Unearthly experience when you visit it during puja. Full of ancient Bengali past, Banediana still has its mark on every brick, time seems to stand still here, the Thakur Dalan here hears the lost stories of Bengali babu of the past century, veiled housewives, dhoti Punjabi, horse carts and pulled rickshaws.
This Badan Chandra Roy house is one of the Banedi houses of Bengal. People come from far and wide to see this puja for the amazing Durga Puja and light show.
I had been there on Saptami morning 2022 with my friends. We were taking picture of the idol. Suddenly a man came and asked whether we read the board outside the gate or not. We were surprised to know that photography is prohibited there. I had never encountered such odd thing before. My experience is not at all good. So from my side
It’s a bonedi Bari but unlike others, my experience with them has been otherwise. It’s a family affair and they won’t even allow you to look at the deity. An impolite guy kept telling us and others to step down and clear the arena and the entire area ahead of the Pratima was sealed. Overall a bad experience. Probably should close doors for outsiders instead of such behaviour.
You will only be allowed if you are with the press promoting their house and singing praises of their pujo. If you are an historical architecture enthusiast, you will be faced with the crude impoliteness of the owners.
The Durga Puja of Badan Chandra Roy or Badan Chand Roy's house in Aparisar Gali in Kalutola area of Kolkata is next in the list of traditional pujas in Kolkata. This house is a little different in architectural variety. There was a spacious courtyard in front of the main Thakur building, and the courtyard was surrounded on three sides by various parts of the house. Within the courtyard another courtyard has been built around with railings. There are small white pillars in between the railings. Their upper parts are painted red. And on top of that there is a light pillar with cast iron decoration. Gas lights used to be lit here. Even during the puja, the former round light row is lit. The Tagore building of this house has five arches. Ascending the stairs, first the main building, within another building is the sanctum sanctorum - where the goddess is worshipped. Their Durga Puja is very old. Although the exact date of its commencement is not available. Badan Chandra Roy started the Durga Puja in this house in the Kalutola area around 1857, although the family's pujas began much earlier, although the pujas were then held elsewhere. On the day of Ultorath, structure puja is done here. And it happened on the next day of Mahalaya on Shukla Pratipada Tithi. The idol of Ekchala, the former Bengali idol, is decorated with silver mail. The color of the lion is silver. The color of Durga, Lakshmi and Kartika is raw yellow, Saraswati is white and Ganesha's body is red and his face is white. Fruit rice and sweets are offered here every day. Luchi, kachuri, various types of vegetarian curries like chicken kalia, patal dolma etc.are enjoyed. 108 lamps are lit in Sandhi Puja, special offerings are rice and sugar.
We visited today a beautiful decorated heritage house Durga puja at Kulutola. The house belongs to Sri Badan Chabdra Ray. It is a palatial building and very well maintained. We are feeling very fortunate to get the opportunity to visit such well-known heritage house from inside and meet their family.
One of the most picturesque heritage houses of Kolkata. The owners are so well behaved and you will never feel outsider. Loved every minutes which we spent there
Worst behavior from family members for taking Maa Durga's photo.
It was a good experience to go there in the day of Durga Pooja. It is an ancient Durga Pooja, worshipped in Kolkata. They have well maintained their building.
My friend's house so I had the opportunity of visiting it. Its a huge mansion and parts of it are very well maintained. This place has a different feel to it, it takes u back in time.
