Tabo Monastery

Spent too little time at this beautiful place. The older monastery is just behind. The older monastery along with the one in Khochar are among the oldest monasteries tracing their origin to King Yeshe-Ö who ruled the region, covering Purang and Guge and Zanskar, Spiti and Lahaul and Upper Kinnaur around late 900AD. (pretty much meaning this region was with Tibet at some time) There are painting in the dark interior chambers of the old monastery (you will be given torches ; DO NOT USE MOBILES - You will be reprimanded by the monks). The painting some retain the old colour (they are 1000 yr old!). Sit meditate and ponder about life. Plenty of stay option around.

I came here first in 1996 when they were celebrating 1000 years of the monastery. Since then, a small non descript village has turned into a tourist town. It does not diminish the spiritual and religious importance of the place.

Tabo, a village in Spiti, altitude 10,760 feet. Cold all year round. But we didn't get cold. Oldest Buddhist monastery in India. It is called Ajanta of Himalayas. Mud walls have frescoes and paintings like Ajanta Caves. The monastery is made of clay. According to legend, it is thousands of years old.

Tabo Monastery is Very Beautiful and awesome. Very Calm place. But the lady staff who guides inside the Old Monastery behaved Very Rudely and she lectured arrogantly and insulted me by telling that I have 'No Commensense'. Who is she to judge & lecture and order me to use commensense'? I think she has No Commense at all - If so she should have guided me properly & told me what I have to do or not inside the monastery as I have came from outside the state of Himachal Pradesh and moreover I'm a Hindu from the South India and don't know what to do inside the monastery. If I made a mistake she should have corrected me politely. Do Buddhism
teach to behave rudely & arrogantly? Everyone visit Tabo Monastery to get peace and spiritual experience. But I lost the calm and spiritual mood I got from there just before the ignorant lady shouted at me. Very strange that the lady staff inside the monastery has no patience and she don't know how to behave to a visitor. Very sad that she spoiled my mood. May lord Buddha give me justice & I believe that I get it surely because I haven't made a mistake knowingly - The God is witness to it & knows all. Such arrogant staff should be kicked off from the monastery or the authority must teach her or conduct a training class regarding how to behave or tackle with a visitor. First learn how to behave, then do your duty politely. Because we are NOT your toys and coming there to hear your rude words. May lord Buddha forgive the ignorant lady. I doubt whether she knowingly insulted me as I'm a Hindu from South India. This review is my Painful experience inside the Tabo Monastery.

Unlike the other monasteries which are built on hills, Tabo monastery is sitting at the bottom of the valley, in the rocky desert of Tabo Valley.

The foundation of this primordial was laid in 996 A. D by the Buddhist king Yeshe O’d. That is the reason Tabo Monastery is one of the most popular historical sites in Lahaul and Spiti Valley. The walls of the monastery are covered by priceless paintings, statues, frescos and murals which do total justice to the alias name “Ajanta of Himalayas”. Since the time of fire apes, this monastery has safeguarded the culture, heritage, and traditions of Buddhism.

The Archaeological Survey of India looked after the monastery temple complex and has declared it as “National historic treasure” of India. Despite being a part of prehistoric times, the paintings in the monastery are still fresh as new, which is one of the biggest reasons for making a visit to this ancient monastery.

After being heavily damaged during the 1975 Kinnaur earthquake, this monastery was fully restored and Kalachakra Festival (a process of commencement and rejuvenation) was initiated by the 14th Dalai Lama in 1983 and 13 years since then the monastery celebrated the millennium of its existence. This rich history of the monastery makes it a “must visit” place.

Like any other monastery, this monastery is also beautiful. Once you go inside, you will find an old monastery in the campus through which you are allowed to get into the prayer hall and there's a guy who explains the detailed history about the deities and the wall carvings, idols and paintings.

Tabo is a beautiful place in the Sapiti valley. It's known for Buddhist monasteries. It's the oldest Buddhist monastery in Northern India.

The place is called "Ajanta of India". If you visit there, try taking to the locals they are very humble and sweet and will tell you about their culture.
Try carrying your own food as there are very less options of edibles.

Tabo monastery is on of the oldest and well maintained monasteries across the country. This village is situated at such a great place. It is on the table land between the valley. With huge landscape to the left.
To the right are the mountains. Villagers are also very kind. The hills have deep caves too. You can explore it and find out how the monks stayed here.

Best way to describe it is celibacy with nature. The barren mountains with the beautiful monestry makes a perfect place.toilets are not so clean. Many shops for buying stuffs like fridge magnet t shirts ear ring nose ring, photos, note books, which will make your journey memorable. Don't pick apples from the trees otherwise it will come very costly (fine of 500/-). Buy it from stores. They tastes the best. Happy journey

The monastery is known as "the Ajanta of the Himalayas" because of its frescoes and stucco paintings. The iconography of this period in the temples also supports the bond that existed between the two cultures of India and Tibet. There is a large and priceless collection of thankas (scroll paintings), manuscripts, well-preserved statues, frescos and extensive murals which cover almost every wall. While in the earlier period, paintings in the interior of the main Tabo temple and its stupas represented the Nyingmapa, Kadampa and Sakyapa traditions, the later period represent paintings of the Gelugpa tradition. In the independent small chambers of the monastery, there are many paintings on the walls. The frescoes seen inside the gompa are in a fragile state. Some are of a bright cobalt colour. Prior to the 1975 earthquake, there were 32 raised medallions on the walls of the temple hall, and an image placed in front of each of them.

It is a place just for a hault between nako and kaza. Don't expect good food and services here as it is a very remote area. Only for the tourists they have created it as a spot.

The Tabo monastery was founded in 996A. D.by the Tibetan Buddhist translator Rinchen Zangpo and is situated at the height of 10,007 feet above the sea level in the Lahaul and Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh and often referred to as Ajanta of Himalayas. Its one of the oldest Buddhist pilgrimage centre spread over 6300 sq.metres. The monastery comprises of nine temples and Gompas. Its famous for its murals and stucco sculptures carved on the walls. The monastery has several Thangkhas, murals and statues.

Tabo Monastery is consider to be one of the oldest Monastery in india and said to Ajanta of the Himalayas. Tabo monastery, a monastery functional from 10 century onwards and a mystical place in true sense. The moment you step inside you feel that energy, you feel that stillness and calmness. The experience that I had there cannot be described in words. Entering the main prayer/meditation hall it felt like entering a different dimension altogether, a dimension where i wasn't bound by my body or time for that matter. इसमें नौ मंदिर, 4 स्‍तूप और गुफा मंदिर हैं। प्राचीन समय में शिक्षा और विद्या के लिए टाबो मुख्‍य केंद्र हुआ करता था। वर्तमान मे टाबो तठ सरकोंग स्‍कूल द्वारा चलाया जाता है जिसमें 274 बच्‍चे पढ़ते हैं

The must have to visit destination in Spiti Valley. One of the oldest monasteries in the world. I have been there as a part of my all India ride in August. The climate and views are awesome. Very less people around and the silent surrounding s make you reborn. Stay there for one or two days and find yourself.

Tabo Monastery, also known as the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas, ' is one of the most popular monasteries in the Lahaul and Spiti Valley and was founded more than a millennium back in 996 A. D. This ancient structure stands on the barren, cold, and rocky desert of the Tabo valley at a dizzying height of 3050 meters above sea level. This untouched beauty has preserved the glorious heritage, traditions, and culture of Buddhism through the passage of centuries. According to the Tibetan Calendar, the Tabo Monastery is believed to have been established in the year of the Fire Ape, by a great teacher and translator Lotsawa Rinchen Tsang Po, the king of the western Himalayan Kingdom of Guge.

StructureA historic treasure of India and a heaven in its own right, the Tabo Gompa, or Buddhist monastery is second in importance only to the Tholing Gompa in Tibet. It was developed as an advanced centre for Buddhist learning and to preserve the Buddhist legacy. The monastery complex comprises 9 temples, 23 chortens, a monk's chamber, and an extension that houses the nun's chamber. Some temples in the complex are regarded as earlier construction, while another group belongs to a later period. The temples in the first group include The Temple of the Enlightened Gods, The Golden Temple, The Mystic Mandala Temple/Initiation Temple, The Bodhisattva Maitreya Temple, and The Temple of Dromton.

Those included in the second group are The Chamber of Picture Treasures, The Large Temple of Dromton, The Mahakala Vajra Bhairava Temple, and The White Temple. The monastery is located on a flat ground and spread over an area of 6300 Sq meters in Tabo village, which is about 46 kms from Kaza. The tourists can stay in Tabo village as it has many small hotels as well as home stays along with eating options that give tourists a more relaxing and comfortable stay.

The wall paintings and the life size mud figures are amazingly well-preserved. Monastry's employees and followers are welcoming and gracious and will happily answer any questions about the monastery and their faith and practices.

There are two monastery here. One is old and other is new. People here claim that this monastery is older than nako monastery. There is no light inside old one. All the wall paintings and statues are well preserved. You are not supposed to touch the wall paintings. The lama will hand over a torch to look around the monastery. You will feel the positivity in this place. It is a must visit. The new monastery is open every time but the old one is closed in the noon. Monastery also offer lodging. Not how and where to book from. When we visited, the rooms were full even though it was not the peak season.

I have been there twice and found the place very much intresting. There are plenty of caves of monks, they lived there and meditate in that. The monastery has 9 temples, 4 stupas, and 23 Cortes with monk hostels. A must visit place is spiti valley.
