The museum is closed for reconstruction, which apparently will not be quick. Several fine statues remain in the courtyard. Plus the building itself is in the style of the beginning of the last century. Plus a very nice area and a park next door. Contemporary art galleries will also provide plenty of comfort. One - MAP - right across the road. The second - Gallery G - 200 meters from the first.

The main government museum with a good collection of items. Not much rush as now a day people are not interested in the history of the country that much. Visited here with my family and my children appreciated it. The car parking could be an issue on busy days, we were able to find the parking just in front of the museum on the road. If you have time visit the nearby Vishwesharayya Tech Museum which is one of the best. Some 20rs collected as entry fee. You are free to take pictures inside.

It is located at Kasturba road, Cubbon park, Gandhi Nagar. The museum has lots of collections like Ancient coins, painting, beautiful stones, sculptures, textiles, various instruments, jewelry, temple remnants etc. It has to be appreciated that the Government is still keeping all those for generations. The entrance fee is just 20 rs.
12 जनवरी 2023 15:55
Sad plight, have to maintain the building, saw water leaking in the building where paintings were mounted, no proper lighting. Since the government funds this, make sure you keep up the facility.
07 जनवरी 2023 2:29
Good collection of sculpturs of 10,11 centuries. Apart from that tools, weapons, potteries of that time etc
05 जनवरी 2023 20:11
Great place to visit for both children and adults is located at MG road. It's just next to the VITM (another nice place to visit). Houses both the department of archaeology and the art gallery. The museum has a lot of artifacts, ancient items. The entry ticket is also very reasonable it's just 20 rupees. Parking space is available.

It is good. Paid parking is available. There are two museums at the same location - (I) Government museum for historical items. (ii) Vishweshwaraiya Industrial & Technological museum for science loving people & students. There is no crowd at government museum and tickets can be bought in cash on the spot. There is some crowd at Vishweshwaraiya museum but online booking can be done on the spot and also security personnel guides for online booking.

Amazing collection of artefacts in very poor condition of upkeep. The display cases are old and not proper. The items are priceless and are almost unkept. There is bad odour and mould in the cases. I am just hoping these pieces are not damaged by the conditions they are kept in. The staff don’t care and it’s a treasure trove going down the drain. I am sure they don’t have the adequate resources to ensure the items are displayed properly when you compare it to Mumbai museums these are just so shabby feel sad of them.
03 अगस्त 2022 1:46
Has very ancient artifacts, some of them dating to older than 3000 bce. If you're a history enthusiast, this is a very good place. You can find ancient sculptures, inscriptions, ancient civilizationsl tools, weapons, pots, etc.
There are 2 floors here, usually less crowded. The ticket cost is also cheap, 40.per adult. It is located right next to the vishweshwarayya museum and ub City in the view. The place is easily accessible by bus routes and auto. Good place to spend for 1 or 2 hours

Reputed to be one of the oldest museums in the country, the Government Museum is a remarkable treasure trove of archaeological items such as stone carvings, pottery, paintings, coins and inscriptions.

A prominent attraction in this museum is the first ever recorded Kannada inscription – the Halmidi inscription (450 AD) and Atakur inscription (949 AD) slabs.

Government Museum, Bangalore is open from 10 AM till 5 PM on all days except Mondays.
11 जून 2022 7:28
Unfortunate to see this place not get as much attention as the technological museum. There are some amazing archaeological artefacts right from 4000 BC to 1800 AD.
However, some of the artefacts need better cataloging.
19 नवंबर 2021 13:39
Museum is good, but staff is rude. They were not ready to open the gate of outer courtyard where statues are kept. Soo irresponsible.
28 अक्टूबर 2021 6:57
The Government Museum in Bangalore is a must visit not just for tourists, but also local Bangaloreans.

The museum was built in 1865 and like State Central Library, is a Pompeian Red stone building.

The artefacts there date back many centuries. Don’t miss out on the hero stone at the entrance of the museum.

Would definitely help if there was a guide of sorts at the museum.
26 अक्टूबर 2021 16:21
This museum has an entrance fee ₹20, of course every single penny worth it because here we can see the old monuments which belongs several dynasties like hoysala, Ganga, kadamba, vijayanagara, Cholas and Mysuru etc. Also we get to see the old precious sculptures and paintings of goddess. Tourists and every bangalorian must visit to this museum for at least one time.
14 अक्टूबर 2021 0:36
This place has an entrance fee of ₹20 per person but every penny worth it
We get to see so many old artifact's that belongs to vijayanagar kingdom, Hoysala dynasty and many old relics from the past which signifies the glory of the kingdoms which ruled karnataka and surrounding past

Anyone interested in History will love this place. It houses artefacts belonging to the Chola and Ganga dynasties all the way back to megalithic and neolithic ages. There are three main sections here, viz the Antiquities section, Sculpture Section and Paintings section. The last one also has an assortment of musical instruments that were used in ancient courts and palaces. Every piece inside this museum is so carefully stored within glass vaults and well preserved. I only wish they did something about the inscriptions and sculptures outside the museum, because they are completely exposed to the elements and have no protection whatsoever.
15 सितंबर 2021 21:47
A very good historic museum situated off MG road. It's just next to the VITM (another nice place to visit). The museum has a lot of artifacts, though some of them have very generic names like bricks, bow and arrow etc.rather than something more specific. Tickets are priced very reasonably too.

The Government Museum in the city of Bangalore is a storehouse of rich historical and cultural significance. Located at the Kasturba Gandhi road.one of the oldest museums in the country is a remarkable treasure trove of archaeological items. The entire premises has well defined boundaries and there's entry fee. The entrance /exit points are well secured. Frequency of dustbins and seaters is low. There's no facility for washrooms or drinking water supply in around this place. The entire premises is under CCTV surveillance and has been regularly maintained. Worth visiting. Don't miss back side of this museum. Amazing collection of rare, historical artefacts, though they were not preserved behind physical barriers like glass or railing, that may call for potential vandalism. Talking about accessibility it's quite challenging for disabled to get inside the building as there's no ramp at the entrance. There's no railings either. The entrance portion has no seaters or shady place which is not good. There no restrictions with respect to age. Children should be under the guidance of any adult as most sculptures are not having a fixed support which might be dangerous. For people to access first floor there's only stairs which might be little hard for aged. But it's worth the visit and the ambience is quite calming and relaxing.

I have visited this place twice. Last Sunday I had a visit with my foreign friend, to let him know about our beautiful history. I hope he liked. Personally I too liked the collections here, but I would suggest if they can more details, more antiques, more historical things. I have been to many museums, the Chennai museum was really great. So here if the management can try for making it more informational and interesting. The building from outside is beautiful though.
21 मार्च 2021 8:26
It's a great place, there are two museums next to each other, the science and historic museum. This is the historic one.
The entry fee is ₹20 for adults and ₹10 for kids as on Feb 2021 and there is ample parking space.
It was a nice time to see so many ancient things, the sulptures and paintings etc. It's a must visit place if you enjoy historical museums.
03 मार्च 2021 20:47

There is a lot of historical things.

01 मार्च 2020 6:14
It is one of the must-visit places in Bangalore. Especially if you have interest in art and history. The entry fee is just ₹20. And Venkatappa Art Gallery is also included in it. The museum is a 2-storey building and has scriptures gallery and paintings gallery and weapons gallery.
23 फरवरी 2020 23:39
Just beside the Visvesvaraya museum it was more like a mini museum.unlike the huge museums this one had mostly the historical idols from some parts of India and majorly Karnataka which are rare and kept well in a nice building.can be visited once
30 जनवरी 2020 21:21
Given the low entrance fee, it's worth a visit if you're in the area. The collection of carvings and sculptures is interesting, as are some of the artifacts. However, it's not very large, and there's very little information provided about what the artifacts are, when they are from, or any other context.
15 जनवरी 2020 10:31
Government Museum established in 1865 by the Mysore State with the guidance of Surgeon Edward Balfour who founded the museum in Madras and supported by the Chief Commissioner of Mysore.

It is the best place for science. I got to know a lot of information from the museum. I think it is the best museum in Bangalore. The museum features inventions for science explorers. They also show how they work. It is a great experience for children as there is a special section for them.
26 नवंबर 2019 15:45
A nice museum, with some very impressive sculpture. Not the biggest collection but with a low entry fee it’s worth visiting.
18 नवंबर 2019 13:39
Not at all maintained. Antiques are getting spoiled here as they are placed in open sky, where they are getting wet by rain and rusted. Worst effort to conserve our riceh heritage of past.
12 नवंबर 2019 8:30
Good for educational purposes and good for childrens, lot of fun and lot of history you see there good place for every one
07 नवंबर 2019 0:14

11 अक्टूबर 2019 12:30
The museum houses a well maintained collection of weapons and other daily use objects in both clay and metal. It also has a collection of copper plates as old as 500c AD engraved with certain instructions. It has a large section dedicated to sculptures at the ground floor. On the first floor there are series of old painting, a few sculptures and musical instruments as well. There is also a garden within the premise of the museum that has a collection of sculptures in stones and the courtyards have sculptures and reliefs in stone as well. The museum also has a canteen outside serving refreshments.
19 सितंबर 2019 13:50
Great place for knowing what machines are. Nice collections of historical techs and Automotives. Great hub for scientific research.
04 सितंबर 2019 12:32
Stone arts from Ganga, hoysala dynasty covers 70% of the museum. The major attraction for history loving person like me is, "The Halmidi" inscription. The very first kannada inscription dates back to 4th century.

Out side the museum, there are few bunkers/tankers from worldwar 1 & 2.

Entry fee is 20 INR.
Paid Bike/ car parking is available
No canteen facility inside.
21 अगस्त 2019 18:49
A well maintained museum with artefacts from the Old Stone Age, Mohenjo Daro, and the South-Indian dynasties. You can also find the Halmidi inscription, the earliest kannada inscription discovered. The same ticket can be used to visit the Venkatappa art gallery right next to it. People with great interest in history might be disappointed with the short descriptions of the artefacts.
06 अगस्त 2019 8:37

It's now an archaeological museum with variety of collections of jewellery coins and inscriptions. We can reach here by public transport. It's well maintained and there is an entry fee to this place. It's so informative for the kids and it's a nice place for spending the leisure time with family. Altogether it's a good place to visit in bangalore.
22 जुलाई 2019 11:46
They have kept some amazing historical relics in this place including a field gun from Imperial German Army of Kaiser Wilhelm II
The building is very beautiful and is a relic of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysore, if you look closely at the entrance on the right hand side Mysore state museum is written on the top.
The beautiful model of the fort of Srirangapatna is worth seeing.
Dont forget to download the Pinakin audio guide App while visiting the place, as I got to know a lot from that guide and also learnt some of the unique stories of the sculptures kept there.

Also see the beautiful musical instruments on the second floor and do pause to see the beautiful paintings from Tanjore and Deccan.

Overall a nice museum in Bangalore.
