Best Temple located in the banks of agastya lake. You can see this temple from badami caves -4. Beautifull view you will get from there. The way here is a little tricky, you need to go through the local people homes here to get there. Ask the small boys playing over there, they will take you for 10rs over there. ENJOY!

One of the most brilliantly photogenic spots of Badami is the cluster of temples called The Bhutanatha Group. Situated at the base of a long wall of sandstone mountain, on a promontary by the expansive lake called Agasthya Tirtha. These temples date from 7th Century to 12th century and show various archictural styles. Just behind the group of structural temples is a series of rock cut bas relief images of deities on a boulder.
With blue water rippling in the full tank (and the occassional thin water fall on the cliff during rains), the Bhutanatha Group offers a really mesmerising visual treat.

(The very narrow road leading to the Museum Area, from where the path to Agasthya Tirtha starts, is in very bad shape. It is hoped, the local administration takes up work on it seriously.)

It is very small and difficult to reach

Lovely place in the badami. Visit in the evening and take a rest on the steps of the lake watching a beautiful sunset and light falling on bhoothnath gudi. That evening was the best time of our badami trip

Along the Agastya lake.one can use car or taxi to reach the nearest place instead of walking all the way beside Lake to reach here.

At a distance of 1.5 km from Badami Bus Station, Boothanatha Temple is a magnificent structure situated on the banks of Agasthya Lake past Badami Museum in Badami.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Boothanatha Temple is the most striking structure of Badami and prime promotional element of Badami Tourism. The temple is surrounded by water on three sides. The temple was constructed in the early 8th century by Chalukyas. Constructed in Dravidian style, the temple is emerged into the Agastya Lake and becomes inaccessible during peak monsoons when the water level in the lake reaches the full capacity. The temple has a pillared mukha mandapa, sabha mandapa, and inner sanctum with a Shiva image. The main temple is accompanied by several small shrines on the northern and eastern ends.

The form of Bhoothnath is said to be the combination of the God of Soul, Spirit, and the Ghost. The temple all dark inside has an image of Shiva in an angry form. The Bhoothnath monuments constitute the early modes and phases of South Indian temple architecture.

When you walk further south from Boothanatha Temple, there are few more striking monuments carved into the hillock. The first one is a bas-relief of Lord Narasimha, Varaha, Durga, Ganesha, Trimurthies along with several gods carved out from the hill. Further south from here towards the lake has a small stone structure with a wonderfully carved image of Lord Vishnu in sleeping posture. The main carving is executed on a huge rock.

Timings: 6 AM - 7 PM

Nice and quite place. There are meditation rooms in temple. Only drawback is the route for going there is not so easy. You cannot take your car over there as roads are narrow you need to take a auto from badami cave parking. I wish there would be a mini boat from badami cave to bhootnath temple as there is small beautiful lake.
29 अगस्त 2022 7:21
A perfect serene place for a one day trip.
Do not forget to visit the museum just besides it.
The lake is beautiful.
The closing time is 6 pm of this temple.
Please note - There is a small lane to go to this temple, so please do not go in SUV'S or SEDAN cars, as you cannot surpass.

Bhutanatha temple complex at Badami, 7th century, with the open hall (11th century) extending to the Agasthya tirtha (lake).
Situated next in the mid of nature, sculpture and carvings on the stones are fabulous. BADAMI was ruled by Chalukya dynasty.
One must visit this place when you are in Badami. One of the unesco recognized heritage place.

Continuation of the Badami cave complex. Beautiful temples situated on the far corner of the lake and looking out to the caves. Go at sunset and wander around the complex. Need at least 2 hrs. Monkey menace is not present at this place.

During our family tour to ‘Magical Hampi’ in Karnataka, while returning to home, on route we gave a visit to the ‘Bhootnath Temple’. It is located in Badami town and is a group of temples. It is a cluster of sandstone shrines dedicated to the deity Bhutanatha or Lord Shiva. This location is famous for its amazing views and rock climbing activities.

Masterpiece of the Early Chalukya artisans from the 6th century. Perfect cylinders in stone using just hammer and chisel. Beautiful temple by the lakeside with the tall red sandstone hills acting as the perfect backdrop.

Very nice place, visit during sunset to enjoy the nature. Parking is available but road is very narrow and lot of hump on them which may scratch your cars, SUVs. Better to walk or trek or by auto to reach this place.

Bhootnath temple is one of the most beautiful sandstone temples I have ever seen. The temple is situated near Badami cave temples in Agastya lake. The way to Badami caves and temple is hardly 10 to 15 minutes by walking.
The carvings of the temple and the temple surrounded area are way beautiful.

The Bhutanatha group of temples is a cluster of sandstone shrines dedicated to the deity Bhutanatha, in Badami town of Karnataka state, India. There are two major temples here. Temple No. 1, on the east side of the lake, called the Bhutanatha temple has a superstructure that resembles early South Indian style or North Indian style with its open mantapa extending into the lake, while the smaller Temple No. 2 on the north-east side of the lake, sometimes called the Mallikarjuna group of temples, has a stepped superstructure, commonly found in Kalyani Chalukya constructions. The inner shrine and mantapa of Temple No. 1 were constructed in the late 7th century, during the reign of the Badami Chalukyas. While the outer mantapa, facing the Badami tank, was completed during the rule of the Kalyani Chalukyas of the 11th century. Hence the Bhutanatha temple contain architectural forms from different periods. Studies show that these Kalyani Chalukya architects could have belonged to the same early phase workshop, that later built the nearby Yellamma temple and the Mallikarjuna group of temples.

This the most beautiful temple for photography. Architecture is very grand with many incomplete cave temples in this complex. Majority of the sculpture in the temples of this complex is dead though we may feel good part here and there.landscape view of complete red colour mountains and silent lake below it along with colours of sunset is best from here.

This is a very scenic location in Badami, this temple is located on the shores of a lake. You can sit on the shores and stare at the lake peacefully. You can also see the mountain where the 6 cave temples are made.

Bhootanath temple is the landmark of Badami town. It is on one end of Agasthya lake and looks like floating on the water. The temple looks beautiful. The temple along with the lake is scenic. It is a very popular tourist destination in Badami attracting domestic and foreign tourists everyday. We have to take an auto rickshaw from Badami and the roads are not proper. Be decently dressed in temple premises. Approximately it will take one hour to explore the temple sorroundings. There are two other temples in the complex. Entry is free. There is a museum near by. A wonderful place to see.

The Bhootnath Temple is another major attraction of Badami, situated on the eastern shore of the Agastya Lake, across from the Cave Temples. One can get a bird’s eye view of the cluster of these temples from the hill where the caves are located, and the view is indeed beautiful.
To get closer to the temple, however, we had to walk through a maze of narrow lanes of Badami town, after parking our car somewhere near the main road. One can also take a rickshaw to the temples, but it would be almost impossible to take your car up close, unless it is a Mini or a Nano. There is a Shiva linga inside and a Nandi bull in front. On one side of the doorway is stands Goddess Ganga and on the other side is Yamuna.
The temple is built in sandstone by the Chalukya rulers of Badami, around the 7th century.

In the inner hall of the Bhutanatha temple, a heavy architrave above the columns divides the hall into a central nave and two aisles. The pillars are massive and the bays in the ceiling of the nave is decorated with lotus rosette. Perforated windows bring dim light into the inner mantapa. On either side of the foot of the shrine doorway is an image of goddess Ganga on her vehicle, the makara, on the right, and on the left, that of goddesses Yamuna riding the tortoise. There is no dedicatory block upon the lintel to indicate to which deity the initial dedication was for. The Shiva linga in the shrine appears to be a later addition after the original deity in the sanctum was removed.
The temple is unfinished and at the base of the superstructure (Shikhara), are vestiges of Jain architecture. The image niches on the wall of the shrine and the hall are now empty though some decorative elements like makharas (mythical beast) with long tails still remain. To the north of the hall is a small shrine which was originally consecrated for Vishnu. Following later Jain modifications, the temple was eventually taken over by the followers of Lingayatism who built an outer hall and installed a Nandi (vehicle of Shiva) and a Shiva linga inside the sanctum.

It's a walkable distance from the museum.
Be careful with the slippery steps. Avoid visiting the place in the sunny hours. 4-6 is the best time to visit the place

Very clean and well maintained site. No admission fee. Most of time of the year there is no water near temple. All photos are taken in full monsoon season. No food available and keep water bottles as it is open area. There is always one guard at complex. Government should take care of maintained aproach road.

It is a must go place if you are in awe of the Historical temples and Cave monuments.
It is a serene place surrounded by the lake, there is also an archaeological museum just beside the bhootnath temple. On the other side of the lake are Badami caves which are also worth a gape. These all monuments are within walkable distance. All these monuments are well maintained and clean. All in all the Temple and monuments are worth a visit.

It's beauty!

It's huge temple complex, and temples are carved out of stones. You'll simply love the natural colour shades.

Apart from series of temples another attraction is a nearby museum.
Recommended time is morning and evening, you'll avoid soaring Sun and also you'll love cool breeze.

This place is visible from Badami Cave Temple.

Architectural marvels of Badami Chalukyas

The Badami Chalukya period (6th - 8th Century AD) was an important period in the development of South Indian Architecture. Chalukyas developed the Chalukya or the Vesara style of temple architecture that reached culmination under the Rashtrakutas and the Hoysalas. The Chalukya style was a unique blend of the northern Nagara and the Dravidian styles.

The temples of the Badami Chalukyas can be divided into two stages. The first was represented by the early structural and rock cut temples at Aihole and Badami. The Ladkhan Temple, is a flat roofed temple dedicated to Shiva. It is one of the oldest temple in Aihole. The temple consists of garbha griha with mandapa in front of it consisting of 12 carved pillars. The walls have floral patterns on them and the windows have lattice work done in the northern style. The Durga temple was an experiment seeking to adopt the Buddhist Chaitya style into a Brahmanical Temple. It reverentially displays gods and goddesses from Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Shaktism traditions of Hinduism. There are life-size statues of Shiva, Vishnu, Harihara (half Shiva, half Vishnu), Durga in her Mahishasuramardini form killing the buffalo demon, goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, Brahma, Surya, avatars of Vishnu such as Varaha and Narasimha. The Meguti Jain Temple shows some progress towards the construction of Structural temples but is unfinished.

Three rock cut cave temples were built at Aihole -one each in Brahmanical, Buddhist and Jain style. Later the Chalukyas refined their style and built four marvellous rock cut temples at Badami - one Jain and three Brahmanical. These temples consist of a rectangular pillared verandah, a square pillared hall with a small shrine cell at the back. Excavated in an axial plane, they have flat roofs like the mandapa type temples. Wide entrances, tall pillars with cushion type capitals supporting the roof and overhanging eaves are the main features of these cave temples. Another noteworthy feature is the running frieze of Ganas in various postures carved in relief on each plinth.

The Second stage of Chalukya Temple architecture is represented by the structural temples at Pattadakal. They are the finest specimens of the Chalukya art. Of the ten temples in Pattadakal, six are in Dravidian style and four in Rekhanagara style. The largest temple and the most magnificent temple at Pattadakal is the Virupaksha Temple, whose complex encloses 30 sub shrines and a large Nadi mandapa. This was also earliest example of Shiva temples, which have a Nandi pavilion in front of the temple. The Virupaksha temple in many ways holds resemblance to the Kailasanatha temple in Kanchipuram. It consists of a high vimana, mandaps and smaller shrines around the courtyard enclosed by a wall. The front and rear walls have large gopura entrances. The smaller shrines are two-storeyed and have vaulted halls. The main square structure has a tall four-storeyed vimana. The mandapa pillars are richly sculptured. The temples at Pattadakal represent both the Northern and Southern style of architecture.

(Visited in June 2019) - This is an Early Chalukyan temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on the banks of Agasthya Lake. One has to walk from the cave temples to visit this - there is another road from Fort. This simple Sandstone cluster of shrines have a kind of dark, Ancient appeal about them. Very peaceful. Surrounded by reddish hills of Badami, watching monkeys graze on the almost dried Agasthya Lake - Sat here for a few minutes! Speechless.

Thuis temple is located at one side of Agastya lake. You will have to walk from cave temples beside the lake. Well maintained. No entry fee. Might look more beautiful when the lake is full to its capacity.

Could really feel the vibes of the ancient people who built it. The material is all original and seems unaltered in modern times. Feels amazing and calm in this place. Extremely calm especially if u come in mid afternoon

Just that there is not much available to read about it.
