One of the oldest temple in Kerala located at the heart of Ernakulam town, just to the side of maharajas college.

Architecturally a beautiful temple. Be mindful when u go as the door to the main idol room is closed from 10.30 or so for puja it's closed for an hour or may be more.
On enquiring the people said early morning and evenings are best to visit.
I managed to visit in the morning around 8.30 am.
It's very close to the main hub in Ernakulam.

I love it because near the temple there are other temples too. Also opposite the temple there is Dharbaar park we can spend time there.

It is regarding the "Donate" option given on the website. The option is not maintained properly. Since 2017 I am donating money through the option. But, since 2019, I am not receiving any receipt for the payments made. Not knowing that I had been paying for the period between 2019-2020. എറണാകുളം നഗരമദ്ധ്യത്തിൽ പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് ദർശനമായിട്ടാണ് എറണാകുളത്തപ്പൻ ശിവക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഉഗ്രമൂർത്തിയായിട്ടാണ് പരശുരാമൻ ഭഗവാനേ ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ആദ്യം കിഴക്കോട്ടായിരുന്നു ക്ഷേത്ര ദർശനം. പിന്നെ കായലിന് അഭിമുഖമായി ഭഗവാനെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു. കോപം കുറച്ചു ശാന്ത സ്വാരൂപനാവാനാണത്രേ പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് കായലിലോട്ടുള്ള ദർശനം. ഇറയാനാർകുളമാണ് എറണാകുളമായതെന്ന് പറയുന്നു. എറണാകുളത്തിന് പണ്ട് ഋഷി നാഗ കുളമെന്നുള്ള പേരുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഇവിടെത്തെ ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളം ഋഷി നാഗ കുളമാണ്. ധാരാളം കുളങ്ങളും ചതുപ്പും നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു നാടായിരുന്നു പണ്ടിത്. ദേവലൻ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു നാഗർഷിയാണ് ഇവിടെ ശിവലിംഗം വച്ചത് അതിനു പിന്നിൽ ഒരു കഥയുണ്ട് പണ്ട് കുല മുനിഎന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു മഹർഷി ഹിമാലയത്തിൽ തപസ് ചെയ്തിരുന്നു' അദ് ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശിഷ്യനായിരുന്നു ദേവലൻ. മഹർഷി ഒരു ഹോമം നടത്താൻ വേണ്ട വിറകും പൂജാദ്രവ്യങ്ങളും ശേഖരിക്കാൻ ദേവലനെയും മറ്റ് ശിഷ്യന്മാരെയും കാട്ടിലെയ്ക്ക് അയച്ചു. പോകുന്ന വഴി ഒരു പാമ്പിനെ കണ്ട് ശിഷ്യന്മാർ ഓടി. ദേവാലനാകട്ടേ ഒരു കുരുക്കിട്ട് പാമ്പിനെ കൊന്നു. വിവരമറിഞ്ഞ മഹർഷി ദേവാലനെ ശപിച്ചു. നീ പാമ്പിന്റെ തലയും മനുഷ്യരൂപവും ഉളള ഒരുവനായി തീരട്ടേ. ദേവാലൻ ശാപമോക്ഷത്തിനായി കരഞ്ഞു. മഹർഷി പറഞ്ഞു. ഇവിടെ നിന്ന് കുറച്ചു ദൂരം നീ കിഴക്കോട്ട് നടക്കുക ആവിടെ നാഗങ്ങൾ പൂജിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ശിവലിംഗമുണ്ട്. അതു വാങ്ങി തെക്കോട്ട് യാത്ര തിരിക്കുക നീ ശിവലിംഗം ഒരിയ്ക്കൽ ഒരു സ്ഥലത്ത് വയ്ക്കുമ്പോൾ അത് ഉറച്ചു പോകും അപ്പോ നിനക്ക് മോക്ഷം കിട്ടും. ദേവാലൻ ശിവലിംഗവുമായി യാത്ര തിരിച്ചു. മഹർഷിയുടെ ശാപത്താൽ വികൃതരൂപിയായി തീർന്ന ദേവാലൻ നാഗർഷി എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെട്ടു ഋഷി നാഗപുരത്ത് ഒരു കുളത്തിൽ കുളിക്കാനിറങ്ങിയ നാഗർഷി ശിവലിംഗം കരയിൽ വച്ചു. കുളത്തിൽ വികൃതരുപിയെ കണ്ട നാട്ടുക്കാർ കല്ലുമായി പാഞ്ഞടുത്തു. വിഗ്രഹവുമായി യാത്ര തുടരാൻ തുടങ്ങിയ നാഗർഷിക്ക് വിഗ്രഹം അവിടെ ഉറച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതാണ് കാണാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞത്. അവിടെ സാഷ്ടാഗം പ്രണമിച്ച നാഗർഷിക്ക് ശാപമോക്ഷം കിട്ടി. ചേരനെല്ലുർ കർത്താവാണ് എറണാകുളം ക്ഷേത്രം പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചത്. കൊച്ചി രാജ വംശത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാനക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് എറണാകുളം ശിവക്ഷേത്രം. ഈ നാട് ഉണ്ടായത് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിട്ടാണ്. കിഴക്കോട്ടായി പാർവ്വതി ദേവിയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ നാലമ്പലത്തിനു പുറത്ത് അയ്യപ്പനും ഉണ്ട്. ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു പുറത്ത് ഒരു ഹനുമാൻ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രവും സുബ്രമണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രവും സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. നാല് ഏക്കർ സ്ഥലത്താണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം.

As per legends, Arjuna, Pandava prince performs a severe penance to please the lord and on getting pleased he comes to visit the prince along with goddess Parvathi in disguise as Kiratha or tribal warrior. Just before meeting Arjuna, a wild bear which is also the disguised form of Mookasura is seen and same is killed by the lord. A fight occurs regarding the ownership of the death of bear and finally Arjuna is defeated by the Kiratha. Shattered pandava prince makes a siva linga in mud and offers pooja and to his surprise, flowers offered to linga were seen falling on Kiratha, Lord getting pleased shows his original form and blesses him with a divine arrow called "Pasupathasthram "Kiratha moorthy is also worshipped in the temple. After ages a Rishi named Devalan who was cursed by his guru for killing a serpent came. The curse turned his face into the hood of a snake and was called Nagarishi. He can attain moksha only after sustained worship of Lord Shiva as per the guru. After rigorous worship he is blessed with a siva linga which is the same used by Prince Arjuna. Nagarishi comes to Ernakulam and performs poojas with the siva linga and it gets fixed to the ground. On understanding that lord has become pleased with his worship, Nagarishi takes a holy bath in the temple pond and he is relieved from his curse. This siva linga is worshipped as Kiratha moorthy in the temple and based on his request Lord Shiva and Parvathy appears and exists as Gaurisankara roopam in the temple which is the swayambhoolingam. Thereafter lord Shiva is called Rishinagakulathappan and Ernakulathappan meaning Lord of Ernakulam. Powerful deity which removes all the worries and devotees attain moksha. Every year festival is celebrated on January February months and it's a mesmerizing view to see the Elephants decorated with Nettipattam or Elephant Caparison and Panchavadyam at its best. It's a beautiful temple of lord SHIVA. I visited on yesterday on the occasion on महाशिवरात्रि. Number of people came to see rhe lord SHIVA. A long line of peoples is there to see the lord SHIVA. Drum beat is there. Cultural programs is there, like dance and song.
