This restaurant in Kannur Onakkan Bharathi, serves authentic Malabar breakfast of Puttus, Appam, Kappa with mutton curry, fish curry. Meals are also available. This is an old style restaurant, name of the restaurant on display board is written in Malayalam so bit difficult to find, but once you find it you can devour delicious food. I am a tourist from West Bengal and recommend this place to food lovers. Also don't forget to have tea to end your breakfast with. Location: Lane opposite to Kannur railway station.
Having been staying here in kannur for the past few weeks, this is my favourite breakfast and lunch spot now. The old chayakkada ambience evokes nostalgia and the tasty food adds to it. The staffs are very friendly and cordial. Tried their famed puttu and mutton, meals and various fried fish, prawns abd squid roast. I must say i am absolutely loving the traditional slow cooked flavours. Rates are quite reasonable too. A must try food spot for foodies visiting Kannur.
I tried their famous Puttu and Mutton Chaps. They were okay but I didn't find them as amazing as people said
I've seen lots of good things about this place on Instagram, but honestly, I've had better food elsewhere. The mutton curry especially was just regular
One thing I really liked about Onakkan Bharathi was the ambiance. They've kept it in the old, traditional style and it's quite nice. They haven't renovated it, and that adds to the overall experience. If you appreciate a classic, traditional atmosphere you'll enjoy dining here.
The restaurant is apparently 86years old and to this day is happily functioning without a name board! Speaks volumes about the local patronage.
We went for breakfast and tried the Kappa and Mutton Chaap, Puttu & Appam with the same combination. Ask for a single piece as the portion is good enough for 1 person.
The atmosphere is typical Kerala “thattu” kada - lively but Laissez Faire. Service is just excellent.
The place is hardly 300 meters from the Kannur Railway station. Also seating is low bar stool and limited, can accommodate a minimum of 30-35 people.
There is no place to park a vehicle, so best walk or hitch an Auto to this place.
Two minutes walk from railway station …classic combo mutton curry and puttu…good food including tea + 2 pieces putt + small mutton curry costs only Rs. 156
I recently visited Onakkan Bharathi, a non-vegetarian restaurant in Kannur, and I was blown away by the food. The restaurant is located in the heart of the city, and it is a popular spot for both locals and tourists.
I had the puttu and mutton curry is a classic Keralan breakfast dish, and it's done perfectly at Onakkan Bharathi. The puttu is soft and fluffy, and the mutton curry is full of flavor.
Alos we had the appam and stew, and it was the best I've ever had. The stew was so flavorful, and the appam was perfectly cooked.
Here are some of the things I loved about Onakkan Bharathi:
The delicious food The excellent service The wide variety of non-vegetarian dishes The affordable prices
Overall, Onakkan Bharathi is a great option for breakfast in Kannur. The food is delicious, the service is good, and the prices are reasonable. If you're looking for a great place to enjoy a traditional Keralan breakfast in Kannur, I would definitely recommend checking out Onakkan Bharathi.
Super soft puttu and kadala at affordable rates. It is one of the oldest restaurants in the heart of Kannur town. The taste was on the mark. The highlight of this restaurant is puttu and mutton curry with pappdam. Table hygiene is a concern. Its because the seats are always occupied.
If you want to feel the traditional ambience and taste this is the right place for you, just 200 Mrs from kannur railway station. Must try Mutton Curry, egg roast and super duper chai.
Tooo bad. As part of our Kannur exploration schedule, we reached this restaurant and tried the breakfast. Points to note 1. Poor hygiene atmosphere (got multiple hairs from food) 2. Plates were not cleaned properly 3. Appam was so hard 4. Mutton was below average 5. Egg roast too spicy with onion only 5. Totally disappointed, first disappointment from Kannur during this 3 days of exploration schedule.
Had puttu, appam and mutton chaps, which was very good. All were served hot which made it even better. Limited seating capacity. Not easy to find. You need ask someone about the place, since they don't have a board
One of the oldest traditional hotel in Kannur, very near to Kannur railway station. They were providing puttu and tender mutton that is their signature dish. Single mutton chops, 2 pieces puttu, papad and chaai costed Rs. 140/. I am satisfied with the service, taste and food quality.
Had puttu, mutton curry breakfast two days ago. It was of very ordinary quality, nothing special about the mutton curry, meat was far from being soft and the single piece in the curry was mostly bone and in a size suitable for biriyani than for a curry to go with puttu. Overall, very disappointed and a let down for all the hype that goes with this place.
One of the oldest restaurants in Kannur with 50+ years of history. The only place in town which serves the signature ‘Puttu with Mutton Chaps and Pappadam’ at 5: 45 in the morning with a glass of hot tea and good old malayalam songs from the 80’s. Its a small traditional Kerala hotel which gives 80’s vibes and with good service. The food may taste average to some but the overall experience surely makes it one of the must try restaurants in Kannur. They have a variety of breakfast items ranging from Puttu, Idly, Upma, etc.and curries like Mutton Chaps, ‘Cherupayar’, ‘Kadala’ and so on. Also serves Lunch which is above average.
Overrated restaurant. Tried putt, mutton curry and kadala curry. Very disappointed. Mutton curry and kadala curry were below Average. (Tasted like only coriander powder added)
Location - On left side of the road Opposite to railway station, KANNUR, KERALA.
There is no Name board.
Its a small very old fashioned building.
They have only limited menu with limited seating.
They serve Puttu, Upma, Appam, along with Mutton gravy, Channa gravy, Green gram gravy, banana, pappad, chai and also lunch with fish fries and fish curry.
Personally didn't like much, only puttu nd mutton chaps u get in hot, Appam nd idli is cold, had ordered mutton chaps nd liver curry, mutton is fresh but the gravy is very watery. As per me not that great except fresh mutton
When I visited there I could see a lot of aged people. I think they are the daily customers. So I can assure that the hotel is well established and popular. The hotel is famous by mouth publicity. But there is no parking area and it is situated near a narrow road which is entering to the Kannur market. The popular dish is "Puttum mutton chapzum".
A no frills traditional restaurant with exceptional food. Simple menu, basic furniture, clean interior, friendly staff, nominal prices, very tasty food. Tried Mutton curry with puttu last week and also with Kappa today, loved it. Authentic, traditional and delicious.
Tiny place which is hard to locate since name board seems to be missing. But tasty puttu and mutton chaps which I believe is available all day since I had it around 4.15pm! Good tea. Very quick service and very affordable. The mutton chaps is simple but very tasty gravy! Go for it if you are around station!
This place has been functioning since long and is pretty famous for limited but mouth watering food. They serve the traditional Kerala puttu along with obvious Kerala curries. The highlight is mutton curry served if required and is available from 0800hrs onwards along with papadam. It's not mouth watering but will please ones who wants simple and spicy non veg breakfast.
Very good food, best place to get breakfast at reasonable price. The combination of puttu and motton is awesome.very tasty food, give it a try.its very small hotel but they have kept it very neat and clean.
Authentic place in Kannur. Experience putt and mutton. Unrefined and fulfilling. Also in menu avilum pazhavum, uppuma etc one of a kind restaurant.must visit place for food lovers.
