Somnath Mahadev temple. The place is very peaceful. Now it has many amenities developed infront of the temple. Like big parking (paid) for cars and buses. Also can cook your food if have big groups traveling together. There is walkway along the coast also to have look at Arabian sea from close. One of the famous and first jyotirlinga of bagwan mahadev, photography is not allowed. We were able to get darshan, aarti very nicely. Sound and light show was cancelled due to covid protocol.

This place is good. I am seeing 1st JyothirLingam in Somnath. Temple is clean and green. Very devotee seeing 1st JyothirLingam, old and New. Temple duty people good cooperation not crushing. Darshan will be mostly 30 munits. So, we are very very happy the temple. Thankyou sow rastre somnath.

अलौकिक अनुभव, श्री सोमनाथ की सुंदरता को शब्दों में कहना कठिन है एक ओर इतिहास और संस्कृति को समेटे सोमनाथ है और दूसरी और अथाह समुद्र। सर्वप्रथम एक मंदिर ईसा के पूर्व में अस्तित्व में था जिस जगह पर द्वितीय बार मंदिर का पुनर्निर्माण सातवीं सदी में वल्लभी के मैत्रक राजाओं ने किया। आठवीं सदी में सिन्ध के अरबी गवर्नर जुनायद ने इसे नष्ट करने के लिए अपनी सेना भेजी। गुर्जर प्रतिहार राजा नागभट्ट ने 815 ईस्वी में इसका तीसरी बार पुनर्निर्माण किया। इस मंदिर की महिमा और कीर्ति दूर-दूर तक फैली थी। अरब यात्री अल-बरुनी ने अपने यात्रा वृतान्त में इसका विवरण लिखा जिससे प्रभावित हो महमूद ग़ज़नवी ने सन १०२४ में कुछ ५, ००० साथियों के साथ सोमनाथ मंदिर पर हमला किया, उसकी सम्पत्ति लूटी और उसे नष्ट कर दिया। ५०, ००० लोग मंदिर के अंदर हाथ जोडकर पूजा अर्चना कर रहे थे, प्रायः सभी कत्ल कर दिये गये।

Not as expected in terms of preservation of heritage structure. Too much strictness in carrying things alongs while entering temple. Location is beautiful. Needs improvement in providing green space and tree plantations. Too much of concrete and paver blocks which makes the place too hot to even stand for some time. Need to do some measures for greenery. Parking facilities were good. The place was neat and clean.

This Chalukya-style temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is one of the most thronged Places to visit in Somnath and has many fascinating mythological stories attached to it. One such is that Moon God who lost his light and glory due to curse by Daksha got back his lustre by praying fervently to Lord Shiva at Somnath Temple and that Bhagvan Shree Krishna had built Somnath temple with Sandalwood.

There are inscriptions on the Arrow-Pillar or Baan-Stambh of the temple which says that there is no piece of land in straight line between the temple and Antarctica to the south. A flag flutters atop the main spire which is 15 metres tall. The Sound & Light Show “Jay Somnath” featured every night from 8.00 pm to 9.00 pm is definitely worth watching.

सोमनाथजी के मंदिर की व्यवस्था और संचालन का कार्य सोमनाथ ट्रस्ट के अधीन है। सरकार ने ट्रस्ट को जमीन, बाग-बगीचे देकर आय का प्रबन्ध किया है। यह तीर्थ पितृगणों के श्राद्ध, नारायण बलि आदि कर्मो के लिए भी प्रसिद्ध है। चैत्र, भाद्रपद, कार्तिक माह में यहां श्राद्ध करने का विशेष महत्व बताया गया है। इन तीन महीनों में यहां श्रद्धालुओं की बडी भीड़ लगती है। इसके अलावा यहां तीन नदियों हिरण, कपिला और सरस्वती का महासंगम होता है। इस त्रिवेणी स्नान का विशेष महत्व है।

Somnath TempleSomnath Temple is a significant temple, comprising one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Somnath Temple stands as a symbol of rich cultural heritage of India. The mention of this ancient temple has been made in the scriptures like 'Rig Veda' of the Hindu origin. The term Somnath suggests 'the protector of Moon God'. Lord Shiva is depicted here in the form of a Jyotirlinga (linga of light), as the protector. The incredible temple of Somnath is called as 'the Shrine Eternal' since, the temple has been shattered for not less than six times and every time, it has been reconstructed.  

Legend

Somnath Temple has a legend behind its establishment. It is believed that Lord Chandra (Moon God) was very proud of his beauty. Due to this reason, he was cursed by his father-in-law Daksha, to get smaller. In order to get rid of this curse, Moon God prayed to Lord Shiva at Prabhas. Lord Shiva became happy with the penance of the Moon and reduced the curse to an extent. This incident led to the periodic waning of moon.

History 

Maintaining the original site, the present temple is said to have built for the seventh time. The first temple of Somnath is regarded as a structure in Gold, made by Moon God himself. In the 7th century, Somnath Temple was reconstructed by Maitraka kings of Vallabhi in Gujarat. The second structure was destroyed by the Arab governor of Sind by the name of Junayad in 725. Again in 815, the third structure was built by Nagabhata II, who was a Pratihara King.  

This structure was erected out of red sandstone. In 1024, the temple was raided by Mahmud Ghazni, who took camel-loads of jewels and valuables from here. The Paramara King Bhoj of Malwa and the Solanki King Bhima of Gujarat (Anhilwara) took the initiative to rebuild the temple during 1026-1042. For the fifth time, the wooden structure was replaced with a stone structure by Kumarpal.

Consequently, the temple was destroyed in 1297 by the Sutanat of Delhi and once again in 1394. The last attack was made by the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb in 1706. The present temple was built in 1995 by Shree Somnath Trust in the company of the Government of India. Today, Somnath Temple is under the maintenance of Shree Somnath Trust.  

Architecture

The seven-storied structure of Somnath is tall to 155 feet. Constructed in the Chalukya style of architecture, Somnath Temple reflects the expertise of the Sompuras that are master masons of Gujarat. The temple is sited in such a manner that no mass of land can be seen from Somnath seashore till Antarctica. This information is presented in an inscription, written in Sanskrit, on the Arrow-Pillar of the sea-protection wall at the temple.  

In the words of Dr. Rajendra Prasad (the first president of India), "Somnath Temple signifies that the power of creation is always greater than the power of destruction". The great history and religious importance of Somnath temple attracts pilgrims as well as tourists from India and abroad.

Everything is fine the only problem here is they should provide some kind of mat so that people can walk on it. It is really hard and painful to walk on sun ray heated floors.

The best season to visit Somnath is the winter season. The temperature remains comfortable and is apt for sightseeing. The best months to visit are October, November, December, January, February and March.

There are no regular flights from other major cities of the country to Somnath. Nearest airport is Diu Airport. Somnath is well connected to other major cities of the country via regular trains. You can easily get regular buses to Somnath from other major cities of the country.

The site of Somnath has been a pilgrimage site from ancient times on account of being a Triveni sangam  (the confluence of three rivers: Kapila, Hiran and Sarasvati).  Soma, the Moon god, is believed to have lost his lustre due to a curse, and he bathed in the Sarasvati River at this site to regain it. The result is the waxing and waning of the moon, no doubt an allusion to the waxing and waning of the tides at this seashore location. The name of the town Prabhas, meaning lustre, as well as the alternative names Someshvar and Somnath ("The lord of the moon" or "the moon god") arise from this tradition.

The earlier temples were destroyed 16 times by the intruders for looting the valuables. The present temple was built in 1951 by the funds raised by people. Ancient Indian traditions maintain a close relationship of Somnath with release of Chandra (Moon God) from the curse of his father-in-law Daksha Prajapati. Moon was married to Twenty-Seven daughters of Daksha. However, he favoured Rohini and neglected other queens. The aggrieved Daksha cursed Moon and the Moon lost power of light. With the advice of Prajapita Brahma, Moon arrived at the Prabhas Teerth and worshipped Bhagvan Shiva. Pleased with the great penance and devotion of Moon, Bhagvan Shiva blessed him and relieved him from the curse of darkness.

Within the temple complex there is arrow mark pointing to south pole. It says "The light path stretching without obstruction up to the south pole over the end of the ocean".

Waist belt, Mobile phone, Camera and shoes are prohibited inside temple.
There are free stalls available to deposit your shoe and other items. Lockers are available to keep your camera and phones before entering.

It is advisable to go for morning aarthi as it is not crowded. After evening Aarthy you can witness Light and Sound Show.

The best place in entire Somnath. Very peaceful and serene view from the temple backyard. You can view the Arabian sea waves crashing on the temple walls. A family place. Best time to visit is during prayers.
