Uravu is a bamboo based development organization for rural empowerment through sustainable solutions. They have special training programs and workshops
The place where we were staying at had called an setup a tour at the Uravu Indigenous Science & Technology Study Centre. Boy, where we in for a treat!
It was better than any Ted talk about the glory of bamboo. First, we saw the nursery where Jino (our guide) rattled off the Latin names for a whole variety of bamboos and gave us a great summary for “why bamboo”.
Then we went on to the workshop where we saw bamboo being made into lamp shades and curtains and art pieces and even a no-power natural shaped gramophone which would amplify music from a phone like a speaker (you will have to visit the website or see pictures to see what I mean).
Geetha taught us how to make patterns on bangles by weaving bamboo.
The two shops on site will fulfill all your needs for things for yourselves, gifts for friends and family and snacks and unique foods for the road.
If Bamboo and it's products excite you, this place will be your Nirvana. With products made from bamboo leave you looking at it with awe. From a simple pen, notepad to light fittings which will lit up your place and up your decor game in style.to my favourite the bamboo speaker. The shop is located on the first floor with workshop on the ground floor and a nursery just across the street where you can buy bamboo plants for yourself, if needed Some of the items are so well and beautifully made that the effort and work put into those reflects in their products will make you feel that you are taking home a piece of art. Do visit this place if you are in Wayanad, Kerala. This place is not something you get to experience everywhere.
Brilliant designs and amazing workmanship by the team at Uravu worth the drive. Staff is helpful and accommodating to your needs Loved the lamps, bags purses, trays coasters, etc
Henna and her team are very professional and outgoing. They manage the space well and even conduct guided tours and workshops. It was great to meet Sarang and Sharada too. Good job guys! Keep moving forward! All the love and success to you.
Nice place to visit for purchasing bamboo related artisan work. It’s done by rural women in ground floor and we can see how they do it if you reach before 5pm.
If you are looking for authentic handmade bamboo products then this the place to go for! They have everything ranging from earrings, bags, holders to lamp shade. Rain Maker is lit, totally loved the concept- it makes an ideal gift. Kids as well as adults can enjoy the rain maker.
They have the manufacturing unit at the basement, you can visit their shop on first floor. They also sell their products online.
Loved this place.they do all sorts of stuff which are made of bamboo.including construction.very innovative approach towards bamboo and they do customized items based on orders.definitely recommend them to people who are looking for specific stuff made out of bamboo.
They have light bulb covers made from bamboo, bamboo laptop bags, hanging bags, toys, pens brushes, storage boxes etc all made from bamboos only. Reasonable price. Friendly and polite staff who guides and demonstrate each and every product for you. Nice place.
The place is quite far and the workshop is not well organised for tourists to visit. Getting a 20-25min tour of it is chargeable and it is 250 per person (too costly). The finished products are also on the expensive side.
