On the green, sprawling lawns of Cubbon Park is the Attara Kacheri, which is the home of the High Court of Karnataka. It is in the heart of the City of Bangalore (now Bengaluru), opposite Vidhana Soudha, which houses the State Legislature, and the Secretariat. The road in between the pillars of democracy is aptly named ‘Ambedkar Veedhi’ in honour of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, clearly separating the Executive from the Judiciary.
Territorial Integration of Karnataka State:
A renowned American Judge and Jurist, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr’s reflection that the law is its own experience holds true for the institutions that uphold the law.
Any study of the judicial institutions in the State of Karnataka would have to bear in mind three distinct territorial jurisdictions – erstwhile Mysore State Bombay – Karnataka area, and Hyderabad – Karnataka area. Added to this, are the coastal areas of Karnataka [Mangaluru region] and Coorg (Kodagu) which were part of the erstwhile British India. On re-organization of Karnataka State all the distinct territorial jurisdictions were merged to form Mysore State, which was renamed as Karnataka on 1 November 1973.
The history of the Karnataka High Court can be traced back to the year 1884 when the Chief Court of Mysore was created with three judges and was designated as the highest court of appeal, reference and revision in the State of Mysore, the earlier name of Karnataka. In 1930, it was renamed as the High Court Mysore and the Chief Judge was given the new name of Chief Justice. In 1973, it got its present name of Karnataka High Court.
The high courts of India are the highest courts of appellate jurisdiction in each state and union territory of India. However, a high court exercises its original civil and criminal jurisdiction only if the subordinate courts are not authorized by law to try such matters for lack of pecuniary, territorial jurisdiction. High courts may also enjoy original jurisdiction in certain matters, if so designated specially by the constitution, a state or union law.
The work of most high courts primarily consists of appeals from lower courts and writ petitions in terms of Articles 226 and 227 of the constitution. Writ jurisdiction is also an original jurisdiction of a high court.

Great view and the architectural design. I hope the blind justice wakes up to administer true justice and establish integrity and trust in the judicial process. Fascinating dress code of the bar members and interesting to find many women in legal professions. Honestly, hats off to them. Enjoyed the short day tour at this historical place which makes historical difference in judgements everyday. I hope that truth triumphs.
