Halebid is one the important historical monument site, This place is situated near Hassan. One of the best Archaeological sites present in the state of Karnataka.
The sculptures are beautiful and maintained so well without any much of a damage.
The car parking is spacious and well maintained.
Care must taken during summers as the rocks absorb heat and it will be very very hot. Aged persons, differently abled and children may find it difficult during summers. Plenty of eateries are available outside and handicrafts as well.

Most beautiful and breathtaking sculptures, unbelievable details. Every sculpture is unique in it's own way, no two are alike.

Every inch is covered by art, hard to even imagine how were made so many years before the current technology. I don't think even with all the advance technology we have now we can replicate them.

The ancient capital of Hoysala’s was founded in the early 11th century & was known as Dwarasamudra, after a huge artificial lake of the same name, dating back to 9th century. The flourishing capital city had a small fortress with magnificent palace. It was fortified with a wall of enormous boulders and a moat that was connected with thelake. Halebeedu attained glorious heights duribg the reign of Ballala II, the grandson of Vishnuvardhana. The Hoysala empire extended from river kaveri in the west to Krishna in the east and was enriched by the fertile deltas of the rivers. It’s prosperity attractedthe forces of Delhi Sultanate, who invaded and annexed the town in 1311
Malik kafur, the Muslim general is said to have taken away camel-loads of jewellery, gold and silver from here.
In 1326, it was again attacked and ravaged by the forces of Mohammad bin Tughlak. After the repeated attacks and the killing of Ballala III, in the battle against the Sultan of Madura in 1342, the Hoysalas were forced to relinquish their beautiful capital.
The town was then nostalgically referred to as “Halebid” or the “Old Capital”. It was re-occupied again & thr Hoysala capital shifted to Belur, just 16kms away.

About 30 mins drive from Chennakesava Temple, Belur, its a good idea to visit both the temples in a trip. The carvings on the temple wall are impressive. The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva and hence the premises have 2 monolith like statues of Nandi. Look closely at the patterns and it is possible to find a glimpse of the lives of the people back at the time of the Hoysala rulers. Depending on your interest its possible to spend over 2 hours here.

The site is a beautiful example of the architecture of the past dynasty. The temple is well conserved, and very vividly crafted. Each and every wall has so many carvings, and each of the carvings tell a different and captivating story. The way the whole place is planned, although most of it is now ruined, still it is a great symbol of the great past we had. There are a few sculptures which are way ahead of the time when they were created and are almost impossible to believe that the people of that time had the vision of such distant future. Overall a must visit, and taking a guide is a must. It is all in the carvings and structure, which can be seen only when focussed upon.

Definitely worth a visit. Remember to hire a guide. Guide would cost 300/- INR for a short round around the temple. This place is a photographer's paradise. I was heartbroken to learn about the damages done to this temple by the invaders
