Tarun niketan taken excess money for food.taken money but not given the food properly.very bad experience….

Costly all items, Frist time i am experienced, that charges banana leaf rs 10, i eat rice with duck egg curry, dal, and chachari, total amount rs 310 including 500ml local brand water bottle.

We had Bhetki paturi, which didn't have the expected acridity of mustard, but was tasty none the less. Also had giant shrimp curry, which had a generic fish curry flavour but the shrimp itself was cooked well.
We had the food during Durga Puja peek demand hours. It felt like some time and cost cutting methods were applied which creates the difference between Great Bengali food and Mediocre Bengali food. I would still recommend this place for a different type of dining experience than the usual posh restaurants that are so widely available.

I went last Saturday. I ate a chital fish belly and a hilsa fish. Very disgusting. Hilsa fish was giving off a rotten smell and I didn't understand whether I was eating Chital fish broth or Rasgolla juice.

Food was average.mostly overpriced. The sitting arrangements are clumsy. The place doesn't have a clean look even the are for washing hands has a peculiar smell of rotting food.all in all food the place average

Overhyped nowadays due to media and social media.
If I was talking about 10 yrs back, most of the times it was empty then.
The taste of the food is mediocre but items especially fish are unlimited.

Food is too tasty but the cost is little overpriced. Rest it is fine. The restaurant is not too big and not clean enough.

Food quality is okay, nothing to remember. But price for simple veg thali is just absurd. Paying 120 for a simple veg thali in the heart of the city and that too in a shabby place like this is quite unreasonable. Yes, it can be paid, if the taste is overwhelming. But sadly it isn't. So definitely not recommended by me.

Here in review sections you can clearly see people have a common issue i.e. Over pricing. Rather than giving serious focus on cost, owner will try to browbeat with unsavory comments. It just shows the whole idea behind over charging. Oh yes, it's a street side filthy place. It doesn't matter to a charlatan as long as they get people.

Me and my husband got to visit this place last week.
I had heard from my husband about positive reviews of this place and he used to visit from JU during his masters.

However, this visit turned negative atleast for us.
The items are over priced.
Quality is okayish. But the Chitol mach we ordered was stale. As soon as we told them, they kindly replaced fish with some other item.
Hygiene and cleanliness is big time compromised here.

Overall, I would not visit this place any more.it is over priced

This classic old Pice Hotel near Kalighat Metro station is probably the best of its kind in Calcutta. If you are looking for very light food then this could be your destination. Foods are awesome, they don't even use onion/garlic in any dish which makes all the dish very light.you want to taste homely food In a environment like 70-80's Kolkata then you must visit this place once.
Hotel Tarun Niketan is known to be a 104years old pice hotel in Kolkata where time stood still. If you ever want to taste that solely bengali cuisine within affordable price this is the place you are looking for.
Its a basic hotel for excellent Bengali food. People can sit inside to eat or pack their food, whichever is convenient. I would recommend this small but yet very interesting place to everyone.

I had mutton er jhol and bhaat.mutton seemed too sweet, i guess they add water while reheating the mutton.not going there in any chance next time

Some of the dishes are good but most of them are not served hot. Fish items are good but stay away from chicken curry. Also the tables are not cleaned properly.

I have seen videos of this hotel on YouTube. Rave reviews. Has been on my bucket list for a while. Last week dropped in for a reality check. Old world charm.

Family friendly ambience and pocket friendly food. More than 100 years old pice hotel is near Kalighat Metro. I tried shutki for the first time and the preparation was one of a kind. Banana leaves are served as plates. Would visit again.

This eating house stands tall among the newgen bengali restaurants. Authentic homestyle bengali food at honest price. I would recommend someone to try the exotic bengali dishes like mocha, thor, machher dim, murighonto, kochu pata, bhaja, exotic fishes. The added pleasure is eating out of a banana leaf. Very famous Pies hotel where many famous persons used to eat. Quality and quantity is fine. Simply bit overpriced. Customer dealing should be improved. Cleanliness is an issue around kitchen and tables. Looks a little shabby.

Overhyped place due to YouTube. Nothing extraordinary. Price is too high compared to its taste and portion. And the end they will tell you the total price but didn't provide the breakups. Item name and amount is written in board but honestly Doctor's handwriting were easy to decode than this. Even Swadhin Bharat Hindu Hotel provides breakup bill although their food is awful. Also fans are not working properly and it was suffocating inside. My final bill was almost 1500/- and I have strong feeling that I wasted it. I should have visit other mainstream Bengali Restaurant may be it cost me more but at least won't left the place with such feelings.

Holds the century long heritage of the place and the quality of the food. Welcoming and friendly staff. Recommendations were splendid. My favourites during my visit were the mutton kasha, tangra jhalde, and macher dim er bora. Considering we were 8 adults, the bill amount was amazingly surprising as it was unbelievably cheap. All thanks to the whole staff at Tarun Niketan. May this heritage preserving pice hotel keep its century long name and fame going on and on.

It's a great place. The ambience isn't that great. They have tried to maintain the place as it was since the 1900's. If you're looking for authentic Bengali food this is your place. The mutton is a must try.

This pice hotel is over 100 years old. Truly nostalgic to visit this place. Food is truly delicious

This pice hotel can easily beat any expensive bengali food giant of the city as far as taste, quantity, price are concerned. We took rice (4), biulir daal (2), jhurjhure alu vaja (2), ilish macher matha diey kochur saak (2), bhetki paturi (3), katla macher jhol alu fulkopi (3), Mutton (1). All cost just 1185/-. Paturi was perfectly alright. 4 pieces of mutton were there with two pieces of large sized aloo. Katla peti was as big as my palm. Aluvaja was crispy enough. The quantity of rice was more than sufficient for a single person. Over all this place is a must one to visit for those who want to have bengali food with reasonable pricing.
One of the best pice hotels in South Kolkata. If you want to have home like bengali foods then this place is a must visit one. All their foods are very tasty and worthy of price. This hotel provide best quality foods at a reasonable price. Highly recommended foods include macher matha dia bandhakopi, macher matha dia kochur sak, muri ghonto, macher matha dia chenchrua, mochar ghonto, bhetki paturi, ilish mach, chingri malaikari.

Food was not tasty. Ordered rice, dal, kochupata diye ilish matha, chicken, katla macher jhol and pomplet mach. Katla macher jhol was like warm water no taste. Pomplet dish was not at all delicious. Only liked plain rice.

Hello people! Tarun niketan is a great place to have authentic food but I would seriously recommend to ask the prices of all the delicacies before you hop on.

This mistake costed me 2k.

They serve various Bengali dishes. The cutlery is of stainless steel of various sizes. Main rice is though served on banana leaf. Portions are different. Price is on higher side. Sitting arrangement needs total make over.

Really good food. And a great old looking hotel. But the cost is little high. But you will definitely get quality food.

I didn't have my lunch here after seeing the space. Very bad interior and unhygienic. Cleanliness is absolute zero. From the dining area you can see the kitchen which seems to be in a dilapidated condition with no hygiene. I was about sit down for my lunch but ran out immediately. Menu is very good but if hygiene is not there what's the point.

If anyone wants to experience complete বাঙালি food this is the place. If you're planning for lunch then come early within 1pm.

An authentic bengali pice hotel. Each brick of the brick has so many stories and events to speak. Serving bengali food for over a 100 years, this place us liked by those who love home style, light food. Remember, the food is light, it is healthy, not rich. The prices are reasonable and staff behaviour is polite. Food is served on Banana Leaves, Sal Leaf Plate and steel bowls. Despite how it looks, the place is hygienic.

Too much expensive! Hatari, Gariahat is less expensive than Tarun Niketan. Price is not worthy! Most third class pice hotel. Never visit!

I am visiting this place for quite a long time now whenever I come to Calcutta and am near Rashbehari Area I surely eat out here. Typical bengali flavour, spices are mild compared to Swadhin Bharot, great variety. I love simple homestyle mutton curry here although they have lots of fish also available.

Traditional Bengali Cuisine with old memories. Wonderful recipes like Murighonto, Kachushak with macher matha/ sometimes with illish macher matha, bhetki macher kanta chochchori or Simple Dal & Macher Muro curry are sooo finger licking. Mutton & Chicken curry is simply cooked not so spicy. Fish option depends on market availability. One of the best value for money

Location is very popular place, 6 mts walking from Rasbihari More, south calcutta, it is on the main road. Food quality is very good, specially designed for for bengalee khana, varieties cooked fish items are available with Mutton, only back point is, the entire hotel and food place are not healthy, it is cleaned but not up to date, washing place is not good for health also no toilet for gentleman use.

AC'r আরামে ভরা হালে তৈরি হওয়া রেস্তোরাঁর পাশাপাশি আমাদের কলকাতার মতো শহরতলীতে খুঁজলেই পাওয়া যাবে প্রাচীন ঐতিহ্যে ভরা সাধারণ বাঙালিয়ানা সম্পন্ন কিছু পাইস হোটেল।
যার মধ্যে অন্যতম হলো হোটেল তরুণ নিকেতন। 1915 সাল থেকে ধারাবাহকভাবে আমাদের সাবেকি বাঙ্গালী খাবারের স্বাদ পরিবেশন করে চলেছে দক্ষিণ কলকাতার লেক মার্কেট এর কাছে অবস্থিত এই তরুণ নিকেতন। কলাপাতার উপর পরিবেশন করা বাটা মশলা দিয়ে রাঁধা এখানকার বাঙ্গালী খাবার খেলে ঠাকুমা বা দিদার হাতের রান্না মনে পড়ে যেতে বাধ্য। আরো একটি অবাক করা ব্যাপার হলো এই হোটেলটি তাদের কষা রান্না ছাড়া আর কোনো রান্নায় পেঁয়াজ ও রসুন ব্যবহার করে না। এবার সরাসরি চলে আসা যাক আমাদের আজকের পেট পুজোর আয়োজনে।
আমরা যা যা অর্ডার করেছিলাম সেগুলো একটা বিশাল থালা তে সাজিয়ে একজন কাকু খুব আতিথেয়তার সাথে সব গুলো পদ গুছিয়ে নিয়ে এলেন।
প্রথমেই কলাপাতায় সাজিয়ে দিল একটু নুন, এক টুকরো লেবু, লঙ্কা আর পেঁয়াজ।
এবার নাহয় একটু খাবারের স্বাদের বিবরণ দিয়ে বলা যাক।
১. মুগ ডাল ও ঝুরঝুরে আলুভাজা: একটা dealdly comnination। একদম বাড়ির স্বাদ। মনে হয় মায়ের হাতের বানানো।
২. উচ্ছে আলু ভাজা: জানি এটা ঠিক বাইরে খাবার মত পদ নয় তবু একটু তেতো দিয়ে খেতে শুরু করলে পরের খাবারের স্বাদ আরও ভালো পাওয়া যায় বলে দিদার মুখে শুনতাম। তাই আর কি।
৩ মাছের ডিমের বড়া: batter দিয়ে ভাজা। মন জিতে নিতে পারেনি।
৪. আলু পোস্ত: আহা। টুকরো টুকরো আলু, অল্প ঝিঙে আর অনেকটুকু পোস্ত দিয়ে বানানো। এটা ছাড়া যেনো আমার বাঙ্গালী খাবার অসম্পূর্ণ।
৫. ভেটকি পাতুরি: এই পাতুরি টা যে এতটা
ভালো হতে পারে সেটা আমি ভাবিনি। একটু smokey flavour সাথে fresh ভেটকি মাছ ও সর্ষে। বহুদিন মুখে লেগে থাকবে।
৬. হাঁসের ডিম কষা: খুব ভালো বলবো না। কিন্তু ভালো।
৭. চিংড়ি মালাইকারি: ২ টি বেশ মোটামুটি size এর বাগদা চিংড়ি। বেশ মিষ্টি মিষ্টি gravy। বেশ তৃপ্তি করে খেলাম।
৮. পাবদা সর্ষে ঝাল: বেশ বড় আকারের fresh pabda মাছের ঝাল। আহা আহা!
৯. টেংরা মাছের ঝাল: এই ঝাল টা personaly আমার বড্ডো ভালো লেগেছে। দুটো ছোট্ট ছোট্ট (একটায় আবার ডিম ছিল) টেংরা মাছ। এটা specially recommended.
১০. মটন কারি: পয়লা বৈশাখ উপলক্ষে খেতে যাবার উদ্যোগ আর বাঙালির মটন থাকবে না সেটা কি আর হয়! আর এই মটন তো আর মটন না যেনো তুলো! মুখে দিলেই গলে যাবার মত। বড্ডো ভালো।
১১. আমের চাটনি: শেষ পাতে এটা না হলে পুরো খাওয়াটাই মাটি হয়ে যায়। কচি ছোট্ট আম দিয়ে তৈরি মিষ্টি চাটনি। কয়েকটা পাঁপড় পাওয়া গেলে জমে ক্ষীর হয়ে যেত।

এই গ্রীষ্ম কালের ঘাম ঝরানো গরমে এরকম একটা পুরনো AC ছাড়া পাইস হোটেল এ খেতে যাবার সিদ্ধান্ত টা নিয়ে খুব e Pessimistic ছিলাম। কিন্তু আজ খেতে গিয়ে বুঝলাম কেনো বছরের পর বছর মানুষের মন জয় করে আসছে এই তরুণ নিকেতন নামের পাইস হোটেলটি। দাম ও খুবই কম এবং খাবার সত্যিই অনবদ্য। মন ভালো করা।
এই নববর্ষের শুভদিনে যান একবার তরুন নিকেতন এ সপরিবারে প্রাচীন বাঙালিয়ানা তে ভরা কিছু পদ খেয়েই আসুন। আশা করি ভালো লাগবে।

One of the best places to experience traditional and authentic Bengali cuisine. Highly recommended.

Location is very good, 5 mts from রাস বিহারী more, on the main Road. Items are very very attractive and tasty, specially menu for Fish are varieties, vegetables also good cooked ant tasty. Behaviour of staff are very friendly. Only minus side is inside decoration is not updated. Mostly বাংলা foods, like, fish, Mutton, vegetables are available.

It's known as a live hotel.though they charge for everything that you take.from rice to pulse to plate and even water glass.they charge for everything separately.and foods are enough spicy.so no homely food. I would rarely recommend this place to anyone

It is a good place for budget bengali lunch. Very simple but tasty food. And it's a healthy food option.

In my attempt to revisit the iconic restaurants of Kolkata (preferably 100 year olds) I went to a pice hotel named Tarun Niketan at 1B Rashbehari Avenue.

Pice hotels are eateries where each item is individually priced from the banana leaf on which the food is served to the lemon wedge along with the food items that you order.

Tarun Niketan was established in 1915. Time has stood still here since then. It is a humble, nondescript hotel serving extraordinarily low-priced, home style authentic Bengali food to a vast range of client base, from various strata of society.

We had ordered aloo uchchhe bhaja, bok phooler bora, machher dim er bora, chingri maacher bora, katla machh bhaja, mushurir daal, bhetki machher paturi, ilish machher jhol, pathar mangsho and paid around ₹680.the ‘machher dim er bora’, ‘chingri machher bora’ were as large as the palm of my hand.the mutton was soft, succulent with a big piece of potato exactly like it is cooked on Sundays in a typical Bengali home.had to skip chutney since we were too full.

There were many other items for which we will have to visit again.like aloo posto, ilish machher matha diye kochur shaak, peyaj koli diye morola machher chochhori etc etc.

Location: Beside a fruit stall, few steps after the first lane on the right, while going from Rashbehari More to Lake Market is the entrance of the hotel on the main road with the name properly displayed, though the actual hotel is a bit inside

It's a paice hotel (means only rice servers unlimited here). Foods servers here on banana leaf (they count the cost of Banana leaf and glass for drinking water, who did that?). Foods are just ok. Less salt and spices. Ideal for people suffering stomach diseases. Having tradition over 100 years but still very untidy. Table and chairs are so small you can't sit here comfortably. Wash basin is the worst. Smelt so bad you gonna vomit there. I think if they want to keep there tradition they need will power to keep it going.

It's a pure Bengali and pice hotel. All dishes are quite cheap. Fish dishes are special and delicious

Hotel Tarun Niketan is a 106 year Pice Hotel which still serves food on Kolapata (Banana Leaves). This is a part of series on decades old pice hotels of Kolkata and they still serve freshly made food from catch of the day and usually serve at cheap prices as compared to any restaurant.

Simple Interiors, Wooden Marble Tables, Old Plastic Chairs, Hand written rate menu black board on wall with white chalk will give you an idea of the antiquity of the place, Home like food at very low prices and also they've a wide range of authentic bengali delicacies that will definitely tantalize one's taste buds.

Also, their dishes have “NO ONIONS” – every food item is made without onions and garlic apart from the Fish, Meat and Egg preparations.

One of the heritage eateries in Kolkata since 1915. Awesome comfort food. The sitting is clean and hygenic. The owner Mr Arun Deb is very friendly and shared how things worked at the time of pre-independance and at the time when he took over in 1980. As per my experience, the mutton curry is a must have.

It's basically a pice hotel, you to have to for foil, glass etc. Quality of food is very fresh. Chicken egg is not available there.
