Recently on 26th July 23 visited Namgyal Monastery in McLeod Ganj is a tranquil haven that envelopes visitors in a serene atmosphere. Namgyal Monastery comes with a deep history. Located in McLeodganj in the Kangra district, this hermitage was founded by the third Dalai Lama. Earlier meant for conducting daily Tibetan customs, this historical monastery was moved to Dharamshala soon after the Tibetan Revolt. It accommodates around 200 monks who are involved in preserving the rare skills, rituals, tantric practices, Buddhist scriptures and culture which they brought from Tibet. The new version of this monastery is also known as Namgyal Tantric College. Known as “the Dalai Lama Temple”, the monastery now acts as a personal monastery for the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. This beautiful monastery built in a calm scenic hilltop in McLeod Ganj has grown in reputation as a tourist hotspot of Dharamshala.

Apart from serving as a private place of worship for the Dalai Lama, the serene ambience of the place and the rich history produce a mesmerizing effect on the visitors from around the world. Namgyal had already earned its fame in Lhasa and since its restoration in India, the monastery has spread its wings across the Atlantic. In 1992 the Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies was built in New York, Ithaca, which is directly under the influence of the Namgyal Monastery of Dharamshala.

Very peaceful places in the middle of a very busy Mcleodganj street. Must visit if you are interested in the tibetian culture. Make sure you sit around the monastery if you have the time too!

Namgyal Monastery is one of the most peaceful and amazing place to visit in Mcleodganj. It's a also known as Dalai lama temple. It's a perfect place to see the life of lamas, how they follow their rituals. There is a main praying haul where Buddhist monks do meditations and other rituals.
It was a mesmerizing experience to seek into the life of monks and how they are trying to achieve "Nirwana".
They also offer Prasad to the visitors.
The Buddhist monk of Mcleodganj follow Mahayan.
There are many sculptures and paintings of God (although Hinyaan which is considered as the original philosophy of Buddha doesn't believe in God).
You'll also find the wheels of time which is the way to get the blessings of god.

Very calm, well maintained and clean monestry to visit Mcleodganj! The prayer place, the lord Buddha statues in the temple, the prayer wheels and lanterns give you a wave of calm and will amaze you with their craftsmanship!
It's very close to the Mcleodganj market, so do visit here if you plan to go to the market.

A place to visit for peace and calmness. Have been to many tourist religious places all over India but Mcloadgunj and specially this monestry has something special. Visited there in March 2018 the pre COVID era. There were some festivities were going on. Have a very little idea about the celebrations which were going on there. We had planned for only half an hour visit but we extended our plan for four hours. The views were so scene from monestry that we couldn't left early.
One thing I would suggest all visitors that is to keep some extra time and sit and try to hold your selves with the vide of the place. Best time to visit is October - December. But March was also good as temprature was around 13-14 degree only.

We had a very good experience and hope you also get the same.

Such a peaceful and beautiful monastery situated in mcleodganj dharmshala. Must visit place with family and friends too. It is also known as the Dalai Lama temple. Please maintain quiet silence here. View from the top was amazing you can see dhauladhar ranges from there. Parking facilities are also available near the temple. A small museum is also there you can do shopping here. You can try Himachali food also here.

Also known as Dalai Lama temple, situated in the heart of Mcleodganj is the adobe of his holiness Dalai Lama, Namgyal monastery.

One of the main attractions in Dharmasala. Place with good vibes. Peaceful, can sit quite for hours away from your mind chattering as there is very less topics to engage in. The monastery is accessible from the Mall Road, about 800m from the Mall. It has awesome views and entry is free of cost. Though, your bag will be checked thoroughly for any dangerous or sharp materials. There is also a college where young monks learn and practice the various ritualistic traditions of Buddhism.

You need to just see it from outside as visitors are not allowed in as Dalai lama stays here (as told by locals). But you have a good shopping place around it.

For those craving a bit of peace and quiet, a chances to meditate in a nice spiritual space. I have seen many Monasteries in Northern india including the Great one at Mcleodganj, where Dalai Lama stays and many more. But I never expected that such a big monastery will be there in South India. It's near to Coorg.

A monastery situated in an excellent location with sweeping views. It's a pity photographs are banned inside the sanctum. Art work is indescribable.

Not much to see. No architecture nothing. It's located in main market. People generally spend less than 5 mins here

The images that you see online, are the pictures of Namgyal Monastery of Lasha, Tibet. This one, in McLeodgunj, is just a branch of it, and not very impressive. If you are spiritual and interested in Tibetan Buddhism, you may enjoy.

I think we have a lot of photos in reviews which do not match with the place. It is a small monastery but peaceful enough to calm your soul.

It is so peaceful to just go there and observe all the spiritual setting and the monks going about doing their routine rituals. We visited this place as a part of our college trip. You can take a bus to this place. There are various eateries outside the monastery especially the local momos are good. The people are really cute and sweet to talk to but a bit shy. You should take your time out and explore this place with a serene view and enjoy your visit as long as you're there.

A true spiritual place to visit, where you can saw the Buddhist traditions in detail. The nature here is just so calm that you can feel the calmness and spirituality in the air. It feels so comforting and good to be here.

An important Tibetan monastery but not the best infrastructure wise (across Buddhist temples).

Very good calm and quite place to meditate. Residents and other visiting/local Tibetans are very humble and helps to understand the spiritual significance and how it's base is linked with Indian spiritual culture.

The Tsuglagkhang Complex, has Dalai Lama Temple, Tibet Museum and Namgyal Monastery.
On the ground floor, you have the Museum, where all the pictures are displayed showing how China cruelly ruins the place.
On first floor, there is an open space to sit and enjoy the weather and Chants.
Temple is on second floor, which is very very beautiful, clean and organised. If you are lucky, you may get the amazing Prasad.

This monastery is inside Dalai lama temple only and it is not allowed to go inside monastery. But Dalai lama temple is a very nice place to visit. Luckily I had tebitan food in the temple in the form of bhandara. The food was quite simple and tasty.

Namgyal Monastery is the home of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. When in Dharmshala one must visit the Tsuglak khang complex and Namgyal Monastery, which is the home of the Dalai Lama and largest Tibetan temple outside Tibet.

This place is must to visit while you're in Dharamshala, although we're not about to meet H. H Dalai Lama (heard about his health issues). People sometime get to see him, significantly you will find here a lot of sweet and chocolates. Go and grab them as Prasad!

It's a small place with a main Sanctum inside surrounded by some nice views. You can spend a maximum of half an hour here.

Nice place to sit down and meditate. Serene and pristine surroundings. However, be careful of locals, they treat non Tibetans as second grade people, misguide and mistreat you

A must visit place. Here on the way u find first museum. 2 documentary flims have been showing for rs 10 per person only for first 2 weeks of December. Timing 11am and 3 pm. One can buy books, postcards, map of Tibet which will cost you from rs 100 to 300.
Then u find office, temple and akalchakra temple. Some tibetians are doing their prayer. U can carry some biscuits, soft drinks to offer as a prayer to lord Budhha.
An eternal peace has been found here and i request you to maintain the same while ur visiting. I have to give credit to all of the resident of mcloyed for clenness. On the road one can find plenty of dustbins. As a tourist we should also maintain the same.
