Spencer Plaza was built in 1863–1864, established by Charles Durant and J. W. Spencer in Anna Salai, then known as Mount Road, in the Madras Presidency (now Chennai). The property originally belonged to Spencer & Co Ltd. Spencer & Co opened the first department store in the Indian subcontinent in 1895.
Many outlets offer multiple formats for retailing food, apparel, fashion, electronics, lifestyle products, music and books. It is owned by RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group.
It was once a great mall with phases I, II & III build one after the other. It was the largest and most successful mall in Chennai with people coming from all over Chennai. Later new malls were built in different places and people started going to nearby malls. The Landmark book shop used to be my favourite destination during weekends. It used to flourish, but later there was not enough business and the shop was closed. We also started going to nearby malls.
Liked the Place. For Girls There is lot of Shops for Dresses & Handbags you can give it a try. But for Boys you have to Search for the best quality clothes
One of the old shopping malls of chennai. No big brands here. Mostly small shops selling clothes, mobiles, handicrafts, etc. Normal stuff, nothing extra ordinary.
I got introduced to "Don't be tricked by the appearance" on a completely new level by this mall. From outside, I figured that since it was so big, it would be good like similar malls, yet instead, I came across a shopping center with small shops that offered clothes for cheaper than usual. These small shops I stated are not name-brand. There were multiple shops selling a wide range of products, and I even spotted accounting firms and IT companies. Overall, nevertheless, I wouldn't say it was a bad experience. I was able to visit the shops, and they have nice clothing. Other than that, I only plan to visit once.
Spencer Plaza holds a significant place in Indian history as the first-ever mall in the country, built in 1863. It stands as a landmark and a source of pride for Chennai. With its abundance of shops offering clothes, accessories, electronics, gadgets, and jewelry, the mall promises a diverse shopping experience across multiple floors. However, it lacks a cinema and suffers from congested and limited parking facilities.
Over time, Spencer Plaza has lost its former glory. Many of the shops inside resemble street stalls, selling cheap and low-quality products. Some stores attempt to pass themselves off as well-known brands, but their inflated prices do not align with their unknown reputations. The quality of the products often reveals the truth, leaving customers feeling deceived and disappointed.
Adding to the mall's decline, unemployed individuals often gather around the shops, creating an unwelcoming atmosphere. Some shops become meeting places for friends, who freely comment on passing customers. This lack of professionalism and respect further detracts from the overall shopping experience.
Despite its shortcomings, visiting Spencer Plaza can still hold a certain allure for those seeking a sense of history or wishing to document their visit to the oldest mall in India. However, it is important to manage expectations and acknowledge the mall's faded reputation and decline in quality.
As a customer, it is disheartening to witness the deterioration of Spencer Plaza over time. Efforts should be made to revitalize the mall, attract reputable brands, and improve the overall shopping experience. By doing so, Spencer Plaza could regain its status as a cherished landmark and offer visitors a more satisfying and enjoyable visit.
Is one the oldest mall in Chennai. You will find tons of options for mobile covers and mobile screen guards at a cheap price. You can also opt for some shopping of clothes for your daily use if you want to. There are few other shops too like shoes at a good price. There is Mc donalds there too.
The shopping malls has other office premises too. Parking might be confusion for this. But manageable.
Spencer has lost its glory! Used to be a regular visitor when it was at its best. Now all that is left is a few antique shops, track pants and other clothes, phone cases shops etc. But the memories will always remain.
If you want phone cases, temper glasses for your phone this is the place it's very cheap compared to individual shops. Other than that it's a pretty boring mall. It feels like lifeless:
Not much crowded, good ambient, center of city, good place for shopping. Cost is mixed. You can find some items very costly, some usual price just like in other places
W3 used to frequent these malls during our college days. Feel like it lost its glory. Went recently to attend an interview. Had to pay parking for that also. I hope it gets back to it early glory.
Most of the shops will be closed. Can go there if you want cheap clothes like daily wear. Lots of shoe shops and mobile phone tempered glass &cases will be available. Even though there's nothing much, Spencer's will always be an iconic landmark in Mount road.
One of the oldest and all tourists favourite mall in Chennai, will get a2z things here. Budget shops for dresses, wholesale pet shop, Medical’s, cosmetics and mobile accessories etc.
Compared with other malls, its really an old fashioned mall but it provides good shopping options as there are many great places to buy clothes and accessories.
I go here for mainly Mobile Covers and accessories then cheap t-shirts. There's nothing special in this mall except these. There's always less crowd in this mall which makes even more convenient in Covid times.

A mall which has been a monopoly in the early 90's and 2000's.
After the liberalization, Globalization so much of malls such as Express Avenue, Phoenix Mall, Ramee Mall, Marina Mall, VR Mall, which came has a competitors year after year and which has made tuff for Spencer plaza which was shining.
But still Spencer Plaza it's improving the small businesses like who sells local apparels and never lost its shine.
I am sure that again people will visit and like Spencer plaza in the upcoming future.it is the only monopoly with all good facilities a trending Mall with large inside shops, bargain and good quality products Mobile pouches cases and so on a great mall.
Hope you all like my review please provide your views or suggestions to give better review.
One of the oldest and most popular malls of Chennai located in a prime location. Visited this mall after over 15 years. Things have changed a lot over the years. This mall used to have all the top brands known to humanity. Now its not quite the same. Looks more like a Dubai or Burma bazaar now. More of a bargainers turf now. The crowd also has substantially reduced, including the class.
Least quality Mall in Chennai. Very badly maintained. Most of the outlets are remain closed for many years now. Food joints smell gross, I'll never even think about buying any food stuff here. Parking is a huge headache. Entertainment is just 1 or 2 games like VR and net cricket on ground floor. Ground level will be very gloomy.
I would prefer to call poor people mall. If you know bargaining this is best place. Mostly clothes and Kashmiri hand work shops. Also a lot of leather shops. It’s huge but doesn’t give mall kind of feeling. You have macdonallads and sarwanabhavan food joint for quick munching
This used to be the hang out place of the time before 2000. Now it's kinda deserted. Of course the mall is still active and offices are still keeping the place busy. My recent visit was to take an American friend to have South Indian food at SaravanaBhavan.
The glory of Spencer Plaza has faded because shopping giantss like Westside Landmark pantaloons everybody vacated, it gets its glory only from some Kashmiri shops sellers and mobile shops, and garments shops
Used to be one of biggest and favourite malls for ppl for years, but sadly its not that great now and many shops have shut down, very less shops for food too, though there is a shop called paradise biryani which is good money wise and quality wise, lots of roadside dress shops only here now which are of ok quality.
Once upon a time it was the center of attention as a mall. But now holds few shops, most of the shops has duplicate stuff. Most of the part of mall AC doesn't work.
Nice place to hangout with friends and family. A huge mall to look around and buy a few things. Also I suggest them to invite more shops/stores and manage them and the lifts/elevators in a better way.
I visited one of the oldest constructed and famous building in chennai with n number of shop inside it. I brought one nice leather jacket with affordable price. And it is Worthy.
Well.a shopping complex with almost every range of goods.some shops really has good quality and very reasonable price.but all u need is time n patient.haha if u have time I hope ull be patient.peace
One of the ancient mall in charge and the concentration towards this mall is getting reduced. Spencer plaza can concentrate on clean and neat environment
Old yet one the best malls in Chennai. Good parking space available. Not crowded when compared to the other new malls in Chennai. Overall good shopping experience. Shops for mobile accessories are plenty and has a good collection of panels for all phones
Very Old Mall and the building defines the MALL name first time in history.but nowdays it becomes where all the local shops and china products are found here at cheap price.thats also soo good to use.
