Walk down the memory lane and imagine a rich empire with people all around doing things that were ancient as per your knowledge of history. Imagine gems being sold as we see vendors selling vegetable. Dancers, musicians, cattle’s, elephants, horses, tradesmen, aristocrats all mingling and trading.

A queen taking a dip to prepare for the morning worship of the deity that resides amongst the palace temple.

The suns light hitting the temple and adjoins areas at the same time.

The golden stones reflecting the lights to lighten up the darkest corners.

People brimming with joy for another day in paradise. The chirping of birds. The water flowing far in the river and still being heard miles away.

It was a land of mystic and the magnificent.

Close your eyes and feel it!

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century. Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularly the Portuguese, say that Hampi was a prosperous, wealthy and grand city near the Tungabhadra River, with numerous temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal. The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered, pillaged and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins.

Still more Infrastructure facilities of staying has to develop to make this place visitors friendly. I hope September to February might be the suitable season to visit this place.

Hampi as we call it, has been integral to the folklore of Karnataka. This is before the recent fame that Hampi has acquired among tourists and backpackers. Hampi doesn’t just represent the physical antiquity of a bygone empire, it is the physical embodiment of the enormous tragedy that shattered the very soul of Karnataka in the extraordinary downfall of the last great Karnata Empire! So the native perspective starts out differently, and not as some cool dude rocks to see, boulder climbin’, pot smokin, selfie haven… (I don’t mind the pot, but guys the native Aborigines have a story to tell!)

Hampi for long was called “Haal Hampe” which meant “Ruined Hampi”, it used to signify an extremely derelict dilapidated place. It was an idiom for ruination, nobody visited it and were loathe to think about it. People wouldn’t want to talk about it lest bad omens visit them.

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagar empire around 1500 AD, and by some accounts, the second largest city in the world at that time. Over the next centuries it fell out of importance, and now you can explore the ruins of a lot of temples and other structures spread out over a vast area. The terrain around Hampi is as mysterious as the ruins itself - the city is surrounded by boulders of different sizes, and you can climb to the top of them with a little effort to get a stunning view of the entire city and the geography. It is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. Famous for its massive, beautifully carved temples, especially the Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to the patron deity of the empire. You can also find remains of the old aqueducts, canals and military barracks and stables here. Hampi was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986 and many efforts have been taken to restore the lost glory of the place - very limited (if any) modern establishments are allowed in the main area, which gives an authentic feel to the ruins.

The Archaeological Museum at Kamalapura is dedicated to the ruins of Hampi and the Vijayanagara Empire. Kamalapura is a small town in the Bellary district in Karnataka. It is situated within the ruins of the old city of Vijayanagara and just outside the ‘Royal Centre’ of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The Archaeological Museum at Kamalapura is a small but significant museum that preserves the relics and artefacts related to the Vijayanagara Empire and its ruins.
The museum started functioning in 1972 and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. It captures the beauty of the bygone days of Hampi in a wonderful manner.

May not enjoy this as it is most of ruins. No crowded. After seeing this you may start hating one who ruined hampi. Not a place for pleasure but for archelogocal study. Takes more than 2hrs. Kids will no like this place as most of the things are broken and ruined. Better have your own vehicle arranged for roaming around the places in hampi
