Ruined City:
On the banks of the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka, there was once a small village called Hampi. In the 14th century the village grew into a large city. It was known as Vijayanagaram. The city was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire.
It became a famous and prosperous city in Asia. Its name and fame attracted traders and seafarers from all over the world. The arrival of foreigners further increased the prosperity of the city.
A Portuguese merchant says, wrote this in his notes after visiting the city. “I stood on a hill and saw the greater part of that city. It was bigger and more beautiful than Rome. "
Such a great city fell into ruin after 1565. The Vijayanagara Empire fell due to a great battle called the Battle of Rakkasatangadi. As soon as the Deccan forces dominated the war, these townspeople started migrating from there. Vijayanagar was sacked and deserted.
The ruined city had fallen into disrepair and was described as a 'ghost city'. Later they started calling the city by its old name Hampi. Some called it 'Halu Hampi' and 'Bad Hampi'.
Presently the place of Vijayanagara is a world tourist city. They admire the ruined city of Hampi. An area of 26 square kilometers is maintained under the Department of Archaeology. UNESCO declared Hampi as a World Heritage Site in 1986.

The empire's legacy includes many monuments spread over South India, the best known of which is the group at Hampi. Different temple building traditions in South and Central India came together in the Vijayanagara Architecture style. This synthesis inspired architectural innovation in Hindu temples' construction. Efficient administration and vigorous overseas trade brought new technologies such as water management systems for irrigation. The empire's patronage enabled fine arts and literature to reach new heights in Kannada,  Telugu,  Tamil, and Sanskrit, while Carnatic music evolved into its current form. The Vijayanagara Empire created an epoch in South Indian history that transcended regionalism by promoting Hinduism as a unifying factor.

One can visit the place to understand glorious past of Ancient India.

Hampi, a temple town in northern Karnataka, was once the capital of the historical Vijayanagara Dynasty. This quaint place, lying amidst striking ruins of the past, has been receiving tourists from far off for ages. The magnificence of the ruins of temples and other structures of Vijayanagar, dating back to 1500 AD, is the main attraction of this place. According to some accounts, Hampi used to be the second largest city of the world.

There are innumerable boulders around Hampi that are easy to climb. One can get a stunning view of the ruins spread around Hampi by mounting one of the boulders. Located on the bank of the Tungabhadra River, Hampi has quite a number of tourist attractions like Virupaksha Temple, Vithala Temple and Nandi Statue. It is best to visit Hampi during the three day long Hampi festival held around October-November every year.

Hampi, also referred to as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in east-central Karnataka, India.  It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century.  Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularly the Portuguese, state Hampi was a prosperous, wealthy and grand city near the Tungabhadra River, with numerous temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal.  The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered, pillaged and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins.

From far away, the large sculpture looks alluring—a fine carving, ancient stories of Mahabharata and Ramayana, of defeat and victory—but as I approach it seems to shape-shift. Almost all sculptures exhibit three-dimensional figures. With thousands of figures, miniatures to as large as mountains, they serve as bright, suggestive glimpses of the possibility inherent in the lost city of Vijayanagara. Visiting these sites seemed like reality of the time, and some of their dreams.

My parents and I set out on a historical tour of southern India. We covered many sites ranging from Somnathapura to Bellur, to Pattadakal, to the Badami caves. Each site, each figure looked different. To me, they looked like they were made of desires and fears, even if the threads of their discourse seem secret, their rules must be absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything must have concealed something else.

Best amongst these sites was Hampi, which is sheer florid magnificence of the lost city.
