Chandrataal Lake

Chandra Tal is the most charismatic lake I have seen in my entire life. Chandra Tal or Chander Tal or Moon Lake is a barren but beautiful lake located at an altitude of 14100 feet in Himachal Pradesh. It comes under Spiti and Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh and is situated at a distance of 6km from Kumzum Pass.

After going through a lots of bumpy roads and trails finally.you come to see this beautiful lake

This is place where you will enjoy the close proximity to the nature. You can see the various colours with your own naked eye. It is a perfect place to indulge into the calmness.

Another adventure that I embarked on during my trip to Manali was the Chandra Taal trek from Batal. Chandra Taal, also known as the Moon Lake, is a high-altitude lake located in the Spiti Valley.

The trek started from Batal, a small village located at an altitude of 4,100 meters. The trek was challenging, as we had to navigate through rocky terrain and steep inclines. However, the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys made it all worth it.

As we approached Chandra Taal, the landscape changed dramatically, and we were surrounded by snow-capped peaks and glaciers. The lake itself was a sight to behold, with crystal clear water reflecting the surrounding mountains.

We set up camp near the lake and spent the night under the stars. The silence and tranquility of the place were overwhelming, and it was an experience that I will never forget.

In conclusion, the Chandra Taal trek from Batal was an adventure of a lifetime. The rugged terrain, stunning views, and the serenity of the Moon Lake made it a truly unforgettable experience.

If you go through kunjum pass to manali, you will get this wonderful lake on the way. Little bit hiking needed. With mythological story and unparallal beauty, this lake theft your heart.

Visited again after 6 years and even though the place has become more commercial it is still a great place to visit. Would rate it higher than most other famous lakes in India.

Its a clear and transparent lake, surrounded by snow clad mountains.

Highest situated lake in the world at 4200m. Beautiful lake with breathtaking scenery around it. Blue/ Green water. Little trek after passing the parking for vehicles.

Feel the nature, long and tiring trek but worth going and enjoying the journey. Must visit once in a lifetime.

It's a good lake but not that epic as shown in posts and reels.lol. But yeah the road to reach is very thrilling if you are an off-road lover. The camps are 5-6 km before the lake and visiting hours for lake is 6 a.m to 7 p.m. You should do it while doing the spiti tours Don't just make a special platform online for this place.

Chandratal is one of the very beautiful lakes. With the changing light from the sky and sun position, the colours of the lake also change. Surrounded by all sides by mountains and hills, the lake gets its water from the melting winter snow during the summer months. Once you reach the Chandratal tent site, you have to make entry at the police check post to drive further to the Lake. A Parking has been created some 300m from the lake, from here one has to walk, but it is totally worth it.

This is a lovely place having religious importance. It is believed that Shri Yudhishthir entered the heaven from this lake and place. Also, locals believe that many fairies visit this place during the night and it is a place of outmost religious importance for them.
There are various campsites located nearby to the lake where people can book their stay.

This was a dream to go to Chandartal lake and camp there. The place is so beautiful. I recommend to ho early morning to avoid any rush and enjoy the feel.

Dream destination, Breathtaking beauty, must visit place, neat & clean lake side, totally worth it

We are going to see in fool moon night, very windy, good lake, but not like that much good like gurudongmar.

If you are going Hampta pass trek or package tour of Spiti.i will recommend it's a must go place.

Amazing and serene lake with amazing view. It’s at very high altitude so make sure you gain altitude slowly, possibly from Kaza to avoid AMS. And carry medicines for same in advance as it’s secluded and you won’t find any meds anywhere close to it and you’ll need to descend quickly.

Lake was good. But crusing towards this Lake is challenging just because of roads. Allover it was a great experience.

At more than 14000 feet, Chandra Taal is pristine and unspoilt lake, located in the middle of nowhere!

Beautiful pitstop enroute Kaza.

The lake is around an hours drive from Chacha Chachi da Dhaba, along the Chenab river and grainy terrain.
Once you reach a parking area, it takes another 10-15 mins walk to the lake.
As you walk along this path, the views are breathtaking!

The lake is larger than it seems and most people trek along the front end of the lake. Walking around the lake give you a different perspective altogether:)

The water is icy cold and one can take a dip in the shallow area.
There might be a few other lakes with the colorful beauty and unique landscape of Chandrataal Lake.

We weren't able to stay here, but the experience overnight with crystal clear skies is truly one of a kind.

Time taken to reach Chandratal lake from Manali is minimum 7 to 8 hours. Because most of the roads (80%) are in very bad condition.but the place is most beautiful place had ever seen

Must visit lake in Himachal Spiti valley … 7pm is the last working hour.no visitors allowed after 6pm … The lake is considered holy, please do not go and swim in the lake

The lake is very beautiful and a great place to click pictures. We have to walk a lot to reach the lake from the parking site.

Amazing. It's difficult to reach but once you are there it's heaven.
I dipped in the cold water, it was awesome. The aur is so crisp you can actually feel the crunch. The star gazing OMG, if you can bear the cold winds is a must. We were lucky to have some company in the night otherwise we would have gone hungry.

Tso Chikgma or Chandra Taal (meaning the Lake of the Moon) is a lake in the Lahaul part of the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh (India). Chandra Taal is near the source of the Chandra River. Despite the rugged and inhospitable surroundings, it is in a protected niche with some flowers and wildlife in summer. It is a favourite spot for tourists and high-altitude trekkers. It is usually associated with Spiti, but geographically is a part of Lahaul. Kunzum La separates Lahaul and Spiti valleys.

Another marvel and beauty. There is decent bit of trekking involved and I would suggest do it early in the morning of reach the lake around sunset time. The beauty gets added. Evening is suggested if you are staying where all the commercial camps are! Although, I would highly recommend spending a night while you are doing chandrataal lake. You are not allowed to camp here but I have seen people set up camps near the lake. I think it could be one helluva adventure.

The water is crystal clear. Should recommend to everyone to visit this place on the way from Losar to Manali. Its good place to see clear night sky, the stars are very clearly visible. Very peaceful place, only place to stay here are in the camps

One of the most peaceful places. The color of the water and the mountains makes this place so picturesque. Must visit place if you're going to Spiti Valley.

There is a story where there was a mermaid in this lake and used to come to the surface on the melody of a flute played by a boy. When the boy told this incident to everyone, she never returned and vanished. This lake looks magical during full moon. It's a must visit for camping, stargazing, etc.

This is a cool place.
Water is so clear that it makes the lake more beautiful.
One can witness the lake after a very simple trek.
The weather is very chilling, so don't forget to carry warm clothes.

The Chandra Taal is located at an elevation of 4,300m above sea level and has the Himalayas as the backdrop. This crescent shape lake is also known as the Lake of the Moon and is a popular tourist destination in Lahaul & Spiti. It is an important stop over for trekkers and campers who travel to the valley from the Kumzum Pass.
The region where the Chandra Taal is located is popular as the Samudra Tapu Plateau.
The river originated from this taal flows through Lahaul and Spiti and forms the Chenab River in the long course and merges with river Bhaga. The area around Chandra River is a cold desert and receives little rainfall throughout the year. As there are no villages on its banks, the place is tranquil and ideal for relaxing and angling.

A very nice and peaceful place in between those beautiful mountains. A challenging trek from the kunzum would be much more amazing than the usual route.

Pristine and peaceful when it's not crowded. You have to trek atleast one kilometer to reach here from the parking place. The trek is easy and very scenic.

Chandratal Lake is one of the best high altitude lake situated in Spiti Region of Himachal Pradesh.

It's requires a small trek to reach this mesmerizing location where one can experience the great and scenic view of this blue and clear water lake.

Beautiful place nature is best and lovely. Water is crystal clear. Parking is available about one km before the lake and their is beautiful trail on the meadows and take around 25mnt to reach there. Walk slowly here is lack of oxygen.

Outstanding beauty. Snow capped peaks and turquoise blue water of Chandratal lake is just awesome. Place is always very cold so do cover yourself with thick layers. One has to walk for 1-2 KMS approx to reach the lake. High altitude can hit one so be prepared. Keep the place clean and enjoy the beauty around.

If you trek the Kunzum Pass to Chandra taal, the view is way more better up with high mountains and beautiful glaciers on the way to Chandra taal from Kunzum La Pass.apart from that the lake in itself is pretty beautiful.

Chandratal Lake also called “The Moon Lake” in Spiti Valley is one of the most enchanting lakes in the Himalayas A lot of adventure lovers tread a long, treacherous and yet adventurous path over Rohtang Pass – Gramphu – Batalroad every year to see this wonderful offering from nature. Many of them search for the answers about making a budget trip to Chandratal lake.

The most beautiful lake I have ever seen in my life.
This place is so calm and serene that you just don't feel like doing anything.just sit on one rock, empty your mind and just keep staring at this lake and the mountains in the background.feels like heaven on Earth.
Reaching this place is not easy because of the river crossings on the way, but the efforts are totally worth it.
There are camp sites within a few km radius.we stayed at the Moonlake Camp site.they provide accommodation in swiss tents with dinner and breakfast.they are a tad expensive but considering the fact that this place is very remote we had no complains about it.the tents are pretty cozy.
People with breathing problems or history of AMS must avoiding staying here.the oxygen content here is very low.but you can surely visit the lake if you start early from Kaza and skip staying here.

The way to the lake has no proper road and is full of rocks but the destination is worth the journey. Nice views all around the 1 km walk to the lake. Must visit place in spiti valley. Leave early to avoid rivers flowing on road on the way back

It is situated at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (14,100 ft). From Manali it took 6 hours for us to reach there. When I saw the picture before I went there I thought it might be effects how can water be that blue.but when see it with my eye it's exactly what I saw in pics this photo I shared is from my digi cam.noo effects nothing simply picture we camped for one night. It's a memorable experience. At night we can see all the milky way of stars. Not even one tree I saw here and there no source of water I found. Clister clear water. I had bath there water was sooo cold I won't recommend bathing because I fell mountain sickness after that.one should go there for peaceful and hatke experience. No mobile networks.

It's a beautiful lake in between mountains. A very mini version of Pangong lake maybe. I went to Hampta pass trek and visited this lake at the last day. Taxis are available to go till the lake. It is a 15 minutes walk from parking to the lake and you will enjoy every minute there. The lake is very peaceful and you can spend hours there relaxing or walking besides it.
