The Ballari Fort is also said to be the world's second largest monolithic hill in the world. Ballari Fort and the town which laps it are situated around two eminent granite hills which are rocky and huge. Ballari Gudda and Kumbara Gudda. These two hills are a perfect backdrop for the city, surrounded by smaller hills, including Eeshwana Gudda and Kaate Gudda. The fort provides a commanding position and a beautiful view of the plains, now the Bellary town. Granite rocks embrace the terrain surrounding the fort, which is in the shape of a mountain. The semi-elliptical shape of the hill is longer towards the North than the Southern side.

17th and 18th November: fort is closed for unknown period due to wild life (cheetah) sighting on the top.
22 जनवरी 2023 16:49
The Bellary fort looks magnificent from outside. Unfortunately the authorities are not allowing anyone to go beyond the first flight of stairs because of some leopard threat. There is nothing much to see if you cannot go to the top. I would suggest to wait till the fort is completely open to public.

An historical fort with huge corridors and walls just one kilometer away from the railway station. I just had views from the train. Its kept as an item in my wish list.
29 दिसंबर 2022 15:38
Very big place. But unfortunately some cheeta entered the premises. So they didn't allow visitors to upper fort.
26 दिसंबर 2022 7:30
Fort is closed since 10th Aug'22 stating that leopard is there on Fort
Keeping it close for 3 long months is definitely not good considering tourism. It should had resolved within a week only.

A fort with two layers, one which saw the rule of many dynasties, the last one being the feudatories of the Vijayanagara empire. The upper fort is the oldest one and the lower fort is said to have been constructed under HyderAli by a French Engineer. Located on two hillock of Ballari Gudda and Kumbar Gudda the fort is quite majestic.

Worst experience!
Even the local bellary people don't know the about the exact location of the so called 'bellary fort' specially those autorickshaw people.
And one more thing there no availability of online booking rides like Ola, Uber, Rapido.
Very very worst experience and worst development of city

08 जनवरी 2022 2:32
It's a wow place where it's a historical palace of Tipu sultan and its surveyed under various act and also there are certain huge fines imposed.

But the condition over there is pathetic and every where there is a lots of litters such as plastic bottles packets.ect.

To overcome come this I would like present a great suggestion where in you can add up stamp or receipt for ₹10 as a refundable amount where in if they bring back the bottle or packets. This i would like to bring back this kind implementation in this destination to safe guard the surrounding.

Good to visit either early morning or evenings you won't exposed to sun. There are maximum steps to climb except at some places. Places is totally covered by mountain to rocks and green vegetation.you will find the great history behind its construction and how they executed it strategically to tackle enemies. You can have a view covering whole bellari.it costs around 20 Rs for Indians and 300 Rs for foreigners. A wide stretched outer line with fort inside it. It is very peaceful in mornings to visit. There will be no food or water outlets at top, so carry or buy before starting.

Ballari Uphill fort or Bellary fort as it is also known by is the fort located in the city of Bellary in Karnataka. The fort is built in two parts- the lower fort and the upper fort. The fort was built by the Hanumappa Nayaka, who was the feudatory of the illustrated Vijayanagara Empire. The lower side of the fort was later on built by Hyder Ali late into the 18th century.

Hyder Ali took help of the French engineer who led the architecture and design of the fort and also helped in refurbishing the Upper fort of the Ballari. The lower side of the fort when completely constructed had a design alteration as the lower fort was at a lower height in comparison to other hills around which made the army positioned in the lower fort at a military disadvantage. Annoyed and buoyed by the design, Hyder Ali ordered the French architect to be hanged. The French architect’s grave is still found at the east gate of the fort.

The Bellary fort has a decorated history and harbors, historical and religious monuments alongside its premises. The fort also has a citadel on the upper part where many ancient tanks are housed while the lower fort has an arsenal of weapons. There are further many places inside worth reminiscent of the history and gives an outlook into how the yesteryear looked like. There is a temple dedicated to Hanuman in the lower fort known by as the Kote Anjaneya temple and also has a number of buildings like offices, church, educational institute, most of which were added when the British empire took command of the fort during the later part of British Raj. Bellary fort is easily accessible by road and by rails. One can easily reach there and see the historical fort for themselves.

One of the historical place in Bellamy town. The fort is carved out of closepet granite which one of the hardest stones found in this vicinity. The fort was stronghold of icons like Haider Ali and his son Tippu Sultan for longer period and subsequently captured by british.

Rock is like a mind. The rocks beauty will be enhanced when you carve it properly, but not when you scribble it.
Beauty lies in your perception

This the beauty and attraction of this town called Bellary. As you start walking uphill you will have to climb numerous steps and in between huge rocks. And the rocks have many love stories written on it by the local Romeos and Juliets. Its a huge fort built on a steep mountain. Once you reach the top you can see the whole town and this pond which have been there since years unknown. A must visit for the explorers and observers.
09 अप्रैल 2019 9:46
Fort is good only thing it has to be converted as tourism place government has to take necessary step in order to increase its facilities and so on
30 मार्च 2019 21:03
Must visit if you are in Bellary. Decently maintained fort with a history connecting the Vijayanagara empire and Hyder Ali/Tippu Sultan. It is a good trek uphill on the steps and atop you will get a bird's eye view of Bellary with its streets, distant reservoirs etc.roughly takes a couple of hours to explore both the lower and upper fort and walk through the fort ramparts. Entry fee is basic (a couple of tens) and natural parking available at the entrance (no shade guaranteed, though)
22 मार्च 2019 15:08
Good place to hangout with friends
Such a historical place which is not taken care properly by authorities.
No parking structure
No washroom
But they collect the entry fee
And entry is restricted timings 8.30-5.30
Good place for photoshoot

Ballari Hill fort with Indian Tricolor painted on one of it's ramparts is signature monument of BELLARY.
It's uniqueness is, entire Hill is a single monolithic rock which is also second largest rock in the world.
The Fort over the hill is strategically built with three tire security.
Fort is broadly divided in two parts
Upper fort built by Hanumappa Nayak, a palegar of Vijaynagar empire and
Lower fort built by Mysore ruler Hyder Ali. Lower fort has two gates East Gate & West Gate. Situated in the heart of city, it is quite close to both railway station & Bus Stand.
Presently Fort is under the control of Archeological Survey of India and a Ticket of RS 25/- being charged per adult. Unfortunately no facilities are being provided against the charge being collected.
No Toilets, No Drinking Water or any facility center.
In spite of all odds, it's a worth trek.
Although there are security gaurd at entrance, but neither on way nor on top, so it's better to trek in groups if there are female companions. Also it's a tiring trek so do carry sufficient water as there are no sources on way or above. If you are carrying snacks or food, please get wrappers and other plastic waste down as there is no cleaning facility.
BELLARY is a Hot city better start your trek early

The fort and the town are located around two prominent and large rocky granite hills: the Ballari Gudda and Kumbara Gudda The two hills provide the dominant backdrop to the city, and can be seen from all parts of the city. Apart from these two hills, there are smaller hills such as the Kaate Gudda the Eeshwara Gudda one hill adjacent to the St. John's High School in the Fort Area and another hill near to the Bellary Central Jail. The fort located on the Ballari Gudda, on a spur of the Sandur range at the border of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh has abundant granite outcrops. There is hardly any vegetation on the barren rocky country side. The fort has a commanding view of the plains that form the present day Bellary town.

The Bellary Fort  ("Bellary Kote") was built on top of a hill called the "Ballari Gudda" or the Fort Hill. It is situated in the historic city of Bellary, in the Bellary district, in Karnataka state, India. It was built in two parts namely, the Upper Fort and the Lower Fort. The Upper Fort was built by Hanumappa Nayaka, a feudatory of Vijayanagara Empire, but the Lower Fort was built by Hyder Ali in later part of the 18th century.

A French engineer was the architect and builder of the Lower Fort. He refurbished the Upper Fort also. After the forts were completed, Haider Ali found that the forts built were at a lower elevation vis-a-vis an opposite hill called the 'Kumbara Gudda', thus putting the new forts militarily at a strategic disadvantage. As a result, Haider Ali was annoyed with this lapse and it is said that he ordered hanging of the French engineer at the east gate of the fort. The French engineer's grave, dated 1769 (inscribed as unknown French Engineer), is located at the east gate of the fort and has been preserved due to efforts of local Muslims who also claim that it was the tomb that belonged to a Muslim saint.

The forts have fine ramparts with a rich history with several historical and religious monuments. A citadel was in the upper fort with several ancient tanks while the lower fort on the east housed the arsenal

Bellary Fort:
It is advisable to visit the Fort early in the morning even in Winter season to avoid the heat generated by the barren rock & boulders to enjoy your trek with pleasure. The scenery of the city around, apart from majesty of the fort, is very beautiful- a photographer with zoom lens will have to spend the whole day on the hill to capture each location in addition to each part of the Fort & ponds, fortification etc.
This is a First class Fort, built during Vijayanagara times by Hanumappa Nayaka round the hill top of the Bellary Gudda or the Fort Hill. Hyder Ali, who took possession of the Fort from the Nayaka family in 1769, got the fort renovated and modified with Legend, a French Engineer who was later hanged, for overlooking the fact that the neighbouring Kumbara Gudda is taller than Ballari Gudda and buried near the East Gate
The fort is called as the Upper Fort with polygonal walled building with a citadel on the summit of the rock at 1976 feet It has three outer lines of fortification, one below the othercontaining several cisterns, excavated in the rock.
There is only one way to reach the fort, in a winding rocky path amongst the boulders. There is a small temple, outside the citadel and are the remains of some cellar rooms and several deep pools of water. There are also reservoirs in the clefts of the rocks.
The Lower fort for Military Personnels, is at base about half a mile in diameter.

Truely. Great experience. This place is not in limelight. But seriously one of the best place in my Hampi Trip
28 फरवरी 2018 23:34
The most prominent structure in Ballari, one can not miss it's presence as it literally looks over the entire city. It is a massive fort with multiple bastions and rounds of fortifications. One realizes the scale of the fort only on reaching the top. Initially built by Nayaka chieftains and then expanded by Hyder Ali one can spend a long time just strolling around and taking in the Stark beauty. The climb in itself does not take long, though for those with health issues it may prove difficult. Altogether probably about 100 to 200 steps perhaps.
There is a Sati Temple at the top. Also present are multiple water bodies which would have played an important role during sieges given the unforgiving climate of the place. One of the water bodies apparently has multi colored water, however I could not find it, perhaps it would be visible in the monsoons. One gets to have great views of Ballari city from here.
Numerous features of a medeival fort are intact here. It can be developed into a great attraction for Indian and foreign visitors alike if maintained well and with appropriate information being highlighted at important spots. During non peak days security of visitors is also a concern. The proximity to Hampi should ideally make this vast fort a tourist magnet. Sadly the potential is not capitalized fully. I descended the steps hoping for better days for the fort.
Nonetheless definitely worth visiting.

Must place to visit in Bellary. Start early in the morning to avoid hot sun (around 7-7.30am). You can have more fun if you go in a group and also to avoid unnecessary risks.
13 फरवरी 2018 14:03
One of the most important tourist place in Bellary. This place is very clean and well maintained. Crowded on weekends and public holidays. Ticket price 15 rupees per head and no extra charge for camera.
This is present in the top of a mountain. From the top of the fort you will have view of Bellary town. Before climbing just make sure that you have at least 1 bottle of water and other food items. And avoid sunny days. Only one way is there. Another important thing is that it will close at 5 pm.
Nice place for photography, and for trekking.
