Interesting to know the history of coir making in the country (which began in Alleppey). There is also a training centre attached to the museum. The souvenir shop should be made better.
This place beautifully tracks the history of coir manufacturing in Kerala. Great layouts and awesome display. It gets a bit too technical with all the machines at one point. But can easily spend 1 hour at this place.
Situated in kalavoor village that is in between alapy and cherthala 9 km from alappuzha u can get the bus from alappuzha Entry tiket 20rs Inside the museum u can see the production of coir and cor products, also u can understand the kerala coir history and all. Guid will explain all the things about coir product's and manufacturing. Timing 9 30-5 Monday holidays
It's a must watch places to visit in Alleppey. It's controlled by Central Government. It has beautiful exhibits of coir made things. It's very creative art made out of Coir. It also has a coir factory which works from Monday to Friday and it's also open for Public to visit the factory during working days. The entry ticket is ₹20 only for the museum and ₹40 for the museum + film show. Make sure u carry ur debit card or credit card because they don't accept cash for the entry ticket. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Good place to spend time in the hot weather day. Has specimens of the Cor items and the machineries used. Also the historical background of the industry is depicted and there is a guide who can explain the concepts. The room with displays are well.arranged and ambience is maintained. There is a suvenier shop to do shopping also. The entry ticket is provided with card payment. No cash payment accepted. Easily spotted from the road.
Could have been an interesting experience to learn practical applications and manufacturing process for a resource so abundant in this region, alongside the history of the use and development of coir machinery.
It all fell to pot though on the admission price for foreigners. For a protected monument like the Taj Mahal, for example, it's understandable to make a concession for locals. For a small museum like this, however, it seems ludicrous that I should have to pay 5x the price of an Indian person for the same experience. There is no explanation for it and, in principle, it seems pointless.
Adding to this, they do not accept cash. Why? Why? So I have to use my debit card and incur further charges from my bank a transaction of this nature? I asked to pay by airtel money debit card, but it was not accepted. Eventually, they took cash.
When inside, we began looking around and very soon, a guide came to show us around. All of the exhibits were well translated, so there was no real need for a guide. We had not asked for one, but we went along with her anyway.
The lady, kind as she was, rattled through each piece with such speed that we were unable to understand what was being said and the tour moved from one thing to the other so quickly so as we were not able to fully digest the information. She was very skilled to be talking away and wasapping at the same time, but about half way through we politely told her that we would continue alone.
The actual factory where women were working was there, but shut off.
We didn't bother with the gift shop and left. Wouldn't recommend it. Sorry.
Set up by the Central Coir Research Institute, this museum offers a fascinating history of the trade and the engineering history of coir fabric. Through exhibits ranging from monuments and local history, one can learn about the role of coir fabric in the life of Alleppey. Definitely worth a visit, particularly because of Ramya, the very resourceful and enterprising guide of the museum.
Must visit. Got to know the importance of coir. The lady guide guided me throughout the museum. It is surely one of the best museums in India. Unique and specific.
It was an awesome experience visiting Coir museum. Everything you will see there will be made up of coconut husk. They have an amazing collection of products made up of jute and coconut husk. One must visit this place when in Kerala.
I felt happy by visiting this coir museum. Because they allowed inside the production place, where we can see manufacturing process. Awesome experience!

International kayar museum, a wow place to enjoy few hours, this type museum you can never seen out side Kerala, god's own country special Coir as per definition is “fibre from the outer husk of the coconut, used in potting compost and for making ropes and matting”. The museum extended the definition in an effort to promote eco-friendly material of coir (as against plastic and other stuff).
While the museum was small, it mainly had two main themes, coir production and stuff made from coir.
This is a government institution. Situates in Kalavoor (Alappuzha). The aim of this institution is to popularise four and coir products. The museum gives us good picture of different coir products and how they are all made. It has an entrance fee of rupees 20 per head. If you use you have to pay Rate 50 for that. Alot of people visits this place.
Unique place. Very few places where one might be able to gather some information about coir processing and products derived from it. The employee accompanying and explaining does it in a wonderful manner. Worth a visit if you are in vicinity.
Not a well known place but do visit if u have time at hand. Coir and it's history and the things made using it are amazing. From old machines to electric ones they are all there on display. Guide available on request. Photography is charged separately.
A guide will walk you through the process of making coir and different products. You also get to see different machines used for the same and many sample items. The display is very well organized and interesting. It will surely temp you into buying some souvenir made of coir!
Nicely managed museum.official staff guides about museum in very effective way.i've never seen any other museum with such dedicated guide who charges none.its a small museum but enough to explain the theme.it needs around 20-25 minutes to visit.
Great place to visit. Very informative, educative and very well maintained. Somehow this was not known to many of the tourists. It shows the products developed out of coir. A must visit for alappuzha tourists. Surprisingly for kids it offers garden to play like slides and swings.
Nice place. Information is very good. Excellent guide. Very cheap entrance ticket. All about history of coir products, how the Bengali Engineers helped the british people start coir processing and made the technology commercially viable and efficient. Hands on workshop. Modern machines. Usage of coir products. There is a small room where coir products are on sale too. Not to be missed.
