Visited on a Wednesday in December, this seems to be a very popular time for school visits. It was lovely to see all the people enjoying the Palace and to be able to interact with them. I must admit that I paid little attention to the guide preferring instead to marvel at the architecture, the intricate work in the carvings and the beautiful paintings. Sorry to all the history buffs out there, but dates and names just aren't my thing You have to take your shoes off to enter the Palace

Mysore Palace is a cultural treasure that offers a fascinating journey into the history of Mysore. While it can get crowded, the architecture, art, and ambiance make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring this vibrant city.

It's always a beautiful place. But the last time when I visited, we were not able to see many things inside the palace which I used to see years back. Dunno what has changed. Normally it takes around 3 hours and last time it took less than 1.5 hours.

Also they have tied a camel in the backyard where it could not even sit. It's trying hard to stand and we can see the suffering in its posture. This should not be done on the backyard of a greatest palace.

Most of the palace rooms are closed due to COVID-19? Only you can enjoy the flowers show and lightings.

The Mysore Palace, once the residence of the Wodeyars, is one of the largest palaces of its kind in India, and one of the most splendid.

The palace has now been converted into a museum, which treasures the souvenirs, paintings, jewellery, royal costumes and other items, which were once possessed by the Wodeyars. It is said that the palace displays the largest collection of gold items, quantity wise.

The Golden Royal Elephant Throne, the Durbar Hall, and the Kalyan Mandap (wedding hall) are the main attractions here. The entry to the palace is through a beautiful gallery featuring Indian and European sculpture and ceremonial objects. Halfway along is the Elephant Gate, which is the main entrance to the center of the palace. The gate is decorated with floriated designs, and bears the Mysore royal symbol of a double-headed eagle. To the north of the gate the Royal Elephant Throne is displayed which is embellished with 84 kilogram of 24-carat gold.

Walls leading to the Kalyan Mandap are lined with intricate oil paintings, illustrating the royal procession of the Mysore Dussehra Festival. A unique thing about these paintings is that seen from any direction, the procession seems to be coming in one's own direction. The hall itself is magnificent and is decorated with huge chandeliers, and multicoloured stain glas

s arranged in peacock designs. The historic Durbar Hall of the palace has an ornate ceiling and sculpted pillars which are said to have been painted with gold. It is also a treasure house of rare paintings by some celebrated artists. This hall, which is up the stairs, offers wonderful view of the Chamundi Hills that towers over the city and houses a temple dedicated to the Goddess Chamundeshwari, the royal family's patron deity.

The palace looks even more grand and beautiful on Sunday evenings and on festivals when it is illuminated with thousands of light bulb

Welcome to the Royal Splendour of Mysuru, the home of the Wodyers who ruled Mysuru for more than 500 years, known as the City of Palaces, Mysuru retains a quaint charm, that never fails to enchant. Mysuru is a popular tourist destination, offering several attractions ranging from the royal splendour of Mysuru City and its fabulous Dasara Festival to exquisite temples, pilgrimage centres and scenic spots.

The royal lineage can be traced back to 1399, when Yaduraya, a royal prince of the Yadava dynasty, was on a pilgrimage visit to Chamundi Temple with his brother Vijaya, They took shelter in the Kodi Bhairava temple on the banks of Doddakere, the ‘Big Lake’. There they came to learn that the local royal family was in great danger. Their ruler had just died, and Maranayaka, a neighboring chief, was threatening the queen. He wanted her daughter’s hand in marriage. The queen and the princess were in very vulnerable position. With the help of Jangama (Wadiyar) killed Maranayaka and married the daughter of Chamaraja and succeeded to the Mysuru principality. And so the Wodyer dynasty was established – a succession of 25 kings who ruled until 1947, when Mysuru became part of the Indian Union.

The Mysore Palace is a historical palace and the royal residence (house) at Mysore in the Indian State of Karnataka. It is the official residence of the Yadav Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of the Kingdom of Mysore. The palace is in the centre of Mysore, and faces the Chamundi Hills eastward. Mysore is commonly described as the 'City of Palaces', and there are seven palaces including this one; however, 'Mysore Palace' refers specifically to this one within the Old fort. Everything is perfect here
The architectural style of domes of the palace is commonly described as Indo-Saracenic, with blends of the Hindu,  Mughal,  Rajput, and Gothic styles. It is a three-story stone structure with marble domes, and has a 145-foot five-story tower. The palace is surrounded by a large garden. The entrance gate and arch hold the emblem and coat of arms of the kingdom of Mysore, around which is written the kingdom's motto in Sanskrit: "न बिभॆति कदाचन" (never terrified).

The main complex is 245 Ft in length and also 156 Ft in width. There are fire extinguishing machines located in all parts of the palace in order to prevent any fires. [5] The palace has three entrances: the East Gate (the front gate, opened only during the Dasara and for dignitaries), the South Entrance (for public), and the West Entrance (usually opened only during the Dasara).

The three-story stone building of a fine grey granite with deep pink marble domes has a facade with several expansive arches and two smaller ones flanking the central arch, which is supported by tall pillars. Above the central arch is a sculpture of Gajalakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and abundance with her elephants. There are three major exclusive temple buildings within the Old Fort, and about 18 inside the palace heart building. The palace was built adjacent to the even older Parakala Mutt headquarters, whose leaders have remained the rajagurus (royal teacher and guide) of Mysore kings. The kings of Mysore were devotees of Goddess Chamundi, hence the palace's facing the Chamundi Hills. [6]

The palace houses two durbar halls (ceremonial meeting halls of the royal court) and incorporates an array of courtyards, gardens, and buildings.

Mysore is commonly described as the 'City of Palaces', and there are seven palaces including this one; however, 'Mysore Palace' refers specifically to this one within the Old fort.

The land on which the palace now stands was originally known as puragiri, and is now known as the Old Fort. Yaduraya built the first palace inside the Old Fort in the 14th century, which was demolished and constructed multiple times. The current structure was constructed between 1897 and 1912, after the Old Palace was burnt ablaze.

Mysore Palace is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India, after the Taj Mahal, with more than 6 million annual visitors.

The last palace, now known as the Old Palace or the Wooden Palace, was burnt into ashes during the 1896 marriage event (Dasara festivities). Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his mother Maharani Kempananjammanni Devi, commissioned the British architect Henry Irwin to build a new palace. Meanwhile, the royal family stayed in the close by Jaganmohan Palace. The construction was overseen by an executive engineer in the Mysore Palace division. He had conducted elaborate architectural studies during his visits to Delhi, Madras, and Calcutta, and these were used in planning for the new palace. The construction cost was placed at Rs 41,47,913 (around $30 million adjusted to inflation) and was completed in 1912.

Mysore Palace: History

Of the seven palaces that dot the cityscape of Mysore, this royal edifice is the most splendid one. The palace had its foundation laid way back in the 14th century by the Wodeyars or Wadiyars, the royal family of Mysore. It is believed that Yaduraya Wodeyar, the first ruler of the Mysore Kingdom, built a palace in Puragiri aka the Old Fort during his reign. This palace, which is believed to be the predecessor of the current palace, has been demolished and reconstructed multiple times over a period of six centuries.

Initially, the palace was a wooden fortress which was struck by lightning in 1638 and reconstructed under the rein of Kantirava Narasa Raja Wodeyar.  In 1793 AD, when Tipu Sultan took over the Wodeyar Dynasty, he demolished the palace and rebuilt it. In 1799, soon after the death of Tipu Sultan, the palace came under Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, who redesigned the palace as per the Hindu architectural style.

Sadly, in 1897, the palace was destroyed by fire during the wedding ceremony of Princess Jayalakshmmanni. Again, Maharani Kempananjammanni Devi and her son Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV decided to rebuild the palace. The task of revamping the palace was commissioned to a British architect named Henry Irwin, who designed and completed this palace in 1912, at a whopping cost of over 41 lakh Indian rupees. Further expansions were done and a Public Durbar Hall wing was added to the palace under the reign of Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar during the 1930s.

Mysore Palace Architecture

Mysore Palace is built in the Indo-Saracenic style with a touch of Hindu, Mughal, Rajput, and Gothic architectural styles. The three-storied palace along with a 145 feet five-storied tower was built using fine grey granite while deep pink marble was used for the domes. The exterior of this marvelous structure is enriched with two durbar halls, several arches, canopies, columns and bay windows. There is also a sprawling green garden surrounding the palace. The interiors are opulently designed with carved doors, stained glass ceilings, glittering glazed flooring tiles, spectacular Czechoslovakian chandeliers, and works of art from all over the world. All the rooms of the palace are stunningly luxurious and quite appealing.

Above the central arch, there is a divine sculpture of Gajalakshmi – the goddess of wealth with two elephants. In addition to the three entrances, located on the eastern, southern, and western sides, the palace features several secret tunnels. There is also a group of temples at the palace, built from the 14th to the 20th century.

Astonished on seeing Mysore Maharaja Palace in a vast area. So many number of rooms. All the doors are fully with unimagineable sculpture wood works. Two silver doors. Very big dharbar halls in three floors.

One full day to be spent the entire palace.

Working hours 9 am to 5pm. Evening hours chanting colourful lights.

Everyone should not miss to see in life!
24 मार्च 2019 15:53
You will be given a waiver if you are a student. And sandalwood can be bought in the store that's in Mysore palace. You don't have to go searching for a store that sells pure sandalwood.
24 मार्च 2019 6:58
Absolutely loved it. You've got to see it at least once in your lifetime. I mean just imagine having a wife in every room that's how big the palace is. The gold plating all over the walls, The paintings, the architecture, just awesome.

You can visit the Palace anytime between 10am-5pm where you can roam inside the palace and also around it. After that the palace will be closed only to be opened for the light show for which you have to take ticket separately.

The best thing about the palace is the 16000+ lights which is lit up at the night. But unfortunately you won't be able to see the lights at all times. In order to witness the lights throughout the night then it can only be during the time of "Dasara Festival" which is a totally different chapter. Apparently it's how they remember the culture and traditions which were practiced during the time of the palace Kings "The so called Mysuru Arasaru".

But there is a way you can witness these lights for a very short period of time every night i.e, through a the "Light show" which will be held every night from 7pm-8: 30pm, Here you'll get to know the history of Mysuru empire, their Kings, culture, the palace and the tragic history of how the empire ended.

All of this will be put into a beautiful storyline (only audio and not to mention the entire story is in kannada language only and dramatic music of traditional Indian musicals which is just fascinating if you happen to understand it) which is mixed with the beautiful programmed light show of the palace lights from outside. You have to remember you can't go inside the palace after it's close for the day. But instead you'll be seated in the lawn outside the palace and is viewed from a distance.

At the end, the whole palace with 16000+ lights will be lit for about 10-15 minutes and that's it. It is closed only to be opened for the next day.

The ticket was priced at Rs. 50/- per head. Separate tickets for both palace visit as well as the light show, each costing same I.e,
Rs. 50. Sligjtly lesser for senior, If it is an educational trip then it's really cheap morelike Rs. 10/- per head, And so on.

I'm embarrassed to say this but it's almost twice the cost if you're a foreigner. It's the same for every other tourist place in India. I just don't see why they do it.

But event though it's twice the price for foreigners its relatively less compared to an amusement park. Not to mention the amazing experience of the Mysuru culture and history. Do visit it, I highly recommend it.
24 मार्च 2019 3:00
They are maintaining it well. Entry charge is 50 per person only till 6pm. After 6pm, they won't allow it inside, though you can see light show between 7-8pm for which also cost is 50rs.

Definitely palace is a place that everyone wants to visit, I have been here twice and many rooms inside the palace has been closed. I feel the palace has lost its charm over the years.
I went to see Hamburger Savari on Durgastami, the arrangements weren't so good. We hardly got water and chairs. It was very difficult to see the procession as it was crowdy. Definitely a good historical place to visit, you LL fall in love with the palace inside architecture and big mirrors. The tiles and the marbles used were very classy.
