Puts Shyambazar & Gariahat to shame and more so if you take into account that there’s no electricity and the market is driven by the length of the day.

This is a place where so called upscale people can taste the culture and traditions of rural Bengal amidst the greenery. The place sits within a forest area and local artisans and performers assemble to show their best performances along, including boul songs and bohuruppes. There are good restaurants around and also small stalls selling traditional snacks and deserts. Though named Shonibarer Haaretz now a days almost all days (except Wednesday) there is some activity there. One can reach by morning train, enjoy it and come back by evening train to Kolkata /Burdwan

When we are bored with the humdrum of daily routine we must think of an escape. Shantiniketan, is not an misnomer claiming to be the abode of peace. The place not only reflects the nobility of Tagores but nurtures Gurudev's thoughts even after long years. This time it was our destination.
165km distance from Kolkata can easily be travelled by train or road. We planned a day trip to rejuvenate ourselves as much as possible. We took Kulik express from Howrah and reached Bolpur station within around 3 hours. This place of red soil is also known for baul fakirs. You'll see them on your itinerary. Tagore himself was inspired by them and undoubtedly the charm of this place made his creations timeless. Maharshi Devendranath found this place and later built a guest house, "Shantiniketan". Gradually the complete area came to be known as Shantiniketan. Totos are available from the station area but the fare is subjected to burgening. It was the time to meet serenity at it's place.
On reaching, first site we've visited was Ravindra bhavan Museum. This place houses some of the writings, documents, photographs and many other belongings of Tagore that attracts inquisitive mind to cultivate his excellence. The museum was inaugurated in 1962 though the building dates back to the time of Sri Devendranath Tagore. This place witnessed controversial Nobel theft. While exploring Shantiniketan, the site can be a good start for you.
A big part of Shantiniketan remained unknown to us as the main campus was closed. Gurudev initiated the concept of open air learning inspired by the ancient gurukul system. The old banyan tree whispers the golden memories in your ears. The seeds of perseverance was sown under the shade of this tree, later it came to be known as Visva Bharati University. Kala bhavan is the fine arts section of Visva Bharati, is also a must visit. The place is decorated by the works by artists like Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij.
We visited Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary, popularly known as deer park and it was quite good. Srijoni shilpgram is another place we visited, famous for the handicrafts of eastern and North eastern states. By this time we had to listen to our tummy. We had our lunch at bonobeethi heshel. The food was average as per my taste buds.
Completing lunch we got ready to visit the famous weekend market, Sonajhuri hat at a distance of few kilometres. Local villagers showcase their artefacts amidst the Sonajhuri trees. Tribal people were performing their dance and I did a little waist swing with them. The soothing ambience with the sweet melodi of flute maddened our mind. I bought a beautiful ektara to keep these moments alive. This market is also known as khowai haat for the geological formation of this place.
The sun was showing red signal and it was time to conclude our journey. As per our calculations still we had some time to greet this place with a rhythmic farewell. We were reciting the poem "amader choto nodi chole ake bake" on the shore of kopai river as if time we were traveling through the time.

Sonibaar haat good place for short weekend leave near shantiniketan, music and handloom and handicrafts market, weekly
This is iconic and famous haat or market in Bolpur. This haat is called 'sonibarer Haat'. It happens every day in the week but Saturday market something remarkable. Handicraft shopping, folk dance, baul songs and local food are combination of rich essence of rural bengal. You have to visit there afternoon to before evening. This haat is famous for local handicraft items like saree, Panjabi, kurti, bed cover, hand made junk jewellery, leather items, show pieces, wooden items, etc. All items are kind of premium segment, but you can bargain as mush as possible. Car parking is available but during heavy rush it is challenging.
Don't forget to visit the scenic beauties in and around the place.

A good place near Shantiniketan to visit for buying any local products sold by locals there, very huge market and variety of sarees, Punjabi (juba), bags, stoles, artificial ornaments, some food items and variety of artefacts made with local products.

Maddening crowd that can be managed better no light after sunset which forced to close the Haat.some of the products are very cheap but also duplicate rayon, needs thorough consideration.

But to end fantastic place to shop at a rate 1/4 from cities with a lot of varieties

Nice place and a lot to shop if you like the local products. Don't assume price will be less. Not too far from the station and don't forget to bargain with the Toto Drivers if you don't want to be fooled.

There is a market in open space beside canel. Cloths and handicrafts are very cheap. Some dancing troops are ready for the amusement of the tourist. You can participate in dancing with them. Some Bauls are here to sing the song. Very nice and friendly environment.

Though it used to occur in every Saturday & Sunday now it occurs everyday. 12 to evening is peak hours everyday. Sunday is overcrowded. Mainly ladies dress materials and artificial ornaments are available. Gents merely get materials for them.

It's a very attractive and old Haat (weekly market) for the tourists. The 'haat' named 'Sonajhuri haat' takes place on Saturday and Sunday in full form.
It is said that the great Rabindranath Tagore established the market for the scheduled Tribes (Adibashi) to sell their hand made items and articles.

Very attractive place where people can buy Bengal traditional products. Mainly textiles are famous here. However hand-made jewellery are very much available. The designs are unique. Many boutique owners from Kolkata get their stock from here. Also it is located at a place where RAbindranath Tagore established his own abode, which made the place more attractive. The haat is also available on Sunday. However on Saturday more artisans are present.
Lots of handcrafted product available here. All are so so beautiful and cheap in price. Products represent the local culture and respect to Kobiguru Robindranath Tegor.

The place has become very commercial. No longer has the rustic artisan feel. Turned into a commercial hub with no new offering, with hardly anything interesting.

One of the most popular tourist spot in Shantiniketan. The market or 'Haat' settled on every Saturday near sonajhuri forest. Various handicrafts items are available here. Visitors can also enjoy and participate in tribal music and dance. The red soil of this place makes the haat more colourfull. On other days of the week the haat is not settled in fullfledge.
