Bhakra Nangal Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Satluj River in Bhakra Village near Bilaspur in Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh in northern India. The dam forms the Gobind Sagar reservoir.

The dam is located at a gorge near the (now submerged) upstream Bhakra village in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh and is of height 226 m. [1] The length of the dam (measured from the road above it) is 518.25 m and the width is 9.1 m. Its reservoir known as "Gobind Sagar" stores up to 9.34 billion cubic metres of water. The 90 km long reservoir created by the Bhakra Dam is spread over an area of 168.35 km2. In terms of quantity of water, it is the third largest reservoir in India, the first being Indira Sagar dam in Madhya Pradesh with capacity of 12.22 billion cubic meters and second Nagarjunasagar Dam.

Described as "New Temple of Resurgent India" by Jawaharlal Nehru, [2] the first prime minister of India, the dam attracts tourists from all over India. Bhakra dam is 15 km from Nangal town, Punjab and 106 km from Bilaspur

Nangal Dam is another dam in Punjab downstream of Bhakra Dam. However, sometimes both the dams together are called Bhakra-Nangal Dam though they are two separate dams

The Bhakra-Nangal multipurpose dams were among the earliest river valley development schemes undertaken by India after independence though the project had been conceived long before India became a free nation. The agreement for this project had been signed by the then Punjab Revenue Minister, Sir Chhotu Ram in November 1944 with Raja of Bilaspur and finalised the project plan on 8 January 1945. Preliminary works commenced in 1946. Construction of the dam started in 1948; Jawaharlal Nehru poured the first bucket of concrete into the dry riverbed of the Sutlej on 17 November 1955, as a symbolic initiation of the work. Addressing a gathering there, he said, "This is a gift to the people of India and to the future generations from the workers who built this dam", calling for "raising a memorial" at the dam "in honour" of the workers. [3] The dam was completed by the end of 1963. Successive stages were completed by the early 1970s.

Firstly the when we reached the location we weren't allowed to get in the dam because of suicide cases (that is for everyone), and also for our surprise we weren't allowed to click pics too, just go there, if you want to eat, eat at surrounding dhabas, have some boating in Gobind Sarovar and come back watching beautiful scenery

Visiting Bhåkrå was a joy ride. Roads are in awesome condition and you can visit the museum to know the history and efforts this Dam took. You may a need a pass (free of cost) to visit Bhåkrå.

Nice location but not place for photo, photo prohibited, can see dam from sides not from top of it

VERY NICE PLACE FOR TOURIST MUST VISIT THE DAM AND VERY GOOD ATMOSPHERE AND GREENARY EVERYWHERE. SUPPLYING WATER FOR DELHI, HARYANA, PUNJAB AND HIMACHAL PRADESH

It's the best place to enjoy and get knowledge about art of Engineering. The Dam situated near by the Anandpur Sahib if you want to one day tour with family or love one's you came here to enjoy Boating, you can try sea food Fish fritters is best option to enjoy on river side.
After this you can also go to Handola Bridge which is also a good place in Nangal. If you are Nature lover it's also been a Best place to make your trip memorable.

Majestic dam. Supplying water and electricity to Himachal, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
Boating is 700/- for 30 minutes

Covid effected the tourists lure for bhakra dam. Dam Exhibition is also closed, nothing to watch more than dam few kilometers away and taking pictures. Daily wagers & dhabas almost lost their business due to less tourist attraction.

The place is really nice to visit if you plan a one day out. It can easily be visited from tricity area within a day. You may as well visit Anandpur Sahib Gurudwara and Virasat E Khalsa if you start early in the day.

This is the beauty, photography is not allowed so I didn't take one. I have this experience in my brain. I have been there thrice but it never fails to amaze me.

It is not possible to go on the dam but visiting the lake is possible, must visit and eat here fry fish on the bank of lake

Great view but not that great to have a visit. If you can then must visit with your Vagon try to avoid public transport.

It's good but there is nothing special there.boating is too costly it's 400 for 15 min 700 for 1/2 hour for two.
At bhakra dam it hardly take 5 min to see that bcz photos are also not allowed there.so u left with just boating.

Pure enviornment, huge mountains ️, no another option expect for boating, overall good place to break monotony

I visited Bhakra Dam with my Mamu & cousins on a one day excursion. Initially, it was just a short trip to taste the delicacy of Nangal (near by city) “Boneless Fried Fish” But when we start the journey, sky was full of clouds and we decided to explore the beauty of "Bhakra Dam", which turns out a very good decision, we enjoyed our whole trip in the drizzle. We also took a ride in a boat on Govind Sagar Lake, which was good but Tourism department has needed to work in this area. There is no information centre nearby to help tourists, no emergency department to handle any accident, which is showing the unprofessionalism of government departments. They can establish this area as a top class tourist spot which can transform the lives of local people in many folds. Government also needs to work on roads which are not as good as it should be. Overall, it was a great experience with few flaws. Hope state & centre government departments work hard to establish this area as a great tourist hub.

Fantastic, but they not allowed to have a look from the Dam itself, so that's was unexpected. Rest all views and cleanliness was fabulous.

It is a legend itself. A huge dam built in 1956, one of the largest dam in India, a power house for North India. Best time to visit between October to March. Vishyat Technologies team goes there once in a year for a short trip.

BHAKRA DAM A 226 m high, 518 m long concrete straight gravity dam has been
constructed across Sutlej river to generate 1204 MW power having a gross storage of 9621 M.cu.mn.
The dam is located on thick sandstone bands interbedded with bands of siltstone and claystone. The beds dip an angle of 70 in the downstream direction at and strike NW-SE that is slightly oblique to the axis of the dam. A claystone band, 9 m thick, occurs in the middle third section (MTC) of the dam which out in the is repeated by a strike fault and pinches river section. Shear zones varying in width from 5 m to 18m were recorded in the sandstone bands occurring along the axis and toe of the dam. A number of gently
downstream dipping 'cross shears' ranging in thickness from 15 cm to 150 cm occur on either abutments. Two major beds of claystone, 30 m and 76 m in thickness respectively, occur in the immediate upstream and
downstream of the dam section and have been locally rleferred as heel' claystone and 'appron claystone.
Average compressive strength of sandstone and clay-stone varies from 562 kg/cm to 1069 kg/cm and 123 to 337 kg/cm respectively. Deflection tests carried out in the drifts indicated that the modulus of elasticity of good sandstone varied from 2.03x 10°kg/ cm to 3.58x10°kg/cm. The value of shattered sand-stone was about 1.19x10 kg/cm which improved to
2.1 x103 kg/cm after grouting operations.
The major foundation problems were posed by the following adverse geological features in the foundation: Steeply dipping shear zones and claystone bands posing problem of shear and settlement.
Gentle downstream dipping cross-shear zones in the abutments which posed problems of shear, settlement and seepage by-passing the key-section in the abutments.
Highly fractured and jointed nature of the competent members of the foundation posed problem of uplift pressures in the foundation.

Loved it. U will enjoy here in the lap of the nature. Drinkers can have drinks with fish in open sky. Fresh fish from bhakra waters is served here. Must go for boating. Boating charges 400 bucks for half an hour. Beware of waanar sena if you are eating anything other than non veg in open.

Loved the place. Although reached late there, so I only got the chance to do boating there but it was paisa vasool.

What a great experience on the dam road on the massive water body of Sutlej river, But we cannot stop our vehicle or take pictures.

A good place to visit during day time.good for family picnic also. But has not much food options nearby. But an okay place to visit. Boat ride is good.

Beautiful place to visit. Always keep adhar card if planning to come here. Without adhar you are not allowed to go further.it is needed at the time to make pass. Avoid National holidays.

अगर आप यहां बाइक से आते है तो रास्ता में एकदम जन्नत सा नजारा देखने को मिलेगा, बहुत ही सुन्दर पर प्राकृतिक नजारा देखने को मिलता है, यहां अगर आओ तो जलदवाजी ना करना आराम से घूमना और संती और सुन्दर प्राकृतिक वातावरण का आनंद लेना, अगर आ घर बैठे ये पोस्ट पढ़ रहे हो तो सोचो मत, बहुत अच्छा जगह है वक्त निकालो और अपना जिंदगी का खूबसूरत पल बिताओ प्राकृतिक के गोद में, फिर अहसास होगा कि अपना प्राकृतिक कितना अनमोल है।

I've been here tons of time the serenity of the place makes me feel better evertime. It's not just a man-made wonder but a nature's feast to eyes too. It's just amazing.

Great scenic view. Huge enormous dam at Nangal. Water is so clean. You will surely luv the view. One needs to take visitor permit before 3: 30 PM. Make sure to carry your adhar card copy (soft copy would do). Nothing much to do on the top. You may go to Naina Devi Mandir from dam. Beware of monkeys at the top. Camera not allowed. However you may capture the breathtaking view from your mobile phone

Nothing to visit here, if planning for some kind of outing do not visit it is just outside view if passing through the road, no entrance in DAM area. It is strictly restricted so no one can visit.

Need pass to visit even outside view if you are going from Anandpur sahib route. Pass office closes at 3: 20 pm.
Another route is from Naina Devi, which is not recommended especially in rainy season.
Can't go to see inside view due to security reasons. Closed even for VVIPs.

Summer is not a season to there. Now you cannot go close to shops and cannot do the boating because of the ban of intelligence beuareau. All you can do is see the dam from outside. No special permission is needed but you must carry your personal ID. Photography are strictly prohibited in the area.

Make sure to get free ticket for Museum at check post, if you only get the normal gate pass from check post, than security at Bhakra Dam wont allow you to enter main Museum.

There is nothing to see as everything is close bound for tourists. Not even a place to have a view. U can just peep through the barbed fences just to have a glimpse of so clear green water beneath, that too after going through so many police barricades and checks. So much of hype for nothing!

Wao. Amazing construction, Never seen before such kind of largest water pool, totally astonished when i visited first time 4 year back. Water management board office situated in the great wall. Of Dam. No entry after 5 pm evening for security purpose. No photograph allowed too.

Beautiful location with clear torquise waters. Make sure you carry an Adhaar card so that you can apply for the free entry permit. Photography not allowed.nor can you get closer to the dam.dam entry is also not allowed. A total 2 check post have to be crossed.one for Punjab police and other for Himachal police. We went for a short visit on our way to Dharamshala. A km after the dam is a boating spot. Beautiful view of the Gobind Sagar lake can be seen there. Before the boating point there are plenty of fish eateries - apparantly they serve some fresh fish. We didn't have the time to try the same.
