It's a fort which used to accommodate whole town in it. Great place- not to be missed. Very historical place. If you can go on foot it is definitely better but if you can not, there is an electrical car which takes you to the places in the fort. It takes around 2 hrs to move around and if you can spend little more time it should be better. It is restored recently but still more work has to be done.
Really, it is worth to see and enjoy the old huge Uparkot Fort. Perfect renovated, everywhere so clean, enjoyable walk along the wall. Many possibilities to sit on a bench under a tree for a short rest and relaxing. A great compliment!
Beautiful place. Worth Visiting Ticket price -100rs for outsiders Well conserved and protected monument.
A fort and town was established at the foothills of Girnar hill during reign of the Maurya Empire and continued to be used during Gupta period, but it lost its importance when the capital of Saurashtra region was moved from Junagadh to Vallabhi by Maitraka. Chudasamas settled around Junagadh from 875 CE according to bards when they acquired Vamansthali (Vanthli) from Chavda ruler. [3]
A 10th-century Abhira Chudasama king[4][5] Graharipu Ahir (r.c. 940-c. 982) [6][7][8] cleared the old citadel free from the jungle. From the evidence contained in the Hemchandra's Dvyashraya, it can be concluded that Graharipu laid the foundations of the citadel as it now exists.the legend is told about its rediscovery. [3]
Legendedit
After several Chudasamas of Vamansthali had ruled, a woodcutter one day managed to cut his way through the forest and came to a place where stone walls and a gate existed. Nearby sat a holy man in contemplation, and on being asked by the woodcutter the name of the place and its history, he replied that its name was "Juna" — old. The woodcutter returned by the way he had come to Vamansthali, and reported his discovery to the Chudasama ruler, who ordered the forest to be cleared away. This being done, the fort came into sight. But there was none who knew its history, or who could tell more than the holy man had told the woodcutter. So the place became known as "Junagadh" for want of a better title. [9]
If this story is to be believed, either Graharipu rediscovered an ancient stronghold or else after he had built the fort, it was abandoned and afterwards found again by a later ruler Navaghana who transferred Chudasama capital from Vamansthali to Junagadh. [9][3]
Restorationsedit
In 1893-94, Haridas Viharidas, the Dewan of Junagadh State, had restored the fort. [10]
In July 2020, the Government of Gujarat initiated the restoration of the fort and the structures inside it at the cost of ₹44.46 crore (US$5.6 million). The project will be completed in 18 months. [11]
History of uparkot fort: This ancient fort is believed to have been built in 319 BC by the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta, though it has been extended many times. In places, the ramparts reach 20m high. It's been besieged 16 times, and legend has it that the fort once withstood a 12-year siege.

The oldest part of Junagadh, and the center of any visit to the city, is the upper citadel, known as Uparkot. Over 2300 years old, with walls up to 20 m high in some places, Uparkot is what allowed Junagadh to withstand a 12-year siege at one point. It is believed that these caves belong to 1st-4th Century AD and are gilded with beautiful pillars and entrances, water cisterns, horseshoe shaped chatiya windows, an assembly hall and cell for meditation. There is also a 300 ft. -deep moat inside the walls, that reportedly used to be inhabited by crocodiles, so that if any attacker managed to surmount the high fortifications, they would then either be exposed on the upper battlements or fall into the crocodile-infested trench.
An early structure, Uparkot Fort, is located on a plateau in the middle of town. It was originally built in 319 BCE during the Mauryan dynasty by Chandragupta. The fort remained in use until the 6th century, when it was abandoned for about 300 years, then rediscovered by the Chudasama ruler Graharipu in 976 CE. The fort was subsequently besieged 16 times over an 1000-year period. One unsuccessful siege lasted twelve years.
Within 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) of Uparkot Fort is an inscription with fourteen Edicts of Ashoka on a large boulder. The inscriptions are in Brahmi script in a language similar to Pali and date from 250 BCE. On the same rock there is a later inscription in Sanskrit, which was added around 150 CE by Mahakshatrap Rudradaman I, the Saka (Scythian) ruler of Malwa, and a member of the Western Kshatrapas dynasty, and which has been described as "the earliest known Sanskrit inscription of any extent". Another inscription dates from about 450 CE and refers to Skandagupta, the last Gupta emperor. Old rock-cut Buddhist caves in this area, dating from well before 500 CE, have stone carvings and floral work. There are also the Khapra Kodia Caves north of the fort, and the Bava Pyara Caves south of the fort. The Bava Pyara caves contain artworks of both Buddhism and Jainism.
The Maitraka dynasty ruled Gujarat from 475 to 767 CE. The founder of the dynasty, General Bhatarka, military governor of Saurashtra peninsula under the Gupta empire, established himself as the independent ruler of Gujarat around the last quarter of the 5th century.
Uparkot Fort is a historical fort which was constructed by the Mauryan Emperor Chandragupta, somewhere around the 319 BC. The fort is located on the east side of Junagadh which consist of a beautiful mosque, a set of Buddhist caves and a pair of step-wells.
As per legends, it is believed that this fort once withstood 12-years of the military blockade. Standing on the rooftop, one can have a gorgeous view of the whole city and at night, the sight becomes really celestial.
Junagadh is very nice, good people to interact, here you can get Mughal architecture as well as nearby Buddhist caves architecture. A nice place to visit. An inexpensive city and a fine place for all travellers
It's a great historical place but disappointed. That very dirty and no control of corporation over vender and food stall.they are destroying our heritage sites.
It's Indian cultural place. About 1400 years ago, a magnificent well was erected here by King Navgan. There is also the temple of the goddess Khodiyar Mata, the clan of King Navaghan. The natural beauty there is also the center of attraction of the people.it is nice place to visit.
It's a heritage fort in the Junagadh. You can spend and explore there so many places like Bodh Gufa, Rani no Mahel, Adikadi Vav (Stepwell), Navghan Kuvo (Well).
My mother was born in this fort. Her name is Noor Un Nisa daughter of Syed Hussain Shah Bukhari. She lived in this fort for 17 years and left the fort during partition war.
There is not proper parking facility available over there. Place is extremely dirty and you can see trash everywhere. It is biggest failure of Gujarat tourism department. There is no proper management to take care of this historical place. JMC and Gujarat government should take care of this place.

Interesting fort including a nice entrance gate, a palace, Buddhist caves and two wells. The palace is beautiful but the caves and wells need maintenance and rehabilitation.
