A son of the Chalukya king Kirttivarman I, Pulakeshin overthrew his uncle Mangalesha to gain control of the throne. He suppressed a rebellion by Appayika and Govinda, and decisively defeated the Kadambas of Banavasi in the south. The Alupas and the Gangas of Talakadu recognized his suzerainty. He consolidated the Chalukya control over the western coast by subjugating the Mauryas of Konkana. His Aihole inscription also credits him with subjugating the Latas, the Malavas, and the Gurjaras in the north.

The most notable military achievement of Pulakeshin was his victory over the powerful northern emperor Harshavardhana, whose failure to conquer the Chalukya kingdom is attested by the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang. In the east, Pulakeshin subjugated the rulers of Dakshina Kosala and Kalinga. After defeating the Vishnukundina ruler, he appointed his brother Vishnu-vardhana as the governor of eastern Deccan; this brother later established the independent Eastern Chalukya dynasty of Vengi. Pulakeshin also achieved some successes against the Pallavas in the south, but was ultimately defeated during an invasion by the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I.

Pulakeshin was a Vaishnavite, but was tolerant of other faiths, including Shaivism, Buddhism, and Jainism. He patronized several scholars, including Ravikirtti, who composed his Aihole inscription.

I had been to this place around 6 years ago and now it feels totally different. It's one of the great historical monuments in India, and we as responsible citizens need to maintain it in the way it looks. Cleanliness is very much required at this place to keep it for the future generations to come and see its beauty. Roads are too narrow, the government needs to look into this matter seriously.

Good place visit with family. The four cave temples are carved into the steep cliff face, above a man-made lake called Agastya Theertha. The temples are carved into the monolithic stone face of the red sandstone cliff. The cave temples are connected by over 200 steps carved into the mountain. The interconnecting steps have intermediate terraces that overlook the town of Badami and the lake below. The temples in Caves 1 to 3 are dedicated to Hindu gods, whereas Cave 4 is dedicated to Mahavira, the founder of Jainism.

Excellent place. Nice sculptures. Preserved the heritage site very well. Too many monkeys and one has to be careful. Cleanliness can improve further.
Road from Hospet highway to Badami is very bad. If tourism has to improve in Karnataka, particularly in such heritage sites, roads are to be laid properly.

Advisable to hire an ASI guide. 2hrs is sufficient to explore the caves and appreciate the history behind the creation and it's current situation. Besides there Caves, you can view the beautiful Agastya lake and it's surroundings. Visit this place with sufficient time on your side, you will enjoy it. Tickets available at the entrance, best time to visit Oct to Feb. A word of caution - too many monkeys, don't carry any edibles or bags and stay calm.
16 अक्टूबर 2021 9:27
Good.
1. Good view.
2. Good parking.
3. Good road till badami

Not good.
1. Not so clean
2.25rs /per person is not ok for that maintenance.
3. No eatery shops
04 अक्टूबर 2021 2:50
It's a mind-blowing, humongous ancient historical structure made our of red stones. There's a coexistence of Hinduism and Islam (prayers still take place here) Some parts are a little ruined but still looks pretty amazing! There's a water body in between which adds more beauty to it. The view from the top is littt! There's a huge crowd in every corner, everytime. There are a lot of bold troublesome monkeys. Do lookout for them. There's a meusem on the other side. Entry fees is bare minimum. One would require a day to cover the place in detail. Only downside is the not so effective management and heavy traffic.

During our family tour to ‘Magical Hampi’ in Karnataka, while returning to home, on route we gave a visit to the world famous ‘Badami Caves’. Badami Caves are located in Badami town in which temples of Hindus and Jains exist. Badami caves were built by using sandstone available on the hills in the town. There are four caves in Badami out of which one, two, and three belong to Hindu deities while cave four belongs to Jains.
Cave 1 is carved with an attendant of Lord Shiva in different postures. Cave 2 can be reached through a beautiful staircase of carved stone. At the entrance, there is a veranda having four pillars. The cave has a figure of Lord Vishnu. Cave 3 is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is the largest cave among the four caves. There are six pillars that support this cave. Cave 4 is dedicated to the Tirthankaras of Jainism. The entrance of the cave has a veranda having five bays with square-shaped four columns.
This is an excellent example of Indian rock-cut architecture. All the caves are preserved well and maintained in good condition. This is a must visit place for those who love history and architecture. Best month to visit this beautiful place is in between October to January.
Four wheeler parking is available at this place; even you can park the bus here.

Founded by the Chalukyas, Badami in Karnataka is one destination in India that can steal one’s heart in fractions of second. The heart melting landscape accompanied by beautifully done temples and fort can easily draw the attention of the travellers from around the globe. You may compare this town to other ancient destinations in the country but let us assure you there is only one such place that completely nails the Karnataka tour and Badami is what it is called.
Dated back in 6th and 7th century AD, the Rock Cut Cave Temples are the main tourist attraction in Badami. Carved out of massive stone cliff, the cave temples are the best example of Chalukya architecture style. There are four cave temples in Badami and each shrine has intricate carvings, depicting the mythological events and religious teachings of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. Amongst the four caves, Cave Temple 1 is the oldest with carvings of Shiva. Cave Temple 2 is completely dedicated to Lord Vishnu who is worshipped in the form of the Preserver. Inside Cave Temple 3, Lord Vishnu can be seen in carved incarnations of Trivikrama and Narasimha and frescoes also depict the wedding of Shiva and Parvati. Cave Temple 4 on the other side is dedicated to Jainism, the cave has figurine of Tirthankara Parshavnatha and Mahavira is shown as sitting. These caves are an important pilgrimage in South India and thus are a must visit. The architecture style of Badami is such that was successful in inspiring the architecture of Vijaynagara Empire. The Rock Cut Caves found here is probably one of the most scenic structures in India. The inner halls of the caves have prolific sculptural symbolism; there is a fine balance of versatility and restrain in the caves. On the other hand stands the Bhutnatha Temple, which has the mix of Dravidian and Jain style architecture, intricate carvings and stone sculptures make the temples here look spectacular.

the Tandava-dancing Shiva as Nataraja outside of the cave.
Cave 2 and cave 3 are dedicated to lord Vishnu it is also the most complex carved cave.
Cave 4 is dedicated to Jainism.

Place is not clean. Due to dhobi's who live inside the premises. But a must watch for its beautiful stone carving architecture.

Beautiful group of 4 cave temples. Beautiful carvings synonymous with wooden construction can clearly be seen in the carved caves, such as the eaves. But the access to the caves as well as the Bhoothnath temples is bad. It's better to make the 900 m walk rather than taking a four wheeler.
10 फरवरी 2019 22:10
Nice place. Needs a bit of stairs climbing. The four cave temples and the hill itself are awesome. And the views from the top of the hill to the lake and the museum/temples in the side the lake are too good in the first light of the day
27 जनवरी 2019 20:52
Hoho you never get this type of superb atmosphere in india superb caves and nice atmosphere.
It's a cave temple complex of Jain, Hindu and Buddhist caves. They are carved into the stone directly and there are temples and room to offer prayer. The parking place is quite small. You need climb some. The carving is just breathtaking. The view is great and you can see the lake and the temples at the bank of the lake. It's UNESCO world heritage site, there were no translator that I saw. But to see the determination of the people back in those times were extraordinary.

Entry ticket -10/-
Worth and the best

Entrance to Badami caves, is very unhygienic, people wash clothes, there are pigs roaming around, it stinks, sanctity can be maintained better as we are paying entrance fees.

It is located in a ravine at the foot of a rugged, red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake. Badami has been selected as one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India.
