Katra Masjid

Wonderful piece of architecture showing the glory of the past. A must visit for you if you are fond of history and architectural heritage.

Everyone has their favorite place but this is my favorite place. When I go here, I feel like I have come to paradise.

The Katra Masjid holy mosque for Muslims.

The Katra Masjid is a former caravanserai, mosque and the tomb of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan. It was built between 1723 and 1724. [1] It is one of the largest caravanserais in the Indian subcontinent. It was built during the 18th century, when the early modern Bengal Subah was a major hub of trade in Eurasia. The Katra Masjid is located in the north eastern side of the city of Murshidabad, in the Indian state of West Bengal. The most striking feature of the structure are the two large corner towers having loopholes for musketry.

The station is between Azimganj and Farakka.
There are very few trains in this line. NH32 Passes near this station. Raghunathganj is only 3-4 km away towards East of the station. Buses to Berhampore from Raghunathganj fultala Bus Stand via Sagardighi is available. Or via Lalgola, Bhagabangola, Jiaganj, Lalbagh Also Available.

Historically relevant. Do hire a guide for more intrigue info about this place. Keep 1 hour to enjoy the architectural marvel of the place. It is said that no rods etc used for the construction and many bricks used for the construction are parts of razed temples.

Nice historical place. This masjid made by Murshid Kuli Kha. Some very rare architectural structure you can see.

We walked from railway station to Jahan Kosa, then to Katra Masjid. It took 40 minutes. Toto services are very frequent and should not cost more than ₹20/- per ride.

The masjid offers great scope for photography & clicking profile photos. Photography with DLSR camera was somewhat prohibited (as I found staffs asking some wedding photographers not to use camera), but u can use it easily by avoiding the staffs who don't come often.

Tomb of Mushid Kuli Khan is situated under the stairs of entry.

This is one of the most known place in Murshidabad from the perspective of history.
Under the entrance stairs, Nawab Murshid Kuli Khan is buried.

The mosque is in almost dilapidated condition and needs immediate attention for renovation. Plaster of the walls exfoliated and the walls look shirtless orphan. Very sad to see this!

Good historical place but as per govt it is entry free but the guides charges 10 rupees per head forcibly

কাটরা মসজিদটি ঢাকার করতলব খান মসজিদ এর
(১৭০০-১৭০৪ খ্রি.) অনুকরণে নির্মিত বলা যায়। পূর্বদিকের সম্মুখভাগে রয়েছে বহুভাঁজযুক্ত খিলানের মধ্যেস্থিত পাঁচটি প্রবেশ খিলান। কেন্দ্রীয় প্রবেশপথটির উভয় পার্শ্বে রয়েছে সংলগ্নস্তম্ভ। অভ্যন্তরে প্রতিটি ‘বে’-তে পশ্চিম দেয়ালে রয়েছে তিনটি করে মিহরাব, অর্থাৎ সর্বমোট ১৫ টি মিহরাব রয়েছে মসজিদটির পশ্চিম দেয়ালে। অভ্যন্তরে হল ঘর দেয়াল থেকে উত্থিত চারটি আড়াআড়ি খিলানে মোট পাঁচ স্তম্ভপথে বিভক্ত। সমান্তরাল প্যারাপেট সুরক্ষা ব্যবস্থার বৈশিষ্ট্যযুক্ত এবং গম্বুজে রয়েছে উচুঁ ফিনিয়াল।

মসজিদটির নির্মাতা মুর্শিদকুলী খান সমাহিত রয়েছেন বহুখিলানযুক্ত মসজিদ প্রাঙ্গনে প্রবেশ তোরনের নিচে একটি সমাধিতে।
কাটরা কথার অর্থ জনবহুল বাজার ৷ আর কাটরা মসজিদের মানে জনবহুল বাজারের মধ্যে একটি মসজিদ ৷ ইতিহাস বলে, নবাব মু্র্শিদকুলি খাঁর ইচ্ছে ছিল একটি কাটরার মাঝে থাকবে একটি মসজিদ ৷ নবাবের ইচ্ছে মতো 1723-24 খ্রিশ্টাব্দে চুন-সুড়কি দ্বারা নির্মিত হয় কাটরা মসজিদ ৷ তার ঠিক এক বছর বাদেই 1725 খ্রিশ্টাব্দে মৃত্যু হয় মুর্শিদকুলি খাঁর ৷ মৃত্যুর পর তাঁকে মসজিদের পূর্বপ্রান্তের সিঁড়ির নিচে শায়িত করা হয় ৷ মসজিদে প্রবেশের জন্য পূর্বদিকে যে 14টি সিঁড়ি বেয়ে উঠতে হয় তার তলদেশের একটি ছোটো কুঠুরিতে মুর্শিদকুলির দেহ শায়িত রয়েছে । শোনা যায়, মুর্শিদকুলি নিজে চেয়েছিলেন, তাঁকে এমন জায়গায় শায়িত করা হোক যেখানে তিনি সাধারণের পাদস্পর্শ পেতে পারেন ৷ তিনি না কি পাদস্পর্শে পাপস্খলন করতে চেয়েছিলেন ৷ সেই মতো মৃত্যুর পর নবাবকে কাটরা মসজিদের সিঁড়ির নিচে কবর দেওয়া হয় ৷ 1846 সালে ভূমিকম্পের কারণে ভেঙে পড়ে দুটি মেহরাব (মিনার) ও মসজিদের গোম্বুজ ৷

It was a very beautiful place with a mosque and a temple beside each other. Ther lies the tomb of King Murshid Quli Khan who was the first independent nawab of Bengal. It was a huge place where 2000 Muslims can sit at one time to read namaz. It was previously a sabji Katra. In arbi language Katra means market. So the name of the place becomes Katra masjid. But the most odd thing is that there is mosque and temples of lord Shiva besides each other. And also king murshid Quli Khan has built his own tomb before his death in a way that if anyone has to enter the masjid he has to walk over his tomb. But I recommend everyone to take a guide with them to know many historical events and why Murshid Quli Khan became a Muslim from Hindu and many other things.

The place is well-maintained and also well connected by road and train. Ideal for visit in winter.

Katra Masjid stands tall, telling the World about the glorious days of Murshidabad when it was the most happening city in Indian Subcontinent in 18th century.

This is a historical place. The decorations and hide-and-seek architecture of the building is very innovative. But the tour guide are very annoying here.

This is the oldest and most important Islamic architecture at Murshidabad built by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, the first Nawab of Bengal. I just loved the iconic architecture of this place. There are no entry fees to visit this place. This mosque has a great historical importance. Hire a guide during your visit if you wish to know details about this place.

He is buried under the stairs strangely. His way of paying for the sins of his lifetime.

Its a beautiful historical place. You can feel the presence of history when you enter the site. Maintainance of the site not up to the mark.
