The Bakery

We took one cheesecake and one chocolate brownie on take out. Even though they looked great, the taste was below average. They forgot to give us spoon as well. I don't know why would they use such low quality chocolate in brownie, the jello usage for cheesecake was also weird. I had to throwbhalf of the cheesecake in trash, it was not rotten but just tasted too bad to eat.

On 26/9/2023 I went to the Bakery of Lalit Great Eastern Hotel. From there I purchased two cheese mushroom croissants to be parcelled. On returning home, to my horror, my mother discovered a strand of hair embedded within one of the croissant.
Is this really expected of such an esteemed hotel? Don't you ask your staff in the bakery to wear precautionary gear before even entering the bakery?

I had really good memories of the lalit great eastern bakery as I remember having an amazing red velvet cake. Not anymore. They have so many things wrong with this place.

We went in on a Friday late afternoon and the people at the cafe seemed displeased to have us there. There was one lady behind the counter and she could not care any less that anybody was there. We ordered a cappuccino and a chocolate cake. The cake was quite nice but the coffee tasted a bit bland. The decor of the place is interesting but it felt really cold and unwelcome. I will think twice before I go there again

With a very high hope and an urgent requirement I stepped into this legendary Historical Bakery to get a birthday cake for my Father and some other savouries only to get my hopes shattered and my needs reduced to a mere puny scattered words of no value to the stuff.
Unfortunately my purse was stolen on the way so I had no cards or cash with me at the moment, but off course I was loaded with all the modern EFT (electronic funds transfer apps and cash in my account and wallet). So was pretty confident of getting my requirement fulfilled.
But the stuff pay heed to my repeated request and denied any help in getting my Father's birthday wish fulfilled. They simply said they accept only cash ana cards and no other mode of payments period. This was something that was really really disheartening and unacceptable for such a Legendary and famous band of Hotels- The Lalit. The Great Eastern. I never in my dreams thought that they won't have this option of payment in this digitalized world where a mere footpath vendor is accepting online fund transfer now a days. Kuddos to the outrageous effort of the stuff in turning deaf ears to my only small request.

Thank you for making my day. Will never forget this.
The Lalit-The Great Eastern

A heritage bakery set in the heart of Kolkata. The bakery is adjacent to the larger hotel. Recommend that you visit the Bakery early morning for a sip of hot coffee and freshly baked chicken puffs.

It's now almost a yearly ritual to visit this place on a very special day in February to collect cakes, pastries, tarts etc for celebration at home. Every year it seems to deteriorate one notch. The fall is not so sudden by gentle one. Your mind voice will tell you that this time it has fallen one more notch but probably you will need some time to note what is wrong there but if you give it time you will be able to see. The iron beams from the ceiling is getting disjointed from their welded points in some place. One of the display is placed in such a way that it is making the surrounding a little dark. The attendants are warm and friendly but they lack experience. I found mostly interns there during my visit this time (cost cutting did you say?). The cake and the tart we took were, however, great. Next time might give this place a pass and try someplace else.

Wonderful ambience. Never too crowded on weekdays. But the taste loses out to lesser known or smaller bakery brands. In the past 1 month, I have tried their brownie, butterscotch pastry and red velvet cake. Too sweet, too hard or lowest layer too moist. Something wasn't right each time. Red velvet lacked the tangy flavour and was too sweet. Ditto with their cheesecake. I eat cheesecakes for the flavour and excess sugar ruins a good dessert. I had a similar complaint in 2019, but clearly the bakery recipes haven't changed in these 3 years. Honestly, for someone with fairly good baking skills, I feel The Lalit should do better! The ambience deserves 5 stars.

This bakery is located at the extension of The Lalit Great Eastern Hotel (earlier known as the Wilson's Hotel).

One would think that the cost attached to a 5 star hotel would touch the ceiling but in reality it is affordable without burning a hole in your pocket.

This place came highly recommended for its sliced brown bread which I can second is pretty decent. The interiors of exposed brick and iron gives the place an old school vibe which is further accentuated by the various relics (posters, old school oven, etc) on display. The place also boast an enclosed yet light filled beer garden, of sorts. The cakes and pasties that we tried were also pretty good. Had the opportunity to chat with Chef Neeraj who was super professional and informative.

One of the most unique bakeries I have even seen. It has a history that is talked about by everyone and for me, personally, it was great!

Good food, pricing is almost the same as the rest of the bakeries, the quality is great, not much variety. Highly recommended!

This year I brought two cakes from this counter. One fruits and one plam cake. But really disappointed about the cakes. Two cakes are made by maximum dye fruits and the plam cake taste not at per the price. My request to the authority please don't make the customer fool.

We had ordered a 2 - pound Black Forest cake for my daughter's birthday from Lalit Great Eastern, kolkata along with some other food items. We had paid for our order 3 days prior to the D- day.

However, it was a very disappointing experience for us. The food was supposed to be delivered at 5 pm but it was delivered 2 hours prior; which made the food cold by the time of consumption. Furthermore, when the cake box was opened, the entire cake was found smeared. The pieces had to be arranged so as to make her birthday message merely readable. To add to our frustration, the cream used in the cake was not even fresh or of poor quality. On top of it, more than half the cake was just chocolate shavings! We went for Black forest cake by the sheer recommendation of the staff and all we got was a cake so small with hand counted 3 - 4 cherries and a heap of chocolate shavings! I can ignore the clumsy decoration but the use of sub-standard ingredients is simply not acceptable.

We sent our feedback to hotel along with the photo of the cake we received. The F&B manager Mr. Sagar simply offered to give me another cake next day which was very offensive. Is it some kind of joke or mockery? It was a special day for us. We had read a ton of positive reviews online and had heard of the reputation Lalit Great Eastern holds in the market. Hence, we are writing this review so that people like us, who read reviews and base our decisions on them, don't feel cheated. Furthermore, we expect that Lalit Great Eastern truly lives up to the 'Great' in its name and provide if not great but atleast decent service to its clients.

The Bakery is oldest bakery in Kolkata & serves great food.
Pastries are great to have and varieties are mesmerizing.
Not only pastries, Fish & Chips and Burgers are great as well.
Bakery serves special fruit cakes & plum cakes during Christmas try that out if in Kolkata at that time.

Extremely cosy environment. Baking paradise in disguise. Wish they had more comforting chairs or couch though.

Do give it a visit if you are looking for a good cafe to chill. Please visit during the happy hours i.e from 5 pm to 8 on to avail 50% on selected items like alochol, patties and desserts.

The cakes and pastries are delicious. Ambience is wonderful. But the service is utterly slow. I mean, absurdly slow.

This is a great all-day restaurant located in the erstwhile Great Eastern Hotel, now being operated by the fascinating The Lalit Group of Hotels. In line with their counterparts across the country, this restaurant has freshly baked and cooked varieties of items with mouthwatering desserts. The decor and ambience here can only be described as top-notch.

Excellent pastries and good sandwiches, etc. Service could be a bit better. The toasted grilled vegetable sandwiches in focacia bread were superb - a full meal in itself. They were unfortunately out of coffee, but the masala tea was excellent

You will go inside the place with a body of 50 kgs and come out with a body of 60 kgs (theoretically).
Yupp you heard it right, the ambience and the pastries here will make you eat till eternity lasts (here eternity means your wallet).
Superb fluffy pastries.
