Quite clean, nice, beautiful, & calm place to visit. You have to buy a ticket online to visit the temple & then you can go inside. It's a simple temple but, the artistry of cutting a single rock is an awesome experience.

The area is very peaceful, and neatly maintained.

The site of 18 temples carved out of a single rock, now only 1 left. Beautiful but super badly maintained. Himachal govt does not care much for it's monuments in general. But the place is awesome and the stall outside serves the most amazing momos, maggi and tea.

Masrur rock-cut temples are not only spiritually significant but also an important archaeological site. They are a group of 15 monolithic rock-cut temples made in Indo-Aryan style. Though a major part of them is in ruins, one can study the relics with ease. It is believed that the temple was built between 8th and 9th centuries.

It is a cluster of 15 rocks that have been carved out of a single rock. Located 40 km west of Kangra, this temple complex is popular for its distinguished architecture. As you enter the complex, you will be left mesmerised by the beautiful sight of the temple getting reflected in the Masroor Lake, located nearby.

The tickets to this place are available online and via qr code at the location. It's better to purchase them and then step in as it takes long to do it at the location. (weak mobile network etc)

Interesting monolith temple to visit locally recommended for the mythology fact of being built by Pandavas. The only harrowing time you'll face is making a digital payment for entry due to Himachal Govts idea of showcasing digital advancement of the state. It took us 45 mins to scan n make just 60 Rs for 3 people. To the ASI website toggling between 2 apps, poor Network n almost cancelling the visit twice. Poor staff who are simply not geared to help you out Incase of difficulty of making digital payment. After such a poor experience you don't have an appetite left to explore the place entirely like it happened with us.

Its very quite and different place to see.very good experience who like places without to much peoples. This is very famous place located in Kangra (HP). This also known as ajanta ellora of Himachal Pradesh.

The famous rock cut temples of Masroor are said to have been made by Pandavas during their period of exile on a single rock. This is a site of archaeological survey of India.

According to local residents Pandavas of the Mahabharata fame resided here during their “incognito” exile from their kingdom and built this temple. During construction, as their identity and location was exposed, they shifted from here. This is the reason for the unfinished part of the temple complex. It was damaged in 1905 earthquake. But still it's able to tell his story.

Masroor Rock cut temple is a nice place to visit. It is near the Pong Lake, near Nagrota Suriyan. You can access the place from Ranital as well.

The temple itself is cut from a monolithic rock. From a distance, it does resemble the Angkor Wat temple but is much smaller than that. There are some intricate carvings in the temple but the structure itself has suffered significant damage in the 1905 earthquake.

It is definetely worth a visit if you have about an hour to spare for seeing the place. The road leading to the place is also nice. If you are the kind to walk a bit, you can walk down from the Temple to Pir Vindli (a distance of 3Kms downhill) and enjoy the mountains.

ASI has done a good job of maintaining the place neat and clean. They also have clean restrooms there. There is an entrance fee of Rs 50 (for Indians).

If you have your own vehicle, you have to take a deviation at Lund, on the Ranital - Nagrota Suriyan road, then onto Pir Vindli and then to Masroor.

If you are on a local bus, then the above points are where you change for buses. We did this. Only that the bus frequencies are not that high. Plan for extra hour for waiting for the buses.

This is a fantastic historical monument, although a bit far from Dharamshala it is worth a visit. I would rate this first in the list of tourist attractions around Dharmashala.
There is no restaurant anywhere in the vicinity but an extremely clean wash room is provided.

A marvelous piece of great Indian ancient architecture. The Masroor Rock Cut Temples is wonderful piece of art work. One can't even imagine that such magnificent structures exists at that height. It's even impossible today to built such huge temple complex at this height.
The site is properly maintained by Archeological Survey of India, essential facilities like rest room drinking water is available.
Overall it's a must visit!

Rock-cut Temples at Masrur, an early 8th-century complex of Hindu temples in Kangra Valley.
The temples were carved out of one monolithic rock cut from top to bottom with a sacred pool of water. Masrur show similarities to Elephanta Caves near Mumbai (1,900 km away), Angkor Wat in Cambodia (4,000 km away), & the rock-cut temples at Mahabalipuram in TN (2,700 km away).

On way to dharmshala from shimla. They are about 20 kilometres of the way and took is about an hour one way to reach there. But i was happy that I took the detour. What I saw there was pleasing to the eye and the soul as well. I suggest if you have 3 hours to spare p on your journey from to shimla to mc-leodganj. U can opt for this place. It was a nice experience and I enjoyed my self seeing the rock cut temple as well as the lancaping around it.

Not worth going to if staying in Dharamshala or Mcleodganj. Small temple, not much to see. Original vishnu/ shiv statues have been replaced by recent ones of ram etc which was a HUGE disappointment

The temple belongs to Pandav's reign. It's very beautiful for enthusiasts but have been destroyed massively. One can see the remains of temple now. But its worth visiting once.

The artfull place.after visit you have to know the importance of this place.
The Masrur Temples, also referred to as Masroor Temples or Rock-cut Temples at Masrur, is an early 8th-century complex of rock-cut Hindu temples in the kangra of Beas River in Himachal Pradesh, India. The temples face northeast, towards the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas.  They are a version of North Indian Nagara architecture style, dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, Devi and Saura traditions of Hinduism, with its surviving iconography likely inspired by a henotheistic framework. Though a major temples complex in the surviving form, the archaeological studies suggest that the artists and architects had a far more ambititious plan and the complex remains incomplete. Much of the Masrur's temple's sculpture and reliefs have been lost. They were also quite damaged, most likely from earthquakes.

The temples were carved out of monolithic rock with a shikhara, and provided with a sacred pool of water as recommended by Hindu texts on temple architecture. The temple has three entrances on its northeast, southeast and northwest side, two of which are incomplete. Evidence suggests that a fourth entrance was planned and started but left mostly incomplete, something acknowledged by the early 20th-century colonial era archaeology teams but ignored leading to misidentification and erroneous reports.  The entire complex is symmetrically laid out on a square grid, where the main temple is surrounded by smaller temples in a mandala pattern. The main sanctum of the temples complex has a square plan, as do other shrines and the mandapa. The temples complex features reliefs of major Vedic and Puranic gods and goddesses, and its friezes narrate legends from the Hindu texts.

The temple complex was first reported by Henry Shuttleworth in 1913 bringing it to the attention of archaeologists.  They were independently surveyed by Harold Hargreaves of the Archaeological Survey of India in 1915. According to Michael Meister, an art historian and a professor specializing in Indian temple architecture, the Masrur temples are a surviving example of a temple mountain-style Hindu architecture which embodies the earth and mountains around it.

Peaceful place to visit unlike all those crowded religious place. It's more of a archeological wonder. Best time to visit is early morning.

One of the most amazing places I have been to. An 8th century structure carved out from a monolithic rock in the middle of the hills is a sight for sore eyes. There are benches to sit around in the shade and enjoy this masterpiece. There is a water body in the front of the temple which adds to its opulence.
