The Gateway Hotel Pasumalai, Madurai

We stayed at the Gateway for two nights. First off, the location gets 5+ stars - great views, away from the hustle and bustle of Madurai. Being a Taj hotel, I expected a bit more in terms of quality - the rooms are a bit older and don't feel like they have been maintained well. Perhaps antiquity is something they are going for, but that needs to be balanced with modernity. For example, the bathroom taps are very old and leak a bit. The switches in the rooms are ancient and I also found very few switches all over the place.

Had high expectations for this hotel based on reviews found online. Unfortunately was completely disappointed.
- Restaurant is the biggest issue, the food is served very late and ordering food via room service usually results in reminding them 2 or more times.
- Ambience is good, but the staff members are junior. For example, during breakfast I asked for restroom/washroom and the service staff had no idea and asked me to go back to the room. There is a bathroom adjacent to the restaurant.
- The bathroom in the restaurant is not lit well and the door doesn't close properly.
- I gave 2 stars for its location and ambience. Other wise this place is not worth the stay.

The hilltop location provides nice views of the entire city including the Meenakshi temple’s gopurams.
We had the buffet for dinner. While the spread was limited, the food was delicious. We loved the curries and paysam.
The staff is courteous, and service is friendly- something that makes Taj stand out.

Historical building constructed on top of hill in British times 1878 and surrounding with greenery.

One word to describe the hotel is beautiful. Very nice place to stay. The cloudy climate added to the nice experience. The rooms were clean and neat. Place is surrounded by peacocks, they mind their own business. The pool, restaurant and indoor play were good. We enjoyed our stay there. Nature is very pleasant with full of birds and fresh air. Very good place to stay for a short period.

Nice hotel. Service is amazing. Rooms are spacious and the hotel is centrally located.
