I recently had the pleasure of visiting Mirjan Fort during the rainy season, and it was a truly enchanting experience. The fort, located amidst the picturesque landscapes of Karnataka, takes on a whole new level of beauty during this time of the year.

The rainy season transformed the surroundings into a lush, green paradise. As the raindrops kissed the ancient walls of the fort, it added a sense of mystique and serenity to the entire atmosphere. The vibrant flora that surrounds the fort seemed to come alive, creating a vivid contrast against the ancient stone structure.

Accessibility was surprisingly good despite the rain. The paths were a bit muddy in places, but it added to the adventure of exploring this historical gem. Plus, the reduced crowds allowed for a more intimate and peaceful experience.

I was pleased to see that Mirjan Fort has been well-maintained, even in the rainy season. There were no visible signs of damage or erosion due to the weather. This speaks volumes about the efforts put into preserving this historical site.

Overall, my visit to Mirjan Fort during the rainy season was a memorable one. The combination of history, nature, and the rainy ambiance created a unique and unforgettable experience. If you're a fan of history and enjoy the beauty of the monsoon, I highly recommend adding Mirjan Fort to your travel itinerary.

If you are a retrophile (someone who has a strong liking for things from the past) you should certainly consider mirjan fort as a part of your trip to north karnataka, gokarna or goa.

It is located just 500 metres from the NH66 highway and the drive to mirjan fort from gokarna is mesmerizing.

Mirjan fort glows during the rainy seasons (the entire fort is covered with lush green grasses) and i would personally recommend everyone to visit the fort post monsoon.
Tip: visit in the evenings and carry a raincoat or an umbrella if you are visiting in the monsoons.

Nothing to worry about food, bcs there a small restaurants and food stalls just outside the fort.

Places nearby: yana caves, gokarna, murdeshwar temple, scuba diving at murdeshwar beach etc.

Clean and a magnificent fort.
From the looks of it can guess, the fort was used as a trade and cultural center.
The 2 large wells also have a side entrance when the water level is low.

Opening time is 8.0
closing time is 5.30
It takes Approx 1-1.30 hrs to cover the fort.

A hidden gem around 25 km away from the city of Gokarna. Not very popular amongst visitors but totally worth your time. This is big enough to spend one hour here and the fort looks much better than the ones you would have seen in Goa. Except for the fact there is no sea around

The Fort built by local Queen Chennabhairadevi of Gersoppa (under the Vijayanagara Empire) way back to the 14th or 15th century by most accounts and since then changed many hands. The fort is built with laterite stones and spread over an area of about 4.1 hectares (10 acres). The fort has four entrances (one main and three subsidiaries) and many wells, which are interlinked and accessible through channels (used as a defense measure). These wells originally linked to a canal system outside the fort’s limit. At present many of these interlinked channels are out of bound for tourists for maintenance purposes. Inside of Fort is partly in ruins which have been restored by Archeological Survey of India (ASI), have been inferred as remnants of a secret passage, entry doors, a Darbar hall and a marketplace. The Fort is maintained very nicely and neatly by ASI.

A fort located at the edge of Western ghats. The place is maintained very neatly. The recommended time to visit is October to February as the heat rises it's difficult to enjoy the fort as it is an open fortress. There is no entry ticket.
Located about 500 m from the main road.
No guides available
Parking space is available
You can see the grandness of our ancestors here at Mirjan fort.

#Historical fort built by Rani Chennabhairadevi known as the"Pepper Queen" or "kaaLumeNasina raaNi". This fort was used to store pepper which was exported via ships navigating though Aganashini river which flows very close to the fort and merges with the Arabian sea. This place needs more maintenance and is strictly for history lovers!

Best to visit in monsoons. The entire fort will be covered in greens. One of the best place to spend time mesmerizing the history of it's kind. Pics does not have greens since it is captured on January. Best visit time is between July and October to see the fort with lush greens.
22 जनवरी 2019 4:43
Very poorly maintained. Can be visited only during monsoon as the fort will be covered with a layer of greens that make it look beautiful. Else it feels like a haunted looking place. Therefore, don't get deceived by the beautiful pictures you find online. It's not big as well like any other fort you see.
12 जनवरी 2019 3:24
An ancient fort with nice views. The entry is free and the fort is perfect for photoshoot. It is well maintained. It is somewhat far from the gokarna town but you can take an auto for some 350 bucks to this place. Definitely worth a visit.

This place is on the way from kumta to Yana caves. Or it is near to Gokarna. The fact that it is around 200 m from the highway is a very attractive feature this attracts lot of tourists.from the top of the fort you could actually see the nearby river where boats are tied it's a beautiful sight.we bend during November time where the rains were less due to that we could see lot of dry grass all around the fort. This fort is reasonably tall but it is very big once you climb you could see that you can't cover all of the fort in say one hour time.
03 जनवरी 2019 22:45
Lots of space to run around, but not much to see beyond half hour. Good to walk around, click some pictures and leave. No guides/locals available to explain historical significance. Avoid visiting in summer as there's no shelter and too much to walk.

Fort of Queen Chennabhairadevi of Gersoppa used to live and administrate from here.
It looks lush green in the right season. Haven't seen any fort this green.
No entree fees.

I love Gokarna but this place is just not worth the time. I will try not go there again.
Not well maintained. Basically it's just an average fort. Avoid it if you can.

Understand it’s a 16th century fort which was then used to be a trading hub. At the rear end, you will find an area which looks like a Mosque but upon analyzing the features it can be a Hindu temple. It must have been taken over by s mogul king after defeating a Hindu king. This was explained by an ASI employee who was there at the time of our visit. Fort, mainly external walls and the flag hoisting elevated areas have all been well retained and the same is being maintained by ASI.

The Mirjan Fort  (kn: ಮಿರ್ಜಾನ್ ಕೋಟೆ) is located on the west coast of the Uttara Kannada district in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. The fort known for its architectural elegance was the location of several battles in the past. It is about 0.5 kilometres (0.31 mi) from the National Highway 66 and 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from Gokarna, the famous Hindu pilgrimage centre on the west coast of India.

According to the first historical version, Queen Chennabhairadevi of Gersoppa (under the Vijayanagara Empire) was initially credited with building the Mirjan Fort in the 16th century. She ruled for 54 years and also lived in the fort. During her reign, the port at Mirjan, which is 32 kilometres (20 mi) to the south east of Karwar, was used for shipping pepper,  saltpetre and betel nut to Surat. Gersoppa, a district annexed to Bednur, was famous for the pepper exported from this region. Consequently, the Portuguese gave the epithet "Rani, the Pepper queen" (“Rainha de Pimenta” in Portuguese) to the Queen of Gersoppa.

Nice fort. Road is very bad to go here. No proper board on the main road about the accessing the fort. It would have been good if there would be information available at the fort about who built it or when this was built by whom, sad to know that a national monument is in this state.

This was a surprisingly good location to visit. The fort has not been well maintained, but given the few visitors, it is mostly good to walk in. It has beautiful views, inside the fort as well as outside. I would recommend this fort to be kept in a Gokarna itinerary.

There is no entry fee. No parking fee. One small shop is near the fort. Other then that u won't get anything to eat or drink. So bring your own food.

One of the beautiful fort. After rennovation the fort look improved. Civil engineers must study this fort. It is nearly 58km from murudeshwar towards gokarna. And 22 km from gokarna towards Murudeshwar. Just. 1km from NH66. Don't miss it while traveling in this direction.
