This is one of the best place if you want to try traditional Maharashtra food. But the best which is their speciality is Misal Pav & Vada Pav. It is so tasty and quite affordable. The atmosphere is very calm & respectful & the staff is very cooperative. It is 5 min walking from dadar station.
We went inside restaurant after waiting time of 15 minutes, we were shocked to see on two tables of ground floor modaks were kept. They alloted table on 1st floor, where again 3 tables were vacant. After some time our friend who was going to join us on table came outside restaurant. When he came he said there is long que outside and still there were 3 tables vacant. These tables were not even reserved. This is the type of cheating restaurant does which breaks trust of customers. Food is not like before. I dont know why they want us to finish food so fast if they dont want to allot customers waiting for 15 minutes to half an hour. Just to show off long ques to the world.
In life its always said, don’t keep high hopes because if it comes crashing, its hard to handle the disappointment. And that’s what exactly happened when I decided to give it a run after a series of high praises from various famous food vloggers across Instagram. Hopes were dashed and I was smacked into submission. We also had to wait for around 30 mins to grab a table for a not so good dining experience.
Things we tried:
1) Misal Pav (Their record breaker) () :
The Misal had the flavour infused of all the authentic maharashtrian spices but I don’t know somehow it did not have the X factor to stand out. Its was well balanced no doubt but nothing new under the sun. I have had better Misals in Lonavala and Thane tbh. The quantity was average but sufficient for a person. But I was really expecting some skin in the game after all it is labelled as the ‘Best Vegetarian Dish in the World’ but it didn’t live upto the billing at all. Hope for a delectable and flavoursome experience but it just turned sour.
2) Maharashtrian Thali () :
It was too sweet to go with. All the dishes had a sweet taste and they lacked basic taste and didn’t treat my taste buds well. This was quite a let down and I feel this needs to step up to give the customers a good dining experience.
Good place for people who loves mahatastrian food.the ambience is super cool and the food is delicious too must visit this place and try the food whoever loves to taste new things
The place is usually crowded and more so on weekends so either go very early or be prepared to wait for a long time to get in. However, the food is worth the wait.

Firstly, get ready to stand in a long queue for your turn. After 1 hour when you finally get your turn, they serve you food which is sweet I was super excited to try their famous misal pav and other maharashtrian delicacies, but to my suprise it wasn’t what I expected The misal pav was average and the each Maharashtrian dish was sweet as they put sugar into it. After having this “sweet” food, even the sweet i.e. Lockey halwa tasted like a mithai I would suggest please don’t wait your precious time going here! Aaswad destroyed my muh ka Sawad
This is quite old Upahar gruh. But now a days, some food items are not up to the mark. Especially Modaks, very raw outer cover, thick. Inside coconut stuff is also of sub standard. All rough, black remnants of coconut, no soft inner white scraps of it found. That to cold, raw Modaks are served. Not properly boiled. It will loose the fame of real Maharashtrian sweet. What non Maharashtrian will feel? Modaks are not good maharashtrian dish. I hope after reading this, It will be seved hot, soft stuff inside & well cooked.
Aaswad Upahar & Mithai gruh is a hidden gem for Maharashtra food lovers. Their Misal is absolutely divine and the kothimbir wadi are must try delicacies. Also be prepared for crowds because it's that good.
In the heart of the Marathi Heartland, opposite the Shiv Sena Bhavan stands Aaswad. Having born & brought up in Dadar, my tryst with Aaswad dates back to my childhood. It is among the few good old restaurants that are holding still the flag of traditional Marathi [Vegetarian] cuisine high.
Again like many good eateries, it's difficult to easily find a place to sit. During lunch time, this place bursting with activity and is filled to its brim. Ignore the ambience and the cramped sitting arrangement and gear up for the experience that is store when you enter inside.
If its summer time, order the Panhe [a drink made from Raw Mangoes] or Kokam Serbet and Amba Dal [Channa Dal soaked in water overnight, mixed with grated raw mango and garnished with fresh coriander], to begin with.
Recommended Main Course: 4. Pithle with Bhakri 5. Bharli Wangi / Dalimbi Usal [A Maharashtrian Speciality] 6. Masale Bhath
Recommended Dessert: 7. Kharvas [Made out of the fat rich milk of a weaning Cow / Buffalo] 8. Dudhi Halwa [Lauki in Hindi or Bottle Gourd] 9. Modak [Coconut filling encased in a ball made of rice flour, semi conical in shape] - Must have
Wash down the above with Piyush [Thick Sweetened Drink] or Taak [Butter Milk]
The bill will not surprise you, it's a promise.
A request to the management of Aasad, please spread your wings and the goodness of Maharashtrian cuisine to other parts of Mumbai.
The Maharastrian food here is excellent. There is plenty of tables but if you go do during lunch time, there will be waiting for around 10 to 15 mins. But the wait is totally worth it. The washrooms are clean too. There is a lift for those who can't or dont want to take stairs.
Perfect place for Maharashtrian dishes, but always we have to stand in que for the availability of seats. Otherwise it's perfectly nice place to satisfy the test of Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Absolutely fantastic food, ambience and service quality. Very friendly and prompt. Must try their 'naarli bhaat' ice cream, absolutely out of this world.just yummy.
A really pleasant authentic Marathi restaurant. Had missal pav and a thali for dinner, with a falooda for dessert. There were many people bustling about but it was not too crowded, instead the activity just improved the ambience, and makes it homely somehow. This restaurant offers excellent value for money and the taste was top notch. I also had poha and Lassi for breakfast here a few days later, and I can see myself going back to this place even more, if id stayed longer in Bombay. Strongly recommend.
It’s an authentic maharashtrian restaurant and it doesn’t disappoint, the food is phenomenal and the ambience is mesmerising, it’s a must try for all the maharashtrian food lovers out there!
I had to wait a good 45 minutes outside the restaurant as there was a long list of people waiting before me to get inside. But once I tasted the food, every minute of waiting felt worth it. I ordered misal pav, vada pav and special meal box. The taste was just superb. If you want to taste good Maharashtrian food, this is a must visit place for you.
Aaswad is an amazing place for reasonable food. They specialise in Maharashtrian cuisine and it's fabulous! Highly recommended to have the kothimbir wadi and thalipith.
It is located in Dadar next to Shivsena Bhavan. Best authentic food u will get here, because of food quality and service it make popular.it is always full so u need to wait outside for your turn.i tried Misal paav and thali peet it is very tasty.
Ideal place for Maharashtrian delicacies and new innovations.located opposite sena bhavan.parking is not available outside the hotel as it's located on the main road but one can park it in the lane behind.
The best place to enjoy authentic maharashtrian food. Loved every dish I tried here. Friendly staff and hygienic. Very well made and served. Thank you Aaswad for a lovely time and food.
Staple of any maharashtrian person! I'd recommend this place to everyone I know. Delicious Marathi food made with that perfect homemade touch. I'd recommend ever Marathi item in their menu. Make sure you come here with some space cleared in your schedule there's usually a waiting time.
For sure I'd recommend that, batata Vada, sabudana wada, kothimbir wadi, Puri bhaji with srikhand, thalipeeth. 10/10 been going here since 2008.
Too much of waiting with no waiting area. But when it comes to food i don't think any other restaurant can serve such delicious maharashtrian delicacies.
Asswad is a timeless jewel that personifies the typical Marathi man's meal. Simple succinct and sumptuous. The wide variety of dishes are spot on in terms of taste. Most importantly the whole experience is now enriched with the prompt service and soothing ambience offering value for money service. Highly recommend!
Excellent place for Maharashtrian Cuisine. The major attractions are kothimbir vadi, vadapav. The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing. Mithais are good too. The location is at the heart of mumbai very easy to locate. And Piyush a traditional Maharashtrian drink is amazing for Mumbai summer. The prices are not too high too. Overall a very nice experience.
Traditional Marathi Delicacies at its best. I personally tried Kothimbir Wadi, Thalipith and Dalimb chi usal. As a Delhiite place is a treat to tongue and can be enjoyed with takeaways and delivery as dine in is not allowed. Does not accept online payment methods like Gpay, Paytm which is a big disappointment in a city like Mumbai.
Aaswad is our all time favorite. Right opp Sena Bhavan Dadar West makes it easy to locate. Though finding a parking spot is a task. The food here is delicious and utterly satisfying. Aaswad is popular for its Maharashtrian cuisine and they don't fail to live up to the reputation of being the best. I haven't tried other cuisine (South Indian or Punjabi) at this place therefore restrict myself from commenting on it, but every time I eat here I plan to return even before finishing what's on my plate. The servers are courteous and prompt but don't expect them to pamper you. Aaswad maintains high hygiene standards, perfectly okay to take your kids for a meal.
Authentic Maharashtrian Tasty Cuisine. Variety of Fresh Dishes available. Clean and Nice ambience. पुरीभाजी, बटाटावडा, थालीपीठ, दुधी हलवा, पियुष अणि खुप काही. सगळे पदार्थ छान. I Myself, Father and My Family Enjoyed Aaswad, Dadar, Mumbai. BHUSHAN.
Most authentic Maharashtrian cousine, taste, clean, hygenic resto. Only carry on service with limited menu is available at present. Favourite amongst celebrities of all kinds from India and overseas. Waiting period is much longer on normal days, beyond bearable on holidays.
You pick any item and good to go. My favourite 10: 1. Misal pav 2. Sabudana vada 3. Kothimbir vadi (it's Aswad special not the mainstream vadi) 4. Thali peeth 5. Varan bhat with sajuk yup delicious 6. Piyush 7. Kharvas 8. Pithla bhaji bhakri 9. Poori patal bhaji 10. Vada or vada pav
Go and enjoy, it's not the mainstream spicy food. It's very specific to Aswad. Serves for everyone. I have taken people from abroad and they all love it too.
Had been here on a busy thursday afternoon. It was just the 2 of us so we got seated in about 10 min. Ordered the Sankrant special thali, Sabudana Khichdi and Pithla bhaji bhakri. The service was very prompt. The special thali came with masala rice, bhaaji, gul poli etc. The taste was as typical maharashtrian as it gets. Definitely worth a try. Sabudana Khichdi was good. Lacked a bit of spice and didn't have potatoes in it. You will not miss out on anything if you don't have it. The pithla bhakri was great. Made in a perfectly maharashtrian way it came with eggplant curry, dangar, thecha, loni etc. Definitely the takeaway of the lunch.
Would recommend Aaswad to everyone who enjoys some good and authentic Maharashtrian food every once in a while. Try going during the non-busy hours so you can enjoy your food more!
Aswad is famous for delicious Maharashtrian food. Specially Pithla Bhaji Bhakari is very famous. Misal Pav is also good. Everyone must try Puran poli ice cream. Decent ambience with delicious food. Must visit for the taste of Maharshtra.
One of the finest typical Maharashtrain snacks & food oulet. Situated near to the Dadar west station, it's a very small place but quick service & very humble & courteous staff. It's always rush, they have a party hall too. Vada Pav, Kharves, Thali Peet, Pitale - Bhakri is awesome, also try their Diet Meal if you are a fitness enthusiast. They serve number of desserts too, food is awesome & delicious. Beautiful ambience & astute arrangement is their USP. Do not miss visiting if you are around Dadar.
Worst Customer service. For line to Customer they lying with Customer only. Very very third class hotel about Customer service. We are in line about 1 to 2 hrs and when we entered to seat they told us there is no bhakari, rice available. What a great service faltu at all.
Authentic Maharashtrian style food joint like bhakar, jhanak, patal bhaji, Etc, The Best item being Misal Pav which finds a mention and being awarded by an International Magazine.
Waiting in line for more than hour and when we entered the person replied bhakri and rice not available. We understand the rush problem but atleast they should write on board if any food item is got finished. Hotel person replied they cannot put a board because customer will not come then. Very pathetic service. Not reaching to expectations as the name suggests.
Its overhyped for it actually serves. Had gone to this hotel after claims that it has the best missal in the town. Nothing special and i can say there are far better places to have missal pav with more taste and flavour as well as lest cost than this one. Though it isn't bad but just seems to be hyped more than for it can actually deliver.
One of the best Maharashtrian food joints in Mumbai. The new location is nicely done, although it misses the central location advantage of the earlier one. The staff is very courteous. For Maharashtrian as well as non, it's an enjoyable meal always
Must try Misal, thalipeeth, thali, zhunka bhaakri and everything else) Speciality item Puran poli ice-cream seems quite popular
Nice ambience. Maharashtrian simplicity. Good staff. Clean and bright place. Misal awesome. Just no parking for cars. Bikes also to be parked at your own risk.
Went on a Saturday around 5pm. There was a 20 min wait and then we sat in sharing with 2 others. Restaurant was clean and well maintained. Went with high expectations of their missal pav and ordered that along with filter coffee and batata vada. Missal was very good, although not exceptional. Right amount of spicy but could’ve had more flavor. Filter coffee and batata vada we’re both very good! Food is reasonably priced.
Authentic Marathi cuisine, pocket friendly too! Love their extensive menu, good quantity and perfect homely taste. U can have Piyush as a welcome drink, Thalipeeth, kothimbir wadi or sabudana khichdi for starters, varan bhat, pithla bhaji bhakri, or satvik thali for main course and kharvas for dessert! They also serve Bengali sweets. Or if you are lucky enough, you might be blessed with garam ukdicha modak with sajuk toop!
We ordered chapati and sabzi, kothimbir vadi, poha as well as sabudana which was awesome. Misal is not good as you would expect in a typical maharastrian restaurant
An all time favorite. Pure vegetarian Marathi cuisine. Have several innovative dishes like Puran Poli Ice cream. Full AC with very polite and attentive waiters. All this at very economical prices. Just awesome. Beware of long wait times. During 1 pm to 2 pm
Maharashyrian teasty food with different varieties of food. The taste is is good. Quick service with good and simple ambitious. Home made taste. I love it
Only thalipith was good, rest menu is ok ok, go to Aaswad only for thalipith, Misal not as per expectations, gulabjam was very ordinary, I have had better Misals than this,
This used to be a great eating place for Authentic Maharashtrian dishes like thalipeeth, kothimbir wadi etc. Somewhere down the line it has lost the authenticity but to rate it like a regular restaurant I would say that you get good food, nice service, nice ambience and very good hygenie standards.
