Konni Elephant Training Centre in Pathanamthitta
Konni in Pathanamthitta district is among the most prominent elephant training centres in Kerala. It attracts visitors in large numbers throughout the year. One of the major attractions here are the giant wooden cages used to house the elephants. Locally known as Aanakoodu, they can house up to 3 to 4 elephants at a time. The primary focus of the trainers here is to deal with the development of baby elephants that have been separated from their herd or been found hurt somewhere. The elephants are taught to obey specific commands and are taken for special exercise walks in the morning, are given baths and specific diets. At Konni, one gets to observe this training procedure in person. The baby elephants love playing with the guests. Bigger elephants are used for rides around the place. The nearest railway station is at Chengannur, about 35 km away.

Save this for

A place to spend 1- 2 hours while you are in Konni or passing through here. There is good parking space, a small children's playing area and a milma parlour for refreshments. The only disappointment is that even though the place is not clean, the staff will ask you to take off the shoes while entering the museum and exhibit area.

Visited this place few years back and it’s a nice place to visit with family. Especially kids will like it very much as there are quite good numbers of elephants and elephant cubs. Elephants are kept in a hygienic place and seem like they are well taking care of.

This is a cool place. There is a park for children to play here. Then there is the exhibition about the elephant, the materials used by the ancient people to tame the elephant when the elephant religion was broken. There we are shown a study of the entire structure of the elephant. A cage is built there to thin the elephant when it is caught from different places. The whole range of elephants from Kuttiyana to Kompanana can be seen there. Everyone should make the most of this space

Nice place to spend time with elephants.

It’s a nice, well maintained place however i feel elephants should not be chained and should be left in the jungle where they belong.

For a peaceful day trip with family and friends, this is a great place. There is a well equipped play area for kids. A small icecream and cofee cafe. A small museum. A number of calm elephants (but chains are always chains and i wish they were out in the wild, free.) then there are well curated gardens with selected wild indian flora. Happy to see that they decided to stay original instead of going for typical gardening ideas.we can see the love the people have for their work in this place. Clean and well maintained. Happy that i could visit.

Beautiful place to visit. We saw the elephants. Well mannered and polite staff. Clean. Ample parking space.
Not too crowded. Museum is well maintained and nice.

After Renovation of Museum there is a lot of improvement. The centre now stands out to an international level. Please spare 2-3 hrs minimum for an enjoyable visit. Museum is world standard and just like visiting any museum abroad. Museum gives you a lot of information about elephants which is highly informative especially to kids.

Elephants are also looked after nicely. There is a new Elephant arts gallery which displays some of the outstanding elephant arts works, which includes life size models, pictures, craft works etc.

There is small area which displays medicinal plants & it is worth visiting.

Childrens play area is also good but needs some upgradation.

Overall, what this center does is impressive - rescue abandoned or hurt wild elephants and rehabilitate them. It is possible to ride a domesticated animal but you will need to get to the facility early for that. Check with locals regarding details (we couldn't find reliable information anywhere online). You may be a bit unnerved, as I was, by the fact that the elephants are chained, but the mahoots assured us that this was for the wellbeing of the wild animals as well as for our safety till they were fully tamed.

Konni Aanakoodu offers a fun experience to its visitors. The museum set up at the place provides interesting facts about the elephant kingdom. The place is a delight, especially for children. In a short time, you will form a bond with the elephants.

PROS

Visit can be completed in a short time.

Elephant safari is possible.

Eco-friendly place.

CONS

There are no good restaurants nearby.

Children’s play area is in a bad condition.

Online booking is not possible.

Aanakoodu is the name of an Elephant Training Centre in Konni. Aanakoodu literally means 'Home of the Elephants.  Massive enclosures built of wood for the housing of elephants can be seen here. Visitors can view and understand the behaviour of elephants, ride on them and enjoy the scenic beauty. At the training centre, they discipline or train the baby elephants rescued from adverse conditions.  They are taken care of with special diet and exercises.

There are about 7 – 8 elephants at the centre. An elephant museum has also been set up which is a storehouse of information on these mammoths. Visitors, especially children are quite amused by the playful behaviour of the baby elephants. They can even play with the baby elephants. An interesting fact about the elephant training centre is that the elephant dung is recycled to make paper. There are outlets near Aanakoodu for selling forest products like honey and sandalwood

Konni is famous for the elephant training centre since ancient times. The elephants were captured from the dense forests of the western ghats/Sahyadri and brought to the elephant training cage at Konni. There these wild elephants are tamed and trained by mahouts specialized as elephant trainers. These trainers take the help of other tamed elephants.

Konni elephant camp is an eco tourism center and elephant training center, locally known as Anakkood. In Pathanamthitta District

Visited the Konni Elephant Camp on 31st March, 2021.
Fairly well maintained park.
There were five elephants at the camp when we visited - 1 adult male, 1 young male, and 3 females.
Although the animals look well fed and well looked after, physically, it is distressing to see them chained up, unable to move around very much. They have to spend hours together like that.
I think it is high time we, in India, changed the way captive elephants are kept. We can see videos of how captive jumbos are kept in places like Africa and Thailand, on the Internet, and those practices look much more humane. When are things going to change for the giants in captivity - I wonder.

The elephants are kept in their exhibits (five elephants if I’m not mistaken). You have to ask the mahouts to touch or get on top of them.

It's a great place for kids to get exposure to elephants. There were 5 adult elephants and a calf. All of elephants are chained or caged. The elephant rides are only between 9 to 11 am and 3 to 5 pm. Do plan your day if you planning for a ride. They charge Rs 600 for 2 people for a ride for 15 mins.
Entry fees Rs 20 for adults and Rs 5 for children above 5 to 12 years.
There is an elephant museum inside which is not a great place.
Overall one can cover the entire premises in 30 mins.

This place is well know for the elephants. The best part is that there is an opportunity to ride the elephants. My kids had a lot of fun taking a ride on the elephant. It is a well forested place and the elephants are well taken care. The place is not that large but there are other activities around this area.

Not much to see. Just a couple of elephants tied to a rock. Local government must develop this place to encourage more tourists.
Another attraction they have is a room where they play sounds of different animals and birds. Thats all.
You wouldn't want to be here for more than half an hour or so.
I wish to see this place renovated.
