Simply superb. My father worked here. The grandeur of this place yet mesmerises many young and old. Post the attacks the hotel has been restored to its former glory with great efforts.

Service has gone down drastically, room service, restruant, and housekeeping. Used to be much much better

Memorable stay, with cheerful staff, lovely view, wished to visit again when price will be low as sometime it's not possible to pay large amount.

Beautiful hotel, on par service, little extra details, gifts were all special. Opposite the gateway of India, walking distance to other restaurants and shops.

Great Experience. Ambience, interiors,  staff, services, etc all over of a top notch quality.

We ordered Parsi Pulao with lamb kebabs in Shamiana Restaurant, it was bang on. The Goan Pomfret tasted authentic and light, rich in flavours and was presented in a way you'd feel like you're eating in a Goan beachside restaurant. The Duck Adaloo was lazily prepared, I personally did not like the taste of it at all. Ordering this was a waste of money. The quantity of every dish was adequate. The restaurant was very crowded, staff was courteous, I would give a 5/10 to the ambience because of the poorly managed crowd. Overall experience was a little better than average.

However, one area they can improve is that getting access to a guest RM or contact person once rooms are reserved it becomes quite difficult. "

International level of infrastructure and well maintained staff/people.
I was a bit disappointed when I saw that in the toilet there was no water jet and only tissues were available as wipes. At that moment I felt angry as well, that when the hotel is in India! It's made in India then why to forget our roots! Alright if the Taj owners want to cater the international audience then add a tissue facility but do not forget your own motherland natives and uproot the jet facility. Everyone is not comfortable to use tissue wipes to clean themselves. It is very unhygienic as well!

Make the changes, this was not expected from The Taj!

The restaurant for both are same. The quality of food is very good, the taste is unique.

They follow hygiene dedicatedly and clean the tables repeatedly. The staff is cooperative and quick in service.

The restaurant has AC section with comfortable seating arrangements. You can find a restroom and a hand wash station.

The dedicated vehicle parking is available.

One of the richest hotel in India. Staff of hotel is good. Truly heritage also. It is the same hotel where 26/11 attack took place in Mumbai. It is also a very nice hotel for tourist and visitors.

Situated near the Gateway of India. It has been amazing experience being there. The staffs and the workers here are so polite and helpful. It has a great view of the Sea and the Gateway of India. The atmosphere of the place is so soothing and mesmerising.

Jamsetji Tata built The Taj Mahal Palace just in time. In the late 19th century, the hotels in Mumbai left much to be desired. They were run down, overcrowded and the one decent hotel in Mumbai Watson’s Esplanade Hotel – was years past its prime. In the late 1890s, Mr. Tata suddenly announced his plans to build a grand hotel that would help restore the image of Mumbai and attract visitors from around the world.
Hispartners were surprised and his sisters, critical. One of them is said to have replied in Gujarati, “You are building an institute of science in Bangalore, a great iron and steel factory and a hydro-electric project – and now you tell us you are going to put up a bhatarkhana (boarding house)! ”

Luckily, Mr. Tata stayed true to his vision and in 1898 the foundation for the Taj Mahal Palace was started. Construction would be completed in 1903. From the day it opened, the hotel was a leader in the city scene. The Maharajas considered it a second home because it was a welcome break from their formal routines, yet maintained the palatial standards of living to which they were accustomed.

This playground of Princes was also a home to the Indian Freedom movement. Jinnah, the future first leader of Pakistan and Naidu, the President of the Indian National Congress, both held court here. In 1947, The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai played host to the legends and architects of Independence and one of first major speeches representing Independent India was given at the hotel.

Eventually the Palace needed some extra room to grow and so the Tower wing was added in 1973. Architecturally different, but in synch with the spirit of the Palace, the Tower added 20 storeys of arches and balconies and began a new chapter in the hotel’s rich history. Now there was even more room to accommodate the endless parade of global who’s who.

This is a luxurious 5 star hotel and if you get a room facing the Arabian sea then you can feel the real beauty of that sea and also you can see the great gateway of India from here. The new taj is just adjacent to it which is called the taj Hotel tower because of its height and when Gateway of India and this taj hotel is seen from Arabian sea it looks great.

I still can't believe I had the opportunity to stay in the most beautiful and Breathtaking hotel in all Mumbai.
At the reception the amazing operation manager Ms Mahtaab p Sidhwa welcome us with a big smile and a worm words.
She upgrade us from the tower to the palace and surprised us with luxurious gifts.
The room was amazing, with a welcome refreshment.

Breakfast is delicious with an attentive service. The employees taking care of you and looking for you with all their heart.
The prices at the restaurants of the hotel was over prices for India. I understand that its a luxury hotel, but the prices is still the prices don't make sense, to pay for dinner more then what we pay for a room, is not appropriate.
As a leading hotels standard's trainer for the last years, I can say this hotel is standing in most of the LHW roles, that saying the hotel put attention for all the details to make the guests happy.

The original building of the hotel was commissioned by Tata. Its doors opened to guests on 16 December 1903.

It is widely believed that Jamsetji Tata decided to build the hotel after he was refused entry to one of the city's grand hotels of the time,  Watson's Hotel, as it was restricted to "whites only". However, this story has been challenged by many commentators who suggest that Tata was most unlikely to have been concerned with 'revenge' against his British adversaries. Instead, the Taj was built at the urging of editor of The Times of India who felt a hotel "worthy of Bombay" was needed and as a "gift to the city he loved" by Tata. [12]

Incredible. Ornate and beautiful. We had high tea and it was amazing. The chai was fabulous, the food went on and on. The desserts will outstanding. And not just delicious but absolutely beautiful. It was such a great experience. We had a table by the window which I recommend if you can get one. Looking out over the water most beautiful and relaxing. The shops on the main level are really great.everyone is very friendly, everything is very clean and very welcoming.

It's okkk. Restaurant feels like normal 3 star hotel.service is very poor.cost is of 5 star hotel. I did not expected that atall.

Place has history. Beautiful scenic view outside your window, phenomenal staff. And the way they spoil you by giving small things is great.

One of the richest and oldest 5 star hotel in India. Many foreign touristers visit Taj hotel as it is near to the gateway of India. There is a big swimming pool inside. It is worthy to visit and for staying also. From here one can get boat for ellora caves which is another famous tourist spot located near to this hotel

I had attended an event here and It was just amazing! I went there for the first time and I seriously couldn't stop bragging about it the entire day! Well look I'm still bragging! The interiors are just so WOW! We were served Masala Tea and Freshly Brewed Coffee with cookies and ofcourse they tasted good! One must go to Taj atleast once! Sharing some pictures!

It was the first Taj property and the first Taj hotel. There are several anecdotal stories about why Tata opened the Taj hotel. According to a story, he decided to open the hotel after an incident involving racial discrimination at the Watson's Hotel in Mumbai, where he was refused entry as the hotel permitted only Europeans.  Hotels that accepted only European guests were very common across British India then. According to another story, he opened the hotel when one of his friends expressed disgust over the hotels that were present in Bombay then. But a more plausible reason was advanced by Lovat Fraser, a close friend of the Tata and one of the early directors of the IHCL group, that the idea had long been in his mind and that he had made a study on the subject. He did not have any desire to own a hotel but he wanted to attract people to India and to improve Bombay.
