Its an interesting structure if you are a history buff. Though not as grand in appearance as compared to some of the other sites in Hampi such as Vitthala Temple or Virupaksha Temple or Hazararama Temple.

It has 11 chambers with domes to house the 11 best elephants that the kings would use for ceremonial purposes. Yhe interiors of each chamber has interesting stories which can be best explained by a guide. The architecture is also quite different from other Hampi structures and is what is called as Indo-Islamic.

The visit will not take more than an hour. Best combined with a visit to Zenana Enclosure and Hazarama Temple. Relatively less crowded as compared to other attractions.

The Elephant Stable in Hampi is an impressive structure that was used to provide shelter for the royal elephants of the Vijayanagara Empire. The elephant stable is located in the area that lies just outside the Zenana Enclosure.

It is one of the very few structures that have not suffered extensive damage during the Mughal attack on Hampi that led to the downfall of the Vijayanagara Empire in 1565 A. D.

It was built to house the king's royal palaces and consisted of eleven rooms. From one room to another, there are small doors between them, and the vaulted building is still intact. Constructed of stone and stucco, the top of the building is spherical.

There is a building to the north of the yard, which is called the guards' lodge, but it does not look like a house because the lobby is round and the porch is closed, with the rows of columns. Get out of here and go to Chandrasekhar's hut you will find a hut of Vishnu, known as the Saraswati Temple.

Before this there is the octagon bathroom.

If you see the Mahanavami heading towards Kamalapuram through the mound, there are queens bathrooms close to road.

One among the few least destroyed structures in Hampi Elephant Stable is a major tourist attraction. This long building with a row of domed chambers was used to ‘park’ the royal elephants.
There are 11 domed tall chambers some of them are inter- connected. The center one is specially decorated and big. Probably the musicians and the associated band troupes had been using this during ceremonies involving elephant processions. The whole building looks symmetric with respect to this central hall. The tower of the central hall resembles (though mostly destroyed) more like that of temples. However the five pairs of domes on either side are of Islamic in style. They are better preserved and of alternating patterns.
Metal hooks (used to tie the elephants) on the inside roof can be seen. At the rear of each hall are small manhole type openings for the mahouts to enter the elephant compartments. You reach here through the Zenana Enclosure. From here you proceed to the Guard’s Quarters and then may be to the Ranga Temple located a bit south of it all.

Elephant staple in Hampi shows how caring the rulers are for the animals. It also shows how many elephants they had. It's located at the banks of Tungabadhra so that animals can be cared properly. The building stands even today without any damage, which means how the strength is ensured. It's amazing to note that how they design such structures to handle such huge animals such as elephant. I was really amazed.

A great exhibit of the grand architecture and the secular construction of the Vijayanagara empire. Just like Lotus Mahal this monument has a combination of both Hindu and Muslim architectural constructs. There are 11 arches which act as elephants stables.

It is one of the very few structures that have not suffered extensive damage during the Mughal attack on Hampi that led to the downfall of the Vijayanagara Empire in 1565 A. D.

The ancient stable is a major attraction among the tourists even today. The elephant stable was constructed in the 15th century, during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire. As the name indicates, the stable was constructed to house the royal elephants of the Vijayanagara Empire.

The elaborate structure indicates the importance attached to the royal elephants during those days. It also suggests towards the amazing craftsmanship of the artisans of that era.

The elephant stable in Hampi is one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic style of architecture. Though most of the structures and monuments in Hampi were built using the Vijayanagara style of architecture, a few structures display the Indo-Islamic style as well.

The elephant stable is a prominent building in Hampi that displays this beautiful architectural style.

The elephant stable is a long building with a rectangular shape. The building has a row of eleven huge domed chambers. Each chamber is large enough to accommodate two elephants at a time. The domed chambers are interconnected with large arched openings.

The walls between the arches have small doorways. There is no sign to indicate that the chambers ever had any doors in the doorways.

Architecture of Elephant Stables

One of the last few structures which were destroyed in Hampi were the Elephant Stable, which is a major tourist attraction. This is a long structure with a row of domed chambers which were used to keep royal elephants. There are in all 11 doomed chambers of which some are inter connected. The center chamber is specially decorated and quite huge. Probably the musicians and associated band troupes had been using this during ceremonies involved in the processions of elephants.

The building as such looks symmetrical with respect to the central hall. The tower of the central hall looks like the temple shrines though most of it is destroyed. The five pair of domes which have remained intact are of the Islamic style they are better preserved. Metal hooks which are used to tie the elephants on the inside roof can be seen. At the rear of each hall are small manholes type openings for the mahouts to enter the elephant  compartments. Elephant Stables can be reached through the Zenana Enclosure, proceed to the Guard’s Quarters and move to the Ranga Temple located  a bit south of it all.

Multiple Use of Place

The Elephant Stable is a wonderful example of Indo-Islamic architecture  made from brick and mortar. The building is of great heights covered individually by the domes of various shapes and a building near it to lodge the workers. Together they form a “L” shaped structure, which is a part of the parade for ceremonies. During the best and high times of Vijayanagar Empire had about 10,000 elephants of which only 10 of them were chosen for royal service and kept in the stables. They are the best among the animals.

A set of large stables are part of the ceremonial royal elephants of the royal household. The area in front of them was a parade ground for the elephants and troops. This is another structure that portrays the Islamic style of building. The guards barracks are located next to the elephant stables. Elephant stables are on the east of the famous Lotus Mahal. Each of the dome has a large chamber with a painted ceiling. The interiors are left-right symmetrical from the central entrance. Elephants have always been  termed as royal animals used by the kings and princes to fight and show on as wealth and assets of the kingdom. In Vijayanagar Empire the rich and wealthy were in good number, to take care of their elephants they needed a proper place, which was suffixed by the elephant stables.

It is nice to take photos but there isn't much to see inside, just empty stone stables where the elephants were kept hundreds of years ago. Still, it is nice to see the architecture!

A part of the lotus mahal enclosure. Well maintained structures gives you an idea of the quality of life way back in those days and the importance of these beautiful beasts. Probably because of their undisputable importance in the life of the royals back in those days, a significant amount of sculptures and patterns on the rocks potray elephant figurines! Well looks like they were well cared for.:)

As the name suggests, this place was used by the Vijayanagara emperors to rear elephants. The sheer size and the numbers will keep you spell bound. On entering the stable you will notice that the place is very cool relative to the open area around. There are small openings interconnecting each stable for the movement of the mahout/ stable keeper. We can see that the builders have taken great effort to create a structure that is worthy of human living, even though meant for elephants.

It's just a stable with wide area where Kings can keep a dozen of mighty animals. It doesn't look like a ruin, I feel they maintained this place time to time, so that these huge collection can fight with time's bite. You can't find much things to do with here. 3 stars good for that.
