State Library Shimla

The library was established in the year 1986. Before that it was the Municipal Library and it was upgraded to the State Library status.
The beautiful building was constructed in the year 1860 and follows the neo-Tudor style of architecture. It is one of the Ist buildings constructed by the Britishers in the town. Since its construction it has been put to many different uses with minor internal modifications.

It housed the Shimla Volunteer Corps and the Health Department and the Station. After that it was given to the Municipal Library, which was later redesignated as State Library. Many modifications were made to the interiors when the building was converted to a library.

The building is two storey. On the ground floor are the Stack Hall, Technical Section and Circulation Desk. On the Ist floor are the Librarian's Room, Office, Reference Section, Children Section, Magazine Section and Reading Room.

The library is located at the most famous spot in the city, called the Ridge. It is considered to be the heart of the city and the place is always alive with tourists from different parts of India and abroad throughout the year. It offers a scenic view of the hills and valleys on all sides. The library with its classic building architecture adds to the beauty of the location. On its right is the famous Christ Church, believed to be the 1st church in the city.
Best Time to visit State Library Shimla
You can visit the State Library when you are on vacation in Shimla. The library is open all year around, from Tuesday to Sunday. The weekly off is on Monday. The timings of the Library are from 10 am in the morning to 5 pm in the evening. If you are a loner or wanderers who want a good experience you can visit the library. There is no entry fee for the visitors.

Laibrary is good location also needs some improvement like setting, wifi, washroom, and any other timings also increase and books facilities also increase in this laibrary no particular space available for student a proper setting also be provided. Because location is very good and any students office employees are come so I request to. Educational institutions. Remove all problems

The library still has the old world charm.with elegant study chairs and sturdy tables and boasts of the oldest collection of books

I did not see much new hard case books but the old oakwood smelling books that l love whenever i visited while studying in college there

In the days of smart phones and AI, there is no dearth of book lovers and book clubs Shimla and thank Heavens for that

State library, Shimla on the Ridge is one of the masterpiece of architecture of the ages. Its location is its uniqueness. The ridge.though the entry is restricted only for the membership holders which probably would be the local people of Shimla.but reading in the library amidst the hills of Shimla, the ridge is in itself a mesmerizing experience.

I go to this library every day to study, this building is from Bertishers time, this building used to be their health center

If I talk about architecture, then It'll get all bumper points. It seemed like had just been constructed. Maintanence, Cleanliness, Organised, all on point.
And here tourists is not allowed, only which is the considerable disclaimer.

On the ride above the mall. It’s a flat area where people and tourist come together and it’s a place where all ceremonies and rallies of Shimla take place. There is a road to lakda Bazzar and on other side is scandal point. With beautiful snow capped mountains available and just behind library is road to Jakhu Temple.

It is beautifully located on Mall road. The environment around library is joyous and beautiful
