Sustenance Farm is a quaint eating place located inside the farm on the edge of Auroville on the Auroville Road. The fare is simple South Indian and straight from the farm. Homemade flavors and really economical. Serve breakfast and lunch. When in Pondicherry do visit.
Pretty expensive for a very basic meal. 430 rs for 2 meals and 1 juice and some curd. Charged 50rs extra for curd. When we asked why, the lady says it is not included in the meal. Only buttermilk is apparently. Why didn't she give us butter milk? Because we didn't ask when we ordered the meal. I wonder what would happen if we didn't ask for rice, maybe we would have just gotten an empty banana leaf. At this price you would expect some organic curd but the lady was using the 20 rs curd packet you can buy at the market. Only saving grace of the meal was that the food did not taste bad. Might not go back with this kind of service
Possible the best South Indian food around Auroville. Tasty home food with farm fresh vegetables. The kazha kuzhambu is amazing. What's great is you can get red rice. It's a quiet place to sit. They serve big amounts as well.
We ate thali there 3 times, each time it was very good. Highly recommended. Taste of home cooked food. But take into account it's not a typical restaurant but rather a canteen on a farm. They take care not to waste food and if you come 30minutes before closing time, you may not get all items (but still get a lot of food, so you won't leave hungry).
Yummiest, healthiest, colourful food served on banana leaf with so much of love. A highly recommended vegetarian food. All juices are very fresh. Apparently most of food is grown in there sustenance farm
One of the worst experience in a veg restaurant in near future…. Had lunch with my parents from this restaurant, taste was pathetic, not well cooked, we have to ask for items part of the meals separately, buttermilk, rasam etc is part of the meals but served only when asked, on top just for a meals with 3-4 items we have to pay Rs. 150.
Altogether the Pondichery trip was fully spoiled coz of this one restaurant
The South Indian thali for lunch was great, with traditional Tamil style food. It was good to know that all the produce came from the adjoining organic farm. However, it can become hot in the outdoor seating area.
Having lunch here is an experience. Served in banana leaf, organic home food to relish. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Could see non Indians eat their food with hand, take the banana leaf and put in waste basket and also drop the glasses in the tray. The food is very yummy and good on the tummy.
Down to earth place, good quality simple organic food straight from their farm produce. Served on banana leaf. However the serving staff was not particularly warm or welcoming. It's not that kinda place where they train the staff for customer service etc. But I'd go there for the food for sure
Abysmal treatment of people who visit to eat there. The man there actively ignores customers when they ask for servings unless they speak Tamil. The irritable man also, upon being asked as to why he went out of his way to serve others, he said "Be quiet, being angry is bad for health". Awful experience. Would never set foot there again.
Sustenance is truly a dependable place to eat: we ate brunch on DIWALI, and were so thankful that Sustenance was, as ever, open for a hearty, healthy, happy organic meal We enjoyed the simple fare, choosing Pongal and Idlis+Vadai, with Chai—and this is exactly what we had been looking for, driving around Auroville, seeing what places were open on DIWALI. As ever, the owner + wife were busily working, friendly and helpful. This truly is one of Auroville’s well-loved places to eat! South Indian fare is served on banana leaf, with refills readily available. They also sell organic items from their farm
One of the best place for healthy and affordable lunch in Auroville. The food is easy to digest, straight from the farm. The red rice and sambar, kolambo is too good.
South Indian vegetarian food is excellent. Food is served on a banana leaf with a warm smile. Staff is outstanding. Never miss to have lunch here when at Auroville.
Great place to have a simple south Indian meal "Saapadu" the price is honest for what it is. Simply.rice, Sambar (lentil souce), Caramcorumbu (hot sauce to put on Rice) and (Moor) Butter-milk, Papad, Mango Pickle. Yes simple but worth it. Their effort to make clean affordable food is really appreciated.
Healthy & tasty meals. We felt light & energetic even after a full meal. The person incharge was kind enough to send one of the staff to his house to fetch some coconut oil I desperately needed to soothe s painful mouth ulcer. He could have easily said he did not have it. That kind act was beyond his call of duty & am ever grateful for that and for the great food.
