Loved seeing the fishermen at work. Located in one of the busiest areas and the place not that clean yet there was something about it that made it beautiful.
Very close to Fort Cochin ferry.we can sit and watch how the people fishing using the Chinese fishing nets. We can also buy the fresh fish from them. From here you can see the boats and ships coming and going through the water
A very postcard worthy spot in Fort Kochi. Perfect to see the sunset. Local fishermen around will show you how the Chinese fishing nets work. (They'll charge so ask beforehand.)
Locally known as" Cheena Vala" these huge cantilevered fishing nets are believed to have been brought by sometime between 1350 and 1450 by traders from the court of Kublai Khan, some others say Chinese explorer Zhang He introduced the nets to Kochi shores. While some accounts mention that the nets were set up by the Portuguese from Macau, an erstwhile Portuguese colony. Irrespective of who brought them first, they are one of the most significant symbols of the rich exchange of culture and ideas that existed in the Indian subcontinent at the time.
Was amused to see this place. This place has so many fishermen catching fish. I got a chance to witness the live catching. Every time they lowered the nets, there were many catch.
We even managed to buy few tiger prawns from the local shop and had a tawa fry prepared by the local shop guy.
It is a historic place. Lots of Forts and church nearby. Chinese fish nets are traditional type fishing net operated manually by group of people. Its a good sight. Can buy fresh fish from there.
These nets are manually operated catapult nets. It goes down, catches fish and then brought up to collect. The fun thing for me was the fact that when the nets are up with fish and fishermen are collecting the fishes, a lot of birds also come and have feast.
Awesome but lil touristy if you want to see working fishing nets cross the vypin island take a jetty boat there right opposite to the current fishing nets it's good over there and less people go.thete
You can enjoy the sunset at this place. Really beautiful. One of the few places having these type of fishing nets. They are operational. Fishermen will show you how it works and also you can buy freshly caught fish from them. The place is easily accessible through buses and even ferries. The place has a walkway surrounded by huge trees. The place is colorful with vendors having beautiful products.
Very dirty beach, litter, plastic, food and you name it scattered everywhere. Stray dogs feasting on everything remotely edible. 'Fishermen' only seem interested in ripping off tourists that wander onto their pier. To add to the apocalyptic scene two distant ugly oil refineries spoil what could be a good view. As it is this place is highly overrated and you will have to be very creative to get a good photo or a master of photoshop! Do yourself a favour and avoid, you haven't missed anything.
Though traveled a lot but this type of fishing I enconterd at Kochi only. It's a unique experience to witness. Such nets are used in coastal southern China and Indochina and may be were brought here by a Chinese visitor. These nets are worth watching and are surely a unique tourist attraction.
It is a must do if in fortkochi but don’t have high expectations, the place is not well taken care. Unfortunately you will see a lot of garbage in the beach. My pictures have a good angle, excluding most of the garbage!
The fishing nets themselves are amazing and worth a visit. Especially at sunset, they are an iconic frame. Those are usually surrounded by fishermen. Yet, the beach is covered with litter around the nets. This is so distracting and the experience diminishes completely as regards it.
Genuine experience. Fish is caught eoth this very ancient method and sold on the spot by local male population. It seems though water is quite polluted.
One of the tourist attractions in Cochin. It is located on the Arabian Sea and one can see big container ships passing by. Good place to buy different kinds of fish. The fishing nets are themselves a sight to behold.
Chinese Fishing Nets.
Maybe the only place we get to see the old Chinese fishing nets. Some parts are now metal while most of it is still made of bamboo. You can watch how they're catching the fish live and also buy the same at the same time. It's a unique experience to witness
A great place to catch some live fish and eat it too. Sadly only a few remain operational. A proposed water metro jetty is likely to reduce their numbers further.
Seeing these Chinese Fishing nets and the way that they work was a great experience. To be able to see locals at their work, buying fresh fish caught in these nets and going about the daily business of life was quite special. This entire waterline area was alive with action. The fishing nets work on a manual set up, but it works so well. There was also a market area near the fishing nets, which is also fun to have a look around.
Close to Kocchi fort is the spot where one can see these ancient fishing equipments. Now days there are not only tools to catch fishes but also a spot for photographers to click pictures of the landscape. The best is when you see these in operations and wonder in ancient time how much skill would have been put in to invent these nets. Lined up at shores these remind of history and culture. When in Kocchi it is a must visit place. Specially in evening. In case one is not able to visit in evening second option is early morning.
Love this place. Local fishermen going about their daily routine fishing with the giant fishing nets. Doesn't feel touristy at all. They also have fish market where fishermen will display their daily catch. Buyers ranges from restaurant owners and locals alike. Must visit place when you are in Kerala or Fort Kochi. No entrance fee.
It’s an amazing place to experience the fishing technique of fishermen. It’s a manual device which seems to work like an automatic machine. I went there early morning to see the entire fishing routine. It’s amusing and you could buy some fish then and there itself.
Absolutely special and an Unique experience to watch Chinese fishing nets in action. The setup is so huge! The whole environment is abuzz with action. People catching fish on one side, regulars buying fish directly at the place and even more so by the ease with which the setup is run.
It is a must-see in Fort Kochi. Known as Cheena vala locally these installations have survived the time and tides and still stands as a proud symbol of the yester years.
