We started our journey to matanga hills at 4: 45 in the morning from our guest house near to Virupaksha temple. We were able to reach the hilltop by 5: 30am by taking short breaks after every couple of mins. There are 2 routes to matanga hills and I believe we had taken the risky one. From the challenging ascent to the awe-inspiring sunrise witnessed from the hilltop, every moment spent on this adventure was nothing short of magical. The rugged terrain, scattered ruins, and the mighty Tungabhadra River winding through the valley was a treat for our eyes. For anyone visiting Hampi, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on the climb to Matanga Hills. Be prepared for a rewarding trek, surrounded by magnificent scenery and crowned by a sunrise that will leave an indelible mark on your soul. It is an experience that captures the essence of Hampi's enchantment, combining history, nature, and spirituality in an unforgettable journey.
Terrain is a bit hard! But a 20-30 mins trek.must visit place… not suggested to visit in the evenings as it would be difficult to climb down in the dark
Beautiful hike up the hill for gorgeous views and satisfying experience of scrambling up the rocky steps, takes just about 30 to 40 min to reach the top.
It is totally worth climbing this hill. We climbed it in 30 mins, it is not very high but the climb might be scary to few people. There are two paths to climb this hill; one path is from the hanuman temple and one path is from the back side. There is also a small river in the back side of the hill and it is worth taking a dip there too. You can get a very good view of Achyutaraya temple and Virupaksha temple from there.
Beautiful place to view sunset. It has nice trekking of 500m (max) view from top is totally worth it. The Virupaksha temple is also very near from here.
If you are planning to visit Hampi then you should definitely explore this place. It takes less 20 minutes to climb and it's very easy but be careful if you are visiting in monsoon. It will give a scenic view of HAMPI and Thungbhadhra rivers that look so attractive and beautiful. Also this river makes the city look so soothing along with that sunset looks so gorgeous from top. Also Sree Virupaksha Temple looks beautiful from the top. A nice place to chill!
There are two ways up. One past the monolithic bull, up the stairs and following the trail till you get to what looks like an abandoned set of stairs. I climbed up this way. It was a lot of fun.
However came down using the stairs on the other side. It was scary at times specially the first 100 steps. But post that point it was awesome. This trail comes out, in front of the Krishna Temple on the opposite side of the road.
One of the must hill to climb in hampi, you can get stunning view of vijayanagara empire and you will fall in love with the view, you must take some care while climbing the hill, you can climb the hill by 3 ways the best way is opposite side of virupaksha bazar. At a distance of 1 km from Hampi Bus Stand, Matanga Hill is located at the eastern end of the Hampi Bazaar. It offers a breathtaking view of the ruined city and the beautiful landscape below.
Matanga Hill is one of the major places to visit in Hampi. Being the highest point in Hampi; this is the best spot to get an aerial view of Hampi and its surroundings. There is a small temple on the top of Matanga Hill. On the way down there is a small cave marked where it is believed that Sugriva, ruler of Kishkinda, used to hide.
According to mythology, Matanga Hill is one of the holy places described in the epic Ramayana as the base of Saint Matanga. It is also the place where Sugriva benefited from the magical protection of the sage Matanga who had placed a curse of death on Vali, if he dared enter the area of Matanga Hill.
Being the highest peak in Hampi, the hill is a trekker's delight and offers pleasing views of the entire town below. There are many trekking paths that lead to the top of the hilltop where the Veerabhadra Temple is located. The climbing can take around 30 minutes. The roof top of the Veerabhadra Temple is the ideal place for sunrise and sunset view. From the top of the hill, one can view the Achyutaraya Temple, Tungabhadra River, Virupaksha Temple, Hampi Bazar and surroundings.
One major thing to be noted about the Matanga Hill is the stepped ramp at the western side. Most popular track passing at the base of the hill is the track between Hampi Bazaar and Achyutaraya Temple. There are many trials that lead to the bottom of the foothill. The most prominent of it is that which leads to the east which closes at the Kadalekalu Ganesha temple. The next popular trail is to the east end of Hampi Bazaar Street.
The highest point of Hampi, this place gives you a birds eye view of the beautiful archaeological ruins of the city of Hampi. This also happened to be one of the best places to watch the sunrise and sunset from. There are multiple trek routes to the top - I took the one bang opposite to the Hampi Police Station and the way to the top was just amazing. Ensure to carry sufficient water and glucose if possible so as not to dehydrate yourself. The last few steps to the temple are a bit tricky for novice trekkers hence be very careful.
Nice trek if you love adventure - All the readers - beware which path you choose to reach the top. After some ground work, we took the path from achyutaraya temple as we read that the other path from the monolith bull is tough. We started early before sunrise but it rained for sometime and all the boulders were wet. As there is not much light and no one around, it was tough to find the actual route to reach to the top. With no one around and just 2 of us, we made it close to the top, as beyond that there are no steps and the rocks were little slippery as they are wet. So didn't venture beyond that point. But looks like we were almost close to the top but not really at the top. The views from there are also good esp the achyutaraya temple, courtesans street, Virupaksha temple, other ruins, the Hampi river, anjanadri hill. Will definitely try next time as we were leaving in the afternoon. Looks like there is one route from the monolith bull which has good steps till the top. The path taken determines whether you reach the top or not. You will love it if you are up for some trek and adventure. One more advice is to travel light, avoid carrying anything. For at times you might need to walk on all fours ;)
A good and short trek to the beautiful view of the remains of the old majestic city. One side is the Virupaksha Temple and market and on the other side the Achutharaya Temple and market.
From Monolithic bull to Matang hill top, it's about 30 minutes Trek route, please wear a good griped shoe other wise it's little difficult to treak as the way is sleepery.
Matanga hill is located opposite to virupaksha temple. It gives great view of virupaksha temple and one can watch both sunrise and sunset from the top. It also offers great view of Achyutaraya temple and all the ruins nearby.
Small trek, a must visit if you love trekking. Best at sunrise and sunset. Near to virupaksha temple. Be little more careful during trek as the steps are not well carved. Awesome view from top.
Hampi is a UNESCO heritage place and anyone who comes solo or with their own gang of friends or with the families will never miss to come to this beautiful Matanga hills which is a small hike towards the hill top temple where you can experience a beautiful view of Hampi and it old town beauty. It’s best at both sunrise and sunset, must visit place.
Breath taking view from the top. It's whole of hampi at a glance. Must visit place. Trek is intermediate level, at some places one has to walk on rocks with no specific carving for steps but it's only small patch. Rest of the way has steps but each of steps are quiet steep. Sport shoes are must otherwise your knees are going to get hurt while returning.
Very good place to visit at sunset time, U will experience advanture while climbing few difficult patches, from top u can view 360 degree of Hampi n beautiful temple in golden light.
