This 48 m-high tower has an Egyptian-style foundation while the structure itself has a classical fluted column and a Turkish dome with its upper part being designed in Syrian style. The tower is lit up at night and visitors are allowed to go up to the top where there are two balconies. A flight of 223 stairs leads up to the top. Shaheed Minar is located in the Esplanade in central Kolkata, towards the north east of the Maidan.

The commander had successfully defended Delhi against the Marathas in 1804 and had ensured the East India Companys win against the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War. Shaheed Minar, erected in 1828, was earlier known as Ochterlony Monument. The architect of the monument was JP Parker.

But now condition of place is very bad because people come eating gutkha and spitting there throwing garbage no cleanings people are very rude

শহিদ মিনার হল কলকাতায় অবস্থিত একটি স্মৃতিসৌধ। এই সৌধটির আগে নাম ছিল অক্টারলোনি মনুমেন্ট  (ইংরেজি: Ochterlony Monument) । ১৮২৮ খ্রিস্টাব্দে ব্রিটিশ ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানির কম্যান্ডার মেজর-জেনারেল স্যার ডেভিড অক্টারলোনির স্মৃতিতে এই সৌধটি নির্মিত হয়। ১৮০৪ খ্রিস্টাব্দে দিল্লিতে মারাঠাদের বিরুদ্ধে তাঁর সফল আত্মরক্ষা এবং ইঙ্গ-নেপাল যুদ্ধে গোর্খাদের বিরুদ্ধে তাঁর নেতৃত্বে কোম্পানির বাহিনীর বিজয়কে স্মরণীয় করে রাখতে এই সৌধটি নির্মিত হয়েছিল। সৌধটির নকশা প্রস্তুত করেছিলেন জে পি পার্কার। সরকারি কোষাগারের অর্থসাহায্যে এই সৌধটি নির্মিত হয়।সৌধটির নির্মাণকালীন ব্যয় ছিল ৩৫ হাজার টাকা।

১৯৬৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দে অগস্ট মাসে তদানীন্তন যুক্তফ্রন্ট সরকার এই স্মৃতিসৌধটিকে ভারতের স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনে নিহত শহিদদের উদ্দেশ্যে উৎসর্গ করে। সেই সময় এই সৌধের নতুন নামকরণ করা হয় "শহিদ মিনার"। বর্তমানে সরকার এই সৌধটিকে রাতে আলোকিত করার এবং দর্শকদের এর উপরিভাগে ওঠার অনুমতি দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে। এই সৌধের শীর্ষভাগে সর্বশেষ উঠেছেন পশ্চিমবঙ্গের প্রাক্তন রাজ্যপাল গোপালকৃষ্ণ গান্ধী ও তাঁর পরিবার।

Beautiful place. There's arrangement of sitting. No entry fee. Tourist spot. One thing I don't like about this place is, there's no shade. It'll tiring if you visit there in summer. A large field is there. There's no timing of opening of closing. This place is near a bus stop. It's few minutes away from Esplanade Metro Station. Moreover, transportation in this place is quite advanced.

In 1997, a tourist jumped off the lower balcony of the monument. [4] Since then, police permission is required to climb the steps of the monument. [4] Local residents must submit proof of address and a photo ID at the Lalbazar Police Headquarters, while out-of-town tourists must submit documents from their hotel, and foreigners must submit a copy of their passport. [4]

The monument offers a bird's-eye view of the city. [4] The government has planned to open the monument to the public, after the renovation work is completed. The renovation work was started in late 2011 and will be completed in two phases. The first phase was scheduled to be completed by June 15,2012, and is said to cost about ₹50 lakhs. [4] There are also plans to illuminate the monument, both from inside and outside, and to give the monument a fresh coat of paint. In the second phase a temporary folding stage will be set up at the foot of the 48-metre (157 ft) tall monument[4] to avoid congestion at the Dorina Crossing during rallies.

After the work is completed, both tourists and locals will have access to the top of the monument. Stalls selling souvenirs will also be set up just in front of the monument, while the pathways leading to it will be cleaned and decorated with flowering plants.

But the govt.needs to maintain this place better because there are lot of dirty things around the minar and tourists throw different kinds of food packets and other things in the field, which spoils the beauty of the place.

The present government has decided to illuminate the tower during evenings and allow visitors to the top. The last people to have been up there were former governor Gopal Krishna Gandhiand his family.

Standing tall with a height of 48 meters, Shaheed Minar provides a mesmeric panorama of the beautiful city of Kolkata. You need to climb more than 200 steps to reach to the two balconies at the top. An impressive blend of Egyptian, Syrian and Turkish style of designing has been used in the architecture. To the south of the Shaheed Minar, a vast field called Shaheed Minar Maidan occupies the space. This ground has been known for hosting a number of political rallies and morchas. The first political meeting at this ground was organized by Rabindranath Tagore.
