Great place for South Indian food. Great variety of food, nice ambience, not crowded, a bit pricey but quality of food is good. Parking spaces near the restaurant.
The city's most expensive South Indian food is available here. But the quality of food is not up to the mark. One Gariahat footpath South Indian stall is very cheap, testy n hygienic also.
I wanted to have a crispy paper masala dosa. So searched for near by eateries. Then I found 'Banana Leaf' as one of the highly rated places nearby. I went there after confirming whether they are open for dine out or not. Yes they were, lots of cool comfortable tables. Chilled AC and Fan made my small waiting for jumbo dosa pleasant. Then in a big big plate it came along with four colorful eye-catching friend. Red roasted Garlic & Tomato chutney, Bright Yellow Aloo Masala, White coconuts chutney, Pale dark yellow sambar.
Unfortunately apart from the crispness of the paper dosa none of the accompanying are tasty enough to justify the hefty price tag. Aloo masala was too blunt, full of big chunks of simple boiled potato. Coconut chutney doesn't look fresh & water content was too much. The red chili garlic tomato was good and sambar is full of water with no taste at all.
But I must appreciate the helpful staff for his prompt n fast service. He served dosa and filter coffee with in 5mins. But he was unaware of the special dishes of them. All together 1* for him and 1* for the crispy dosa.
Points to improve, taste and quality of the dosa, masala and chutney.
An early lunch at Banana leaf. There was no one at the space at the time. I had a quick meal which was really delicious and the chaas very refreshing. A walk in the lane on which banana leaf is situated a tree in yellow, in full bloom. This yellow flower is of importance during the new year for South Indians. A perfect feel of Kerala in the city - sight and taste.
Nice place conveniently located at Southern Avenue. The place is pretty big and modestly furnished- they have large windows through which you can have a good view. The dosas are delicious and so is the filter coffee. The staff are efficient as well as courteous. Prices are standard. Loved it and will visit again.
This place is the same in terms of food taste as Komala Vilas but not as vibrant as the other. V quiet as the footfall is far less. Ideal for those looking for a combination of great south indian food and peace n quiet!
It's a beautiful place to have authentic south indian food. The tea is just amazing. Dosa. And small ghee idli is just delicious. They also serve special thali which have lots of flavor in it. But the place is often crowded as the qualities of food is very good. Opposit of lake mall. Must try once.
I always love going to have buffet on special days. Otherwise their big dosas also attracts a foodie like me. Good taste, good food. Thanks for the South Indian food buffet. I love the kesar halwa. It’s very yummy. Also try their chai (tea). The food quality and quantity they serve per plate is pretty good. And can be enjoyed by kids as well as adults and old people. Food is non spicy and non greasy.
They have a special menu which they don't provide unless you ask for it. I took the 1st one on that (forgot the name)
It was dosa for 150rs (i think) + 35rs for extra cheese and it was worth every single buck. Very good taste, the food is usually okayish but this special menu is good.
The ambience isn't very great as the restaurant is usually empty (cuz the taste n service was terrible when it had newly opened) but it's come a long way since then. People should give this place a shot. Heads up, the place is a little pricy for South Indian but the taste makes it worth it.
Spacious place with cordial staff behavior, but one should visit solely for the food. Unlike South Indian Street food, this place has a touch of authenticity. Ultimate stop for South Indian food lover.
Bad service, tasteless food with no proper flavour. They put milk in Dahi vada and white chutney was tasting like milk. Podi idli was not what podi idlis are famous for. They charged us for red chutney which is complementary in most places. Banana Leaf opposite Lake Mall is so much better than this branch that it can't be described. We were taken for a ride in this Branch. Please avoid visiting this branch!
A good place to enjoy South Indian delicacy in Kolkata. The place is clean & hygienic with decent ambience. A large variety of preparations are available on the menu for us to choose from. One must try the paneer onion butter masala dosa which I found quiet unique. Service can be a bit slow. Conveniently located opposite Vivekananda Park with ample parking space.
I am visiting this place for long time. But suddenly, Specially Vivekananda Park outlet is worst. Their quality of food detoried like any thing. Don't try to taste Sambar dal. That's a massive detoriation I felt. Ambience is good.
Podi butter masala dosa was like subtle version of Indian magic masala Lays powder is sprinkled over masala of dosa. So neat presentation and ambience of the place is so fresh and sanitized. The stuff is well behvaed which is becoming rarity these days.
Worst service and food is stale and smelly This restaurant in not the original Banana leaf. If want to go to Banana leaf try the 1 at 75 Rash Behari Avenue
Really good South India at an easy to reach destination. Serves up all the standards at good prices. Service staff were prompt and courteous. My one complain would be that the dining area was cramped and not necessarily all that great on decor and ambiance. Kinda felt like a cafeteria, but at least the food more than made up for it.
