet decorated with numerous miniature shrines, which is locally known as Ramakunda. It is situated to the east of the sadha-mandapa. This is approached through a grand flight of steps from all four sides. The tank has about 108 small temples which contain the relief of various deities like Ganesha, Sheshashayi Vishnu, Nataraja and Sitala Mata.

The Sanctum has an arrangement of elegantly decorated tall pillars with ornamental torana arch. The outer walls of the sanctum are relieved by niches containing the images of twelve Adityas, panels of Ashta-dikpalas, different forms of Gauri, dancing Apsaras, musicians etc.

The pillared octagonal assembly hall has entrance arches, exquisitely carved with sculptures on the upper portion of the pillar from all four sides, while the outer walls are exquisitely carved with the images of various froms of gods, the inner walls are decorated with sculptures and scenes depicted from Ramayana and Mahabharata. The top (shikhara) of the assembly hall exists partially with miniature shikhara.

After the assembly hall is the main hall and the sanctum, where twelve images of Sun God are depicted. There is a division (antrala) between the main hall and the sanctum. The temple is devoid of the sculpture of the main deity i.e. The Sun God. It is engraved with sculptures of Brahma, Sheshashayi-Vishnu, Vishnu in various incarnation like Varaha (boar incarnation), Tri-vikrama (dwarf incarnation), Nar- simha (man-lion incarnation) etc, some of the sculptures representing Saiva cult are Uma-Mahesvara, dancing Ganesha and image of goddess Durga, Saptamatrika etc. The outer walls of the complex are relieved by the images of various gods and goddeses, panels of astadikpalas placed on cardinal directions, dancing Apsaras, musicians and amorous figures.

Sun Temple at Modhera is one of the few shrines that are dedicated to the 'Surya' (Sun God) and is situated on the bank of River Pushpavati at Modhera village of Mehsana district in Gujrat, India.

It was built by King Bhimdev of the 'Solanki' dynasty (Considered to be Suryavanshis, or descendants of ‘Sun god’) in 1026. The temple complex is built in Maru-Gurjara style (Chaulukya style).
The Temple was plundered by Mahmud Ghazni but still the architectural grandeur is not vanished.

As the temple was dedicated to the solar deity 'Surya' (Sun God) traditionally depicted in reliefs riding a chariot harnessed by horses, often seven in number which represents the seven colours of visible light, and seven days in a week. The Vedic scriptures of the Hindu religion refer to the sun as the source of energy, vitality, and life which controls the course of our life.

The whole temple is pillared on a lotus-shaped structure and every inch of its walls showcase edgy, detailed carvings. And those carvings represent every bit of Hindu culture, from Ramayana to Mahabharata and from the human lifecycle to Kamasutra.
With its complex carvings and the splendid rectangular step-well (covering 21000 sq.feet area), Surya Kund, the structure is beyond grand.

The temple complex consists of three distinct components,
'Gudhamandapa', 'Sabhamandapa' and the 'Surya Kunda'.

Entrance passage to Gudhamandapa is decorated with beautifully carved pillars and arches. Once, this hall used to bear the idol of the 'Sun God' before being plundered by Mahmud Ghazni. But the twelve different facets of the 'Surya' (depicting the 12 months in a year) are still visible on its walls.

The Sabhamandapa (used to be the place for religious gatherings and conferences) is an architectural parallelogram in form, giving an impression of a star-like structure, with Firty Two intricately carved pillars (depicting the 52 weeks in a year) and various centrally positioned reliefs of 'Surya'.

The Surya Kunda, also known as 'Ram Kunda' is a deep step-well consisting of four terraces and recessed geometric steps that was used as a reservoir, which may have originally been fed by an underground spring.

There are around 108 miniature shrines and niches, depicting sculptures of many Vaishnavite deities and goddesses such as 'Shitala' on its stairs, making the step-well remarkably attractive.

The exclusively carved temple complex and the magnificently sculpted kund are jewels in the art of masonry of the Solanki period. This temple is an architectural achievement maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

A gem of ancient India history, the Modhera Sun Temple is a brilliant heritage sight. It is a must visit if you ever come in the vicinity of Modhera/Becharaji. Do prefer weekdays if planning to visit to see no crowd. It is well-managed by the Archaeological Department of India. Found it outstanding in terms of hygiene. Snacks and foods are also available outside the temple area. All-in-all, this place makes a perfect option for a knowledge-acquiring picnic!

The Modhera Sun Temple was made by King Bhima I of the Chalukya dynasty in the early 11th century.
It is a temple made to honour the Sun God in Modhera village of Mehsana district on the bank of River Pushpavati. The temple complex is divided into three parts – Gudha Mandapa  (the shrine hall),  Sabha Mandapa  (the assembly hall) and Kunda  (the reservoir).

The temple is designed in such a way that during every equinox, the first ray of the rising sun would fall on a diamond placed on the head of the Sun God. This would also light up the shrine with a golden glow.

The Sabha Mandap stands on 52 pillars, signifying the 52 weeks in a year. There are carvings of the sun on the walls to show its unity with air, water, earth and space.

ABOUT MODHERA SUN TEMPLE

Here we are at the Sun Temple Modhera that was built in 1026 CE by King Bhimdev – a Solanki King who ruled from Patan.

Solankis are a Suryavanshi dynasty, descendants of Sun and hence a temple dedicated to Sun.

This temple is a contemporary of Chola temples in South and Chandela temples in the North.

The Modhera Sun temple is built using the locking system that is said to be an earthquake resistant method.

As in the case of an earthquake; the structure would shake but not fall.

It also sits on the tropic of cancer that passes through India.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE MODHERA SUN TEMPLE

The Sabhamandapa is a diagonally arranged octagonal hall that welcomes you with its exquisite toran.

Its best feature is it’s magnificently carved pillars carrying Torana arches in alternate triangular and semi-circular designs

Literature tells me there are 52 pillars denoting the 52 weeks of a solar year.

The water tank or Surya Kund at Modhera’s Sun temple is a stepwell on the eastern edge of Sun temple complex facing the Sabha Mandapa.

It has pyramid shaped steps forming some intriguing geometric patterns on the steps.

However what makes this tank distinct from other similar temple tanks, is the presence of big and small temples on its steps.

Not less than 108 shrines mark the steps of this tank including the shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Sheetala Mata and many others.

Other temples are in various states of ruins, but they all look beautiful even now.

Just standing there that day amongst such rich history and civilization, I felt incredibly humbled and awestruck about this wonderful culture of ours, which despite the loot and destruction by foreign invaders is standing tall and how there is so much to learn about this land called Incredible India.

The Sun temple is so designed that on the days of equinoxes i.e. 21st March and 21st September, the first rays of sun fall on the idol of Sun in Garbhagriha.

Guda mandapa is embellished with niche images of twelve Aditya’s – showing different aspects of the Sun – probably representing each Solar month.

It is said that the main idol was made of pure gold and depicted the sun sitting on his chariot with 7 horses with his Sarathi Arun driving the chariot.

The idol sat on a deep plinth that was again filled with gold coins.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE MODHERA SUN TEMPLE

Today, all you can see is the deep pit in Garbhagriha that tells the tale of plundering.

It is said that the diamonds on the idol could light the whole temple.

Based on an inscription found in the Modhera Sun Temple, it has been dated to 1026.

This sun temple, too, fell into ruins after its sacking by Ala-ud-din Khilji.

Currently, it is under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India who have done a fantastic job of renovation and restoring this majestic structure.

In 2014, this Sun Temple was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

It is believed that the construction of the temple was commissioned to the Silavat stonemasons who were known for their skill in making the hardest stone take on the quality of delicate wood carvings.

The unique engineering feat involved in building the temple did not use cement, lime or metal to join the stones. Each stone slab has been interlocked with the adjoining ones in appropriate grooves and sealed with seasoned wood.

So if you're planning to visit Gujarat, make sure to stop here and appreciate the beauty that is Modhera Sun Temple.

The shrine proper of the Sun Temple was built during the reign of Bhima I of Chaulukya dynasty. [A][1][2][3][4] Earlier, during 1024-25,  Mahmud of Ghazni had invaded Bhima's kingdom, and a force of around 20,000 soldiers had unsuccessfully tried to check his advance at Modhera. Historian A. K. Majumdar theorizes that the Sun Temple might have been built to commemorate this defense. [5] On a block in western wall of cella, there is an inscription "Vikram Samvat 1083" upside down carelessly incised in Devnagari script which correspond to 1026-1027 CE. No other date is found. As the inscription is upside down, it evidences the destruction and reconstruction of the cella. Due to the position of the inscription, it is not firmly considered as the date of construction. On the stylistic ground, it is known that the Kunda with its corner shrines was built earlier at the beginning of the 11th century. The inscription is rather considered as the date of destruction by Ghazni instead of the construction. Soon after Bhima had returned to the power. So the temple proper, the miniature and the niche shrines in the tank were built shortly after 1026 CE. The dancing hall was added much later in the third quarter of the 12th century along with the gateways, the porch of the temple proper and the doorframes of the temple and the cella during the reign of the Karna. [6]

The temple is built on 23.6° latitude (approximately near Tropic of Cancer). [B][8][9][10][11] The place was later known as Sita ni Chauri and Ramkund locally. [C][12] No worship is offered here now. [3] The temple is the Monument of National Importance and is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India.

This is an ancient temple dedicated to Surya Dev or Sun-God. One of the very few Sun temples. There is a large pond infront of it which is also an architectural marvel. The dome of the temple is damaged long back so it is reconstructed by ASI but not with much success thats why it looks very ODD. However carvings on pillars and walls of the structure are beautiful.

In one word 'excellent'. It is a very beautiful 11th century temple with a nice architecture. It is around 2 hours drive from Ahmedabad. There was some traffic on the high way so it took little more time for us then thought of. The pond in front is so nice and very photogenic. There is no worshipping of idol in this temple and is only a historical monument now. There are vegitarean restaurants few kilometers away from the temple. Do remember to visit Rani ki Vav which is situated around 30 km away from here, which is another architecture marvel.

It's The only Sun Temple in the world.
Really wonderful place for visit with friends and family.
I didn't like one thing is entry fees, for Indian just 25INR But for foreigners 12times more which is 300INR (around 5$). It should be same for Foreigners too or should be free for them as they spending money to trav to our country to see our culture and art of "Real BHARAT"

Built a 1000 years ago, a temple and a step well, on the bank of pushpavati. Well maintained and beautiful structure. People go to Europe and America for a vacation, show me a monument, which is half as good as any of these temples or even relics in India. I don’t think there are any.

Beautiful architecture. The complex is very well maintained. But the approach needs more signs. And there aren't enough decent places around if you want to eat something.

As per ASI, it is an 11th century monument got built by Solanki King Bhimdev-I. The monument mainly has 3 parts e.g. Garbhgruh, Assembly Hall or Dancing Floor and Goorh mandap. Parikrama path is around Garbhgruh. Besides, there is one rectangular tank admeasuring 175x120 feet and sorrounded by 108 temples/deities of various Gods.

The place is about 90 kms.from Ahmadabad and 30 kms.from Patan in Becharji taluka of Mehsana district, on the banks of river Pushpwati. Nearest airport is Ahmadabad. This region was known as Bhaskar region in Skandh Purana. Bhashkar means Sun in Sanskrit.

The top of the monuments have fallen and are visible around as remains. ASI should start its restoration work. State govt.should develop this place further.

A piece of architectural brilliants of ancient india. The temple is looking beautiful even after 1000 year. A must visit place when your in Gujarat. It is situated on the bank of river Pushpavati. The tank in front of the temple was beautiful.

The surya mandir is built on Tropic of Cancer and pays a tribute to the Gods, Goddesses, nature, seasons, months, days and hours. The temple depicts all the phases of Hindu life, viz Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha and mythological stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata. The step well in the front of the temple is picturesque too. The temple was attacked by the savage invader Alauddin Khilji who defaced the figurines, the temple dome/ kalas and plundered the vast wealth of the temple, the gold, silver, diamonds and precious stones. The existing structure still bears testimony to the grand structure of a bygone era. It a a must to hire an authorised tourist guide to fully appreciate the grandeur, precision, mythological stories and archeological beauty of the Modhera Sun Temple.

Wow! Extremely beautiful. Peaceful and clean.
The Sun Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the solar Surya bhagwan located at Modgera village. It is situated on the bank of the river Pushpavati. It was built after 1026-27 CE during the reign of Chaulukya Dynasty.
Kudos to Gujarat government for keeping and maintaining this magnificent temple.

Awesome place. Visit the museum first and buy the information booklet from them. And then go visit the main temple. Both the museum and temple are in the same campus. The place is maintained well by the archeological society and a beautiful piece of architecture from the past. Worth visiting.
Entry fee of 25/- per person of indian origin as on this day of posting the review.
