This is the largest statue in Hampi. Narasimha is sitting on the coil of a giant seven-headed snake called Sesha. The heads of the snake acts as the hood above his head. The god sits in a cross-legged Yoga position with a belt supporting the knees.

IMPORTANT INFO
The idol is partially destroyed, but a small variant of the idol can be found on one of the pillars of Vijay Vitthala Temple, check the pictures attached along this review.

The original statue contained the image of goddess Lakshmi, consort of the god, sitting on his lap. But this statue has been damaged seriously during the raid leading to the fall of Vijayanagara.

Sometimes this is referred as Ugra Narasimha (i.e. Narasimha in its terrifying form). The protruding eyes and the facial expression are the basis for this name.
Narasimha (means half-man’half-lion in local the languages) is on of the ten incarnations (avatar) of Lord Vishnu.

My visit to the Narasimha Swamy Temple in Hampi was a journey into the heart of divine tranquility. Nestled amidst the awe-inspiring ruins of Hampi, this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha provided a serene and spiritually enriching experience.

The imposing monolith of Lord Narasimha, with its lion-faced deity, stood as a powerful symbol of the divine. The centuries-old idol, though partially damaged, exuded a palpable sense of history and reverence. The intricate detailing on the idol hinted at the skilled craftsmanship of the artisans who sculpted it.

The Lakshmi Narasimha statue is one of the most imposing sculptures found in the ruined town of Hampi. The speciality of the sculpture is that it is the largest monolith statue in Hampi. The statue is located on the southern side of the Hemakuta group of temples that stand on the Hemakuta Hill.

This gigantic stone structure is considered to be among the most important monuments found in Hampi. It is a major tourist attraction and is visited by a large number of people throughout the year.

The Lakshmi Narasimha statue and the temple housing the statue were built in the year 1528 A. D. It was constructed during the rule of Krishnadevaraya, one of the greatest rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire. The temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, one of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi. As such, the temple is known as the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple.

This is one of the very popular temples in Hampi, displaying a giant monolith structure with intricate design and architecture. There is a Linga temple right next to it, the place is neatly maintained, surrounded by greenery, you could just park your car or bike outside, visit the temple and then relax in the shade of trees in the temple compound. Very relaxing place, you could go early in the morning also to avoid crowd, it is hardly 5-10 mins from the main market area of Hampi.

A must visit place!

Laxmi Narayan temple aka Ugra Narasimha Temple is one of the famous attractions of Hampi. The statue of Narasimha was destroyed by invading Deccans and what you see currently is the idol with incomplete parts. The Godess Laxmi, sitting on his lap is no more a part of this idol.
The temple has one distinct entry where you can find multiple shops of snack items as well as cold drinks (coconut water, sugarcane juice, Nimbu soda etc.)
You can also find multiple small shops selling traditional, hand crafted, carved marble goods like miniature of Ganesh, animals etc.
Just next to Narasimha statue is the Shivalinga.

A half man and half lion is what one can imagine Narasimha as. The deity has a human body with a face of a lion. The deity is known as the great protector and protects his devotees in the times of need and is widely worshiped by a significant group of Vaishnavas.
In modern media Narasimha is generally shown either in a yogic posture or with goddess Lakshmi or in a furious look, tearing apart an Asura (demon). The latter depiction is taken from the story when Narasimha’s emerged to protect Prahlad.

Best place to visit is early morning as there will be no one around. There's also monolithic Shiva Linga next to this place. You can capture beautiful sunrise if you visit here in the morning time. This place is feast to your eyes. Must and must visit if you're in and around Hampi or Hospet.

It's a 22ft grand idol made of single stone and was carved by a brahmin. The original statue had four hands in different mudras and goddess laxmi on his left lap but they were destroyed by the Mughal invaders. The laxmi idol is presently in a British museum. A ribbon of stone was attached as a part of reconstruction but it was strongly opposed by Dr Shivaram Karanta, a famous social worker of Karnataka. It is next to the badavi linga and at a walking distance from Hampi bus stand. Since the idol was broken currently no pooja is performed here. There's no roof over the idol.

Grew up learning about almost all these heritage and was overwhelmed to finally see the famous temples and idols that we read about in school textbooks. This 6.7mtr high statue originally had Goddess Lakshmi sitting on Narasimha's lap and hence the name. But it now only has the ruins after the destruction. Went here during daytime and also late afternoon. The setting sun hid behind the statue, giving a beautiful treat to the eyes.

The Temple has the Majestic Narasimha statue but the sad thing is that you see the statue being damaged by the mughals back in 1600s.

Not much remains of the temple but the narasimha idol is noteworthy! As I have mentioned in my other posts as well. Hampi has to be seen on foot. Its a good idea to start with this temple and then just stay on the path to walk through the Krishna temple and Krishna bazaar, followed by the Hemakuta hills, on to Virupaksha temple! At this point you have a long way to go.so take a few snaps and move on ;)

Nice statue. This is the largest statue in Hampi and depicts Lord Narasimha in a terrifying or angry form. Narasimha which means half-man and half-lion is one of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. This monolithic structure, which is 6.7 m in height, has the lord sitting cross-legged position on the coil of a giant seven-headed snake Adishesha. Originally the statue also had Goddess Lakshmi sitting on lord’s lap, but according to history it was vandalised and damaged in the year 1565. The statue of Goddess Lakshmi can now be seen in Kamalapura Museum.

Brings to the forefront how rich and famous our culture and kingdom was before falling prey to the invaders

Great piece of architecture. This is a monolithic structure and dedicated to Narasimha bhagwan. The height of statue is 22 feet and Bhagwan Narasimha is sitting upon coiled Shesnaga. Bhagwan Narasimha is one of the incarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu. Word Narasimha is made of two words 'Nara' and 'Simha' means Man and lion. The

The part of statue was destroyed by Islamic invaders. Another famous temple named as 'BadavaLinga' is in the same compound.
